This is a very fine approach to demonstrating the science of photography. I tend to go to sleep during lectures. Marisa is a smart lady. And easy on the eyes.

I like this series. You can use the histogram on the camera just as well as the tether software. What suck for canon users at least is that they make the edges of the histogram so hard to see as it blends in with the rest of the display. On the old 30d the histogram was blue on a black background so it was a lot easier to see the edges and therefore the relationship of the black and white spike to the edges. Understanding what end of the histogram is up is critical to interpret the exposure and set the exposure correctly. It was cool to see Marisa ask that question.

I like the fact that you include Marisa, she's used to photoshoot but with a learner point of view. First time I see that on a training video and I found it very educational. Better then some questions ask on a chat during live show that are most of the time ether too basic or just funny comments. Here I see someone learning from a pro and I really enjoy that. Really appreciate that you gave Marisa do things hands on. It is often difficult when teaching someone to not show them first with a "Watch me." Having the student actually doing the steps helps them to actually learn it. And teaches the teacher patience. :D Marisa is awesome as usual. Attentive, quick to learn, and asks good questions when she has them. Nice teamwork. Also the first time I've ever been the first comment. That and $6 might get me a coffee at Starbucks if I don't get carried away with the extras.

I have never used histograms and I am amazed by the number of new digital only photographers use them all the time and seem to be lost without them. Love your teaching style! So easy to follow. And teaching Marisa also helps because she asks the questions most of us beginners need answers to. I shoot full length fashion photography on mannequins using continuous COB lights. Could you do a video on which light meter is best for that scenario? Most light meter tutorials deal with flash photography only. I need to know what light meter features I would need for continuous lights. Thanks!

I think this is an excellent series, and I just hope the people who need to see them, see them. As to where to go from here, it's a bit hard without knowing what's already in the can, but shutter speed in different situations and DoF seem obvious suggestions. If you want to open a difficult can of worms, at a later date you could devote 3 minutes to each of the effects of levels, contrast and clarity. You've already looked at the Exposure slider and WB. All the best.

I've had Capture One for 3 years for my own personal use (I am the professional photographer for our family reunions), and you showed me that cropping in on the gray card of the image shows the histogram ( sorry Marisa...herstogram) in a much better way. Love the mentoring videos. The two of you make a great team. How about a mentoring video on Exposure Triangle. Again, keep up the good work.

Good video. I photographed a snow covered service station scene and just spot-metered off the wooden door after trying other ideas. Histogram vs Hertogram? Lol! Reminds me of the years ago Seattle change of MANhole cover to PERSONhole cover. It was dropped when it caused lots of laughs. Some say that animal owners were involved and wanted BEINGhole covers.

It's definitely a fun series you guys got going, takes me back to my school days 😊 Now that you have mostly covered the exposure triangle, maybe you could teach her some more about the relationship between white balance and exposure regarding colour reproduction; Don't know if can make an entire episode about that, but you could add in a mixed lighting scenario - something like selecting the "right" WB, when the subjects back or right side is in 5500K and the subjects front or left side is in 3000K.

I think this format is great for many who may want to get into Photography coming from a Camera Phone. I have encounter people who are very into the Histogram while at the same time there are many who are not. Daniel Norton may I suggest to make a video making the very best use of the camera's Pop-up flash, I think with your knowledge and experience you will be able to show us how to use it best?

FWIW, depending on the lens and how close you focus on your subject, exposure will change. Best not to refocus if you move the camera real close to get the exposure.

Umm, no. Correct exposure is correct exposure. I suppose it’s possible to affect the exposure by getting close (blocking light, wearing dark or light clothing) but exposure itself does not change.

You Daniel are an excellent instructor and Marisa is an excellent student. HOWEVER all thru this vid no one mentioned nor asked about what the camera light meter was set at. I know keeping up with Marisa . . . is challenging... -bounce bounce ---;) and you usually tell us about your camera, but the settings are important. Also - since you always have been using a static subject / model... why a zoom lens why not a simple inexpensive 50mm...? Most folks you are makin these for,...dont have or can afford expensive gear , . . . so why not use easy to get gear,,...after all your controlling all the light and the ISO, aper and shutter are generic set ... great vids....thanx!

Is it a muscle memory that one learns over time? Sure, in the olden days I just might have a not-so-good photo, but what got you and I and so many others to see not to do that not-so-good photo too much ever again? Is the histogram a crutch... or, is it a tool that one will eventually dispense of? And this comment knows of the effects of one's style and styling that can be imposed in the capture or in post. Really, this series could go on for a very long time. Be that as that is, the explanations were good for the questions (and for purposefully staying clear of too much too soon) 👍

What if I’m using my strobe and my histogram never seems to be indicating a correct exposure? It’s always shadow heavy to the left. I’m metered correctly. But, when I load the raw into LR the exposure is fine 🧐 Am I missing something?? Thanks in advance!

If the histogram in LR looks good, but not the one on the camera that seems odd - they should match. Keep in mind the histogram is looking at the entire scene me so if the scene is dark/light you will have extreme looking Histograms even if the subject looks correct
