....what's going on in The States with pilot training is OBSCENE (I'm an American, so I know)......I can get Grad-school 4 year student loans to study any grad school subject, including a monthly stipend for living expenses - but for flight school??? - NOOOO!! - for flight school its cash-and-carry only. THAT is obscene. ......so glad I decided to tell all of them to go #### :)

There definitely is a shortage among major airlines here is the US as well. As regionals is a stepping stone to major airlines here in the US, I was talking to a Delta Senior captain a week or so ago and he illustrated that even they are suffering. Meanwhile the regional pilot shortage is so bad that Expressjet cut their fleet bascially in half.

This would explain why I have been listening to American pilots on ATC Communications that fly the huge jets for Asiana, Cathay, etc., here in Los Angeles. My guess is they are beginning to leave to the Asian market now. BTW, amazing videos Mentour! Keep them going.

Luckily it's been getting better here in the States. Regional F/Os are at like 30-40k now for their first year. It shoots up to ~60k in like 2 years as a captain. Still nothing like it is at Majors or Legacy but at least you're not on food stamps driving a '92 Corolla or something. Not an airline pilot yet, still a student.

The thing about the Colgan crash is that each pilot had more than 1,500 hours anyway. On top of that, i have seen studies concluding that 750 hours is the sweet spot where pilots are the most competent and haven't developed bad habits. 1,500 hours is arbitrary and dreamt up by people who had no knowledge of aviation. Any attempts to change it and you will get protestors saying, "THE BLOOD WILL BE ON YOUR HANDS". Nobody wants to be responsible for future crashes, so congress won't budge on it. The facts of that incident were that the captain had spent the night in a lounge on a couch, and the first officer was making $16,000 a year, had to fly to commute to work because they couldn't afford to live near work. Both pilots were burnt out. It's so obvious why they crashed but we have let fear override our judgement. This has me very concerned about my future, where low-time jobs are diminishing. No need for crop dusters when you have drones. Banner towing is dangerous. Seen a crash myself. Not to mention hard as any other job to get into. You will NOT find a single non-CFI job here with less than 500-750 hours, even those are scarce. Almost all jobs start at 1000 hours, even for piloting something that weighs less than 6,000 lbs. I'm certainly considering going overseas for a job, but also do not want to steal jobs from locals. It also seems pretty consistent that any employers want pilots to be permanent residents or born citizens.

Bang on the buck RumikoOne, it probably had nothing to do with their flight hours or training, but more with the conditions they had to work in, including the commuting and sleeping in crash-pads making sh*t money. Working their way up to the amount of hours that a big airline would be interested in so they would be able to jump ship into the "big league".
@parimal7528

RumikoOne, then kindly come to India. Indian airlines are being forced to defer aircraft deliveries as there aren't enough pilots. There are over 1100 aircrafts on order, most being A320s followed by B737s. And once the pilot is able to fly wide body, many Indian pilots shift from Indian airlines to the likes of Emirates, Etihad, Qatar & Singapore airlines. Right now ATR pilot commands max salary in India !! This is because lack of pilots & several airports in hilly areas can operate only ATRs, Q400s with shorter runways. In Asia (except Japan), the training costs for pilots are very high compared to average incomes especially in countries like India, China. Hence, more foreign pilots are hired due to unavailability of local pilots which leads to shortage elsewhere. If entry barriers are reduced, not only more people will become pilots but salary pay can also be reduced which also means lower ticket prices &/or more profitability for airlines which in turn will further expand the aviation market. The Indian aviation market is growing at 26% YoY & will become world's 3rd largest by 2020 & hence the demand for pilots is only going to increase further. The private jet market is another area which will also require new pilots.

Colgan refused to operate the Dash the same way they do in Canada, and the crew delayed boot deployment as a result. The FO made $19,000. Aviation deserves a pilot shortage.

I am glad things are starting to change in America but the situation is still tough. It’s nice that regionals are starting to offer compensatory incentives and fast track programs from certain flight academies but man the cost is still high and somewhat risky. However, where there is a will there is a way.

While the proximate cause of the Colgan crash was pilot error, the REASON was that Colgan refused to train to handle ice the same way that Canada does in the same aircraft. Late boot deployment led to an unrecoverable icing condition. A whole lot of people knew that the operator was working on the cheap (FO pay: $19,000) and that never leads to safety of operations.

Towards the end of the video when he mentioned about Airlines paying for training - reminds me that we had a similar situation a few decades ago with the trucking industry here in the U.S. Due to Government regulations and greedy companies trying to max their profit by screwing the drivers...it got to the point where it wasn't worth the investment in training so the shortage of drivers got so bad. There were ads in the paper all the time where major trucking companies would pay for your training if you agreed to work for their company for a certain number of years. Now the Airline industry is heading in the same direction. The U.S. is great at NOT LEARNING from past mistakes. Also, if the greedy Air Carriers keep treating their customers like shit, cramming more and more seats in the same amount of space, and continue to nickel & dime them with fees for everything....hopefully a day will come when the public will have had a enough and Pilot shortage will be moot because there will be a customer shortage and they did it to themselves.

I became interested in becoming a pilot only recently - it's kind of an awaken or re-heated dream if you like from childhood and also a potential way of change of career. Anyway I'm trying to explore possibilities and I'm a little wary that this kind of shortage hype is a bit of a bubble for training schools?I hope it's not the case. Although I agree with You to submit oneself through the aptitude tests before thinking of diving deep into the training. Is the test available at RAF Cranwell very different from the psychometric tests widely available online? Or can they relate to themselves in any way? Thanks for your informative videos. Take care & fly high :)

Mentour...I think your videos are really good! Informative..and easy to listen too. Keep it up! One question.... You speak of an aviation explosion in the Middle and far East.... I have an FAA ATPL 4000 hrsTT, 1000 ME but only 250 hrs turbine (20ton). I also have a self funded A320 T/R ! I look at all the M.East and Far East jobs online..with all the aviation brokers/consultants and virtually to a man..they ALL require 500 hrs ON TYPE or 1000 Hrs medium or heavy jets if you dont have the specific T/R. So pray...HOW does one get that time on type without a job on that type? I would have thought that with the supposed pilot shortage, they would snap me up in an instant...but I cant even apply as I dont have the minimum they ask for! And the brokers just shrug their shoulders...! So CAN they be so hard up for crew?? Ps...I'm not a US citizen...so cant get employed there. .

Great job on the video mentor pilot just to clarify that wasn’t the FAA that pushed the 1500 hour rule it was actually the family victims of the Cogan airflight they’re the one that pushed US Congress which in turn push the FAA to push out that our 1500 hour rule in the best of my knowledge most airlines are not requiring degrees but they still recommend pilots to have them just to look at a paper. great job on the video mentor pilot can’t wait for your next videos keep up the good work and thank you for being a inspiration for all us pilots out there

Hi Mentour Pilot, thankyou as always for your insightful videos. You mentioned towards the end about psychometric testing. I have recently been accepted into a well respected flight school in the Asia-Pacific region and a part of that was sitting a test known as the ADAPT screening test, which only asked 10-20 multiple choice questions to give a personality profile, as well as an aptitude test for learning and cognitive ability. Having been accepted to this respected flight school already, is that enough to feel confident that I could pass interviews for airlines when I come to them? (assuming I get good marks throughout my training, and have the relevant experience) Thanks!
@Darkmanmr47
@Darkmanmr47 7 жыл бұрын
I think that if it's a well respected school that has trained a lot of successful (which means in this case pilot's that are working and are paid to fly by airlines) pilots, is a good measure for the quality of training and the preparation of students when everything goes well economically. When things don't go well economically, no matter how good your training is, you'll sit at home hoping and praying for things to get better. As for your question related to the "intake" tests of flight schools, it all depends. If they are a school that accepts you into a sponsored cadet-ship, they will test you more vigorously, as they want only the best of the best, but then you are competing against a lot of people. Getting in though, means you've got what it takes and then some. Since the deregulation of training in many ( also European) countries it means that basically anyone that can afford it can start training. Not everyone who passes all the training will however manage to pass the requirements of some airlines, or are not the kind of people (character wise) that airlines are looking for as pilots. The big-shiny-jet-syndrome has always been around and a lot of people will go through with training as long as they can afford it, or can lend the money, even though they may not be a good fit later on during the selection process. Keep in mind also that as long as REAL shortages exist, airlines tend to be less selective while hiring and as long as you get in in one place and then have x thousand flight hours and you go to the second airline they wont care as much as you've proven yourself already. So good marks and while training and relevant experience means exactly 0 in a bad economy, though as long as someone is hiring, you'll have more chances of getting in than someone with lower marks. Schools that still require aptitude testing even though the training is self sponsored are to be preferred over schools that do not require any testing even though you'll be paying for everything yourself as it gives the school and yourself some kind of guarantee that you'll be able to pass in a meaningfull time and will also be the kind of person that would probably get through selection processes at airlines.

Just thought I would add my $.02, although you did an excellent job explaining. South America and Europe have the lowest increases in demand out of all the populated continents. I would say what happened with the unions in the 80s has little to do with the current pilot shortage. The 1500 rule, mandatory retirement being raised from 60-65 last decade, and having the recession and 9/11 last decade is definitely a US problem. But there is a high demand around the world either way, air travel is expanding. In the US things have been changing rapidly. Regionals are paying for the training of military helicopter pilots, especially Army helicopter pilots. Envoy and Transtates have started those. Also the cadet programs like you mentioned are getting there. JetBlue started a pipeline, although they are not laying for training.

I've been looking into a fulltime vocational flight school (USA) and all they talk about is the regional airline pilot shortage. They have a program that seems to cost about the same as most other flight schools in the area, maybe lower when all said and done, as well as a guaranteed CFI job to get to 1500 hours and also gets you signed up with a partnered regional airline that reimburses about 15% or so of your training cost even before they start paying you to fly for them. I sound like a commercial, but I bring that up because I have a concern. is this a huge marketing ploy that ultimately makes it seem like you're getting an awesome deal when really you aren't, or is an actual example of a real pilot shortage where regionals are doing this because they have to?

I absolutely love the program I am in. Get through these ratings and school, get a CFI rating to build hours AND GET PAID WHILE YOU BUILD HOURS! Then take to the skies via Military and or commercial aviaiton. Everyone should have a shot at it if they truly are passionate about it.

It's more of unequal distribution of pilots. Pilot training costs is higher than even Western countries for Indians & Chinese because local pilot training is not available for proper jetliners like A320s, B737s & wide-body ones. The airlines or schools here simply have tie-ups with other pilot schools especially based in Australia & New Zealand.

One thing you didn't mention is the back bone of aviation. General aviation is coming to an end, 40 years old Cessna trainers are disappearing left and right, we can no longer find parts or keep them airworthy. With ADS-B mandate compounding the burden on flight schools. Pilot training has increased 40% in the last 4 years. And ATC is being privatize, how bad can it be?

It's bad how discouraged American workers are (I'm American to be clear). The upper level greed and poor pay, no pensions, Union busting is so bad that finding quality workers is impossible. As an American flyer, I feel way more comfortable with highly experienced pilots. I do believe that low paid, newer workers in any job... Including pilots... Will do less quality work. Period. And with flying that means dieing. They shouldn't lower the entry level, necessarily, they need to pay them more!!!!! But in American greed wins. Poverty is the norm. British airways is my favorite airline.

You want to know why? Nobody here in the US has an additional $40,000 for flight fees on top on the $25,000 a year tuition to become one. Then once you get out the starting pay for pilots here is something like $20,000/year. Might as well keep that McDonald’s job. I’ve seen new pilots inside the welfare office. They cut their starting pats from $80,000 to $20,000 during the recession and when most airlines went bust and merged. Matter of fact, everyone inside the welfare office were completely stunned to see a pilot in the welfare office until I had to explain the situation.

It started back in the late 70’s in the united states when Mr. Jimmy Carter deregulated the airline industry, after time the small mom and pop shops where finical crushed and put out of business. When was the last time you saw the general public go to the mom and pop shops for a flight? In the United States there is a 80% default rate in pilot training meaning you receive no ratings, and left with a very large student loan debt.

***** Hi. I converted my FAA CPL ME/IR into an EASA license. It is pretty simple. Do the ATPL exams, and find a school that has a conversion course. There is one in Sweden Kalmar which I can recommend. It was 10 hours DA-42 SIM and 10 hours in the aircraft. After that one CPL check ride and one ME/IR check ride. I tried to do it in my home country but it is rare to convert here so nobody knew what I needed to do. The course in Kalmar is approved by the authorities.

There are flight schools in the US that prepare you for the written exam for the conversion and no extra flying is needed. But for the IR it does have to be done in Europe as well as the medical exam.

I was winged in 1986 by the Army at Fort Rucker, big airlines were not interested in hiring Rotary Wing Pilots. My fellow Army Aviators with heavy RW time in the reserves with me, could only be hired by the Crap Box Regional Airlines. Some guys made only $12,500 per year, & guys at Mesa said was a good weight loss program. Regional's seemed to very competitive with the Army at abusing their Pilots. I witness to a lot of regional horror stories, my regular Army Troop CDR & XO had to take a day off to chill after hearing on how one of their buddies was treated at a bankrupt regional. The Army paid better than a regional but with a whole different kind of suck. But most of your Army Aviation career is deployed in a tent with broke dick aircraft, Crappy base housing, stupid non-flying additional duties, Crappy assignments supposedly to help your career, Commanders trying to kill you, Major Command decisions by Non-Pilot Generals . Aviation Warrant Officers will always be assigned at Company/Troop level and Commissioned Officer pilots will barely fly and serve in miserable staff job's hoping for a command. I went back college and got degree, and went corporate & hated it, got married to beautiful women and we own a business, retired from USAR and never got called up for the Gulf wars. I remember after 9/11 when major airline pilots took major pay cuts and had very unhappy wives who disliked lifestyle changes. I was in MAG-41 at NAS Dallas TX, before the transferring to the Army for flight school when Braniff folded, My old USMCR Squadron CDR was out job as SR. Capt at Braniff. He was lucky at his age to be hired by Piedmont starting at the bottom. My advice for flight training get the military to pay for it & do not take student loans.

all of this is fine, but Little me, sitting in Canada is wondering what about Canada, small in population as we are distances here are long so often flight is a necessity. and interesting enough, Montreal now has direct flights from Bejing. BTW a flight from Montreal to Vancouver is about 6 to 61/2 hours, with a 30 minute difference due to the jet stream. Unlike Europe, distances, harsh winter and low population density make for limited value of high speed rail, except between Montreal and Toronto (a distance of about 500 km. between the two largest cities.) Also what about airlines using Canada to Asia over the arctic? Granted the arctic presents a number of radio and navigational challenges that do not exist further south, but with modern technology?? Also I am aware that some of our Inuit population have some interest in aviation and its industry because of its importance to them. they also have some degree of natural adaption to o=dd time zones because of the 6 month Arctic winter/summer. this I have met in person with Inuoits who were in Montreal one year because of the airport and regular flights.

Dear Captain, could you please advise why is it as per regulations we need 250 hours to get our CPLs however no Airline will look at us with such low flying hours ? is there anyway besides being a Flight Instructor where we can be hired with only three licenses and 250 hours ? I mean we need to get 1500 to be hired and we need to be hired to obtain 1500, it is confusing hehe

I know in the USA it DEFINATELY exists. Delta cuts flights from my home airport, and they attributed it to pilot shortage.

Yep! Great video by the way. Some of the airlines (regional airlines) in America are now offering starting salaries at 44K per year with full benefits. Much better than that 18K! This is simply because the shortage. If they can't attract pilots they will have to shut down.

In the aviation industry some airlines require a degree witch is a waist of federal tax payers dollars and has nothing to do with aviation itself. When the airlines get rid of their frequent flyer miles program and the airlines don't require a college then there is no pilot shortage.

It's a "pilot pay" shortage, not a pilot shortage. There is always someone out there who is willing to fly for less than you and the airlines take advantage of this. My solution is to go Corporate or leave the U.S.

There is no pilot shortage and there never will be. In US for one airline job, there are 3 ATPs ready to fill in. A job fair seat booking at $119 listed on internet was filled up in 60 seconds for 300 hungry pilots looking for jobs. Also this regional pay equal to burger flippers is BS. Pilots fly 20 hours a week plus give another 5 hours for pre and post flight. So for 25 hours you are getting paid for 40 hour rate, not in fast food category for sure. Same for big jet pilots, average $110K in US for flying 20 hours a week. Most of the time plane is on the auto so pilots are sitting around mostly except for take off and landing. Technology and robotics is always advancing and soon one person in cockpit might disappear for good. If might be a captain robot and a first officer just for a human presence. There are more chances to make money being a plane mechanic or airport operations than "hope to be an airline pilot" someday. This after spending atleast 50K in training and 6-10 years looking around. Btw, I am not a pilot or want to be one.
