What kind of pre-flight preparations do pilots have to do before they go flying?
Who does what and how do they determine how much fuel that they need to uplift into the aircraft?
This and many more things will be covered in this video. You will get to follow me and my collegue Luca when we go through the Weather, NOTAM's, Flightplans and much more. Make sure you watch the whole video to the end, you might have to do this yourselves some day!
Please feel free to ask questions about this episode in the comments of the video and get the Mentour Aviation app in order to discuss directly with me or other pilots and aviation enthusiasts.
You can also buy instructional videos in the applications about various topics like "Engine failure", "TCAS maneuvres", "Cat 3 approaches" and also a complete "Setup of a Boeing 737-800" from Dark and cold to ready for taxi.

This is such a tough subject to talk about. #1 It's highly technical. #2 It's a dangerous game because you risk disclosing proprietary or security information. #3 There is a ton of material to cover because there is a lot of material that pilots have to sort through. Thank you for cutting through it and letting us see.

Haha I love how at the start the camera started rolling just before you began walking, so there's a moment when you haven't begun walking yet, and then you begin walking to take the intro shot. It's these little quirks/"mistakes" which make me realise that making videos like these takes a lot of deliberate work - they show just how much thought you put into the little details, how much effort you put into making this podcast as entertaining and polished as they are informative. I've been binge-watching your videos for a week now and I don't see myself stopping till I get through every single one of them. Thank you for all your amazing work :)

Videos like these ones have really helped me get over my fear of flying. I suppose when anything bad happens with a plane you only ever see the disasters either in films or in real life on the news. So you never get a clear picture in your head of just how safe flying is or the amount of work that actually goes into flying a plane from the engineers, to the pilots, air stewards, safety checks etc. I recently flew on a plane where someonething occurred with an airlock after the plane already landed safely. This fault occurred while loading passenger luggage onto the aircraft. We all boarded the plane but after about an hour of no joy trying to fix the fault we had to disembark and get back on another plane. Then we got ready to go to the runway and an aggressive passenger kicked off so it was back to parking the plane to have him arrested and taken off. 7 hour delay in total but it was so reassuring to see no matter how long anything takes, if something isn't right then it's a case of hurry up and wait. It was my husband and kids first time flying whereas I've flown for 28 years. I had to tell them these were highly unusual circumstances also the weather caused more delays stopping and starting take offs and landings and we were about no.30 in the queue for take off. Flight was fine and flight home was very quick and smooth. Love flying now :)

As a comparison, I work for a small Charter company on Piston and Turbine aircraft. For us, our call time is 1-1.5 hours before flight. First officer does the walk around then takes the aircraft out to the run up area to warm up the engines and test the systems. Captain does the flight planning during this time. By the time I am done the run up I usually have a text message from the Captain with how much fuel we need and I fill up the plane. Then I add or remove any seats required for the trip, and the captain is usually greeting passengers and preparing the commissary/ bringing out the baggage and cargo to be loaded. Now we load the passengers and everything is ready for an immediate departure.

Great video, when I worked for AA in DCA, they had separate crew rooms and the main room had tons of computers set up for the pilots. I always miss the smell of Jet A in the morning. Very informative video, especially for someone who has never seen what you do before you get to the plane, most people think it's like a rental car, next flight crew jumps in and your off

this is so comforting! i dont know about the rest of the people who watch your videos, but i was under the impression that you usually knew nothing about the weather when you were on an aircraft, i thought it was a bit of a surprise how the day would go and that's why turbulence scares me a lot, cause it feels like the crew didnt know about it or werent ready for it. but now i see you have everything in order and as much control as it can be!

I am sure that there will be a plan for accommodating for rerouting the flight under unknown circumstances. These issues are also discussed with flight crew. Just keep them informed. Same as the case for the emergency procedures which are pretty much standard in nature. Example dumping off the fuel, dumping off the extra luggage etc., Although I am not a pilot it is interesting to know these details. Highly educated videos for beginners like me.

You got flight dispatchers which basically have pilot like knowledge about load planning, weather, and fuel planning, etc. but without the flight training. They're the ones that writes up the flightplans which they "release" to the pilots in question :)

NOSIG means no significant change in the next 2 hours, it's a trend forecast. NSW no significant weather. So basically Ryanair doesn't schedule enough time for a preflight, and you work 15 minutes for free reducing your rest, maybe even going into minimum rest. Good to know.

If you have around €18 (excl. VAT) to spare, get TOPCAT (take off performance calculation tool). It has many cool features. You can do your weight and balance calculations there. And after that, you select the airport, runway, weather conditions and estimated TOW (there's option to select the flap configuration, anti-ice, no bleed t/o, and engine thrust setting). The program will then calculate the V-speeds and even the de-rate (fixed derate, assumed temperature or a combination of both.) You'll get a nice table of V-speeds and runway lenght remaining for given flaps and various engine thrust settings. Did I mention it can calculate the landing distance required, too? It's great for determining the autobrake setting. It's one of the most useful programs for flight-simming. Really worth the money. Give it a look. Btw, do you fly the PMDG 737NGX? If so, the FMC gives you the V-speeds on the TAKE OFF page.
@prryplatypus

Zweistein Wow, sounds amazing! I think I'll give it a look. And no, I fly X-Plane. Some aircraft also give you the V-Speeds, but I'm not sure if that happens in real life, and I want to be as close to reality as possible. Thank you so much for the TOPCAT suggestion!

I know the factors such as weight, flight distance etc. are required for it, but how does the math look like? Other than that, thank you for giving us an insight into this profession. I'm considering getting a privat pilot license in the future. Great job captain :)

Thank you for supporting! The reports and forecasts are quite accurate but we update them electronically before each flight.

Hi, Mentour! Could you do a video about the pilot or first officer walking around and examining the outside of the plane pre-flight: what all you check for and whether there have ever been things you’ve seen which caused you to reject the plane, send it back to maintenance, and request a replacement plane? I know in the winter you check for ice on the plane and you need to have it de-iced; and I’m guessing you’d check for oil or gas leaks, tire pressure, and broken fan blades? Anything else you’d check for that maintenance might have overlooked? Thanks!

You are exactly correct. Hydraulic leaks brakes& tires. Pitot tube covers removed. Then in the cockpit move the rudder & ailerons for flight controls.

6:11 Great video, but you made a classic mistake there captain. NOSIG means "No Significant Change", which means that there have been no significant changes since the last METAR report It is NSW that means "No Significant Weather".

+Mentour Pilot Hello Petter. You just made one of the best, most interesting videos since you started Captain. It just turned into my favourite video and I really appreciated the huge effort you made filming it for us, and just before a flight, CRAZY . I feel really lucky to be part of the community you created and since I follow you from the very FIRST VIDEO you made, I can really say how much improvement you've been doing to the channel in these two years . Thank you so much Petter! As always keep on the GREAT GREAT job, hope to meet you soon in the skies (just give me some time to start my way towards flightschhol! ; ) ). THX Davide

Hey! Could you do a video when you first arrive into the cockpit to show us when you're preparing the aircraft? When you switch on all the instruments etc. Thanks :)

Perhaps a video on flight plans? Probably something I'm going to learn in flight school, but still probably helpful to some people.

Hi there. This is the first video of yours that I have watched, I'm quite interested in what happens before flights and how you prepare etc., so I have definitely subscribed for more! Also, I am from Glasgow, so it was interesting to see that you may have had to fly in an airport I always use😉 Usually, when flying into Scotland, you can expect some rain 😂 Love the video

Interesting aside: There is a JustPlanes blu-ray video on an Air Canada flight that shows the preflight planning for a long Toronto to Hong Kong flight. The flight paths can go over Russia or over the western Pacific. The fuel consumption varies, of course, with winds and distance flown. The flight path over Russia is shortest, but Russia charges a lot of money for ATC for overflights, so sometimes it is less expensive to fly around Russia. In this case, flight operations plots two or three routes, and, with the pilots, chooses the optimum one for flight time and cost.
