The money line is telling people to bring money, which has some connotations that I think haven't been thought through but it is unique and different from referencing money you've already made.

My biggest problem with this debut is that the company has the resources to create something unique but they're setting for the bare minimum because the fans will eat it up regardless. I don't like being overly negative, but I don't think they'll get more interesting songs or visuals if stans expressing their disappointment just get label as haters.

The only reason this group even got noticed is because they are from YG. Without YG nobody would have cared. Everything about the group screams nugu. Even their styling looks cheap just compare them to Blackpink and Baby Monster. Meovv looks like a typical nugu girlgroup.

Tbh i gave up on yg and the black label their level of incompetence is genuinely astonishing somi just said that the black label takes about a year to make one song!!! it’s not because the quality is amazing because we all heard ice cream. I’m genuinely mad because this group has a lot of potential. Music video was too muted, and there were parts that didn’t make sense with the entire concept( the big foot reference). I listen to the whole song multiple times hoping I will grow to like it but no it’s very unimpressive. I hope girls will find success and for teddy to start having new ideas.

Im also suprised by how,, bland (?) their overall vibe is? Like say what you want about hybe groups but their debuts both sonically and stylistically stand out from each other quite well (even new jeans and illit tbh) and i was kinda interested in seeing how meovv will do, especially after seeing the pretty cool looking cat paw cover art thing. And then the song just feels so empty (not just literally) even like topic vise? Bringing ive's baddie here- not even a big fan of that style of music, but again the theme of cats stood out so well in that release I understand not every group is gonna go a maximalist over the top direction, but sleek minimalist style also works when done well, look at lesseraphim's early releases.

I was expecting like Cute but Baddie vibes, like Nicki Minaj in her Pink Friday era because their name is associated with cats. Also unpopular opinion, minimalism in kpop makes me YAWN nowadays. The thing is, Teddy needs experienced and seasoned idols-songwriters/composer/producers to fill the gap while making the songs. While I'm not a fan of all Big Bang's music, Teddy, G dragon, TOP and Taeyang made some genuinely good music that had good lyrics and honesty, which still lasts 15+ years later.

The thing with Meow is, they had haters, since their name was announced people were comparing a unreleased group to BM and BP, hating on the girls for being the first "Teddy produced group". I thought their message was going to be something like that, and I got disappointed, yes they were backing off the haters they had, but with a generic song, i thought they would be unique, different and prove their hates wrong, they just didn't, this is another generic song and because of that their message of making their own name failed, they're just like (if not a bit worse) than what they were being compared to. It's just sad, its a great song, i liked it, but definitely could have been better

I think the most intresting part of this whole situation is that Teddy didn't even produce the song. Other then writing some of the lyrics, he was noticeable absent from MEOVV's debut. So that brings up a new delema, as he is most likely focused on creating the music for Izna's debut, will we end up with three groups all debuting around the same time with the same problem? MEOVV had the advantage of not having Teddy directly produce the song and it still feel into the same pit falls of most of his work. So that just leaves Izna for Teddy to show he can grow and change.

Tbh after the collective sensation of being fed up with the Teddy formula with Blackpink's title tracks, i genuinely thought BabyMonster would end up flopping past the debut hype of Batter Up yet they proved me wrong so atp I don't even know if the Teddy/YG formula will ever fail. In terms of artistic credibility and/or quality reputation, it's clearly a hit or miss (see Sheesh or Pink Venom, pretty divisive imo) but it hasn't commercially failed despite most of us thinking so. But BabyMonster was the official follow up of Blackpink with a show that got a fandom before the debut itself, while Meovv is kinda outta nowhere so maybe they won't have the same luck idk

Self-admittedly, I'm not a large Teddy fan because of his repetitiveness and other points mentioned in this video. It's possible to have a distinguishable sound, yet be innovative. YG and Teddy's formula feels outdated and predictable, especially after overusing it with BP. People don't want a BP duplicate; they want catchy music and fresh faces. Fifth-gen groups are expected to bring the full package-talent, visuals, and the "IT" factor. However, expectations are so high now that it's nearly impossible for new rookies to achieve the same momentum. YG is experimenting with BM, using outside producers, but Teddy's sound remains unchanged. BP thrived due to low competition and their synergy with YG and Teddy, but that success is hard to replicate now in a saturated market. In short, no one will reach BP's level without all those factors combined, plus great music.

Honestly.... More underwhelming than Batter Up tbh. The name sounded cool, the reference of black cats in a teaser or whatever looked cool. Then I saw a preview of the girls, gorgeous but in the most basic scenery ever with generic black outfits.... That's when my excitement died down a bit.... Minimalism in kpop is so predictable and honestly kinda boring these days (imo) so I was expecting something more with a quirky group name like that. Idk, I feel like maximalism with kpop groups could be seen as "a breath of fresh air" because of how it's not playing it safe and it can be more fun than minimalism, you can get experimental with it. Just my take on what could help concepts, visuals and music in kpop level up a bit more. Still, I'll support them because I think they have potential and their vocals are very much needed in the kpop industry, which, let's be honest, mediocrity is getting overhyped these days. I like the Yetis/Chewbacca creatures and the vocals tho! Yeah the overall vibe of this group doesn't feel... New or unique to me (minus the Yeti/Chewbacca creature things). Maybe I'll eat my words after they release another song.

In terms of gg he's produced for 2ne1, Blackpink, and now Izna. 2ne1 hasn't been active in years (new comeback soon tho yay), BP's last songs were 2022, and Izna isn't even out yet. If Izna debuts and their song is as bad as this then i'll eat my words but personally I don't think it'll be anywhere near this poor quality. The reason people liked new jeans debut was because it was fresh, fun and overall good vibes. They were a bunch of girls having a good time being teens. That is endearing to watch and root for. I am still looking forward to Meovv but I don’t understand why YG/blacklabel give BM and Meovv such braggy lyrics. I understand they are hoping to create a Blackpink 2.0 but not even Blackpink did that in their debut era. Their debut era was also fresh and fun. The problem with MEOVV's debut is that TBL really has no ideas other than "just make another BP but also follow current trends", but they know that it's extremely difficult so they just kind of gave up. They tried to introduce some kind of lore in the teasers but gave up halfway so it's incomprehensible, and none of it is in the MV. The half hearted 5 seconds of Bigfoot dancing they threw in just in case they want to keep making weird lore later (but they're not sure)... Musically they're just trying to "recapture the magic of BP" without factoring in anything that could show the members' individuality. It feels like once they came up with the name, they were like "Okay that's catchy and creative enough, our work here is done". And as many others have said, this focus on bragging about riches and dissing the haters just looks so awkward, I'm not sure if even the members of BP would've been able to pull it of if this was their debut song. I agree about the international promotion potential of empty choruses but looking back on BP's debut, those choruses really don't feel that empty because there's so much going on musically aside from chanting. To me that was what set BP's songs apart from other attempts at something similar. ALSO, it's really funny because on top of everything Teddy didn't even write any part of the song, only the lyrics. Everyone was looking forward to a Teddy song for a Teddy group but he was like nah lol.

It’s just hard to believe these girls with the badass concept they forced them into. A shame really. I think they have a creative team problem. Like did they put up a moodboard in 2016 and leave it there? It’s just hard for me to imagine a room full of professionals spending time and money creating the same thing over and over. I think my biggest problem with YG/the black label at the minute is that their groups aren’t sonically diverse at all, blackpink, babymonster and now meow all sound the same, this isn’t at all helped by the fact that yg has recycled songs from old groups to give to the new ones multiple times. I know that companies will always have a distinct sound, but if you compare other companies to yg, yes there’s an overall company sound but their individual groups sound different, I mean even take nct subunits they are all technically in the same group but their subunits have different musical identities, take twice and itzy, there’s definitely similarities but they still feel like two different groups with different sounds and styles, with yg it’s just not the case, I can see bm doing black pink songs, I can see somi doing bm songs, hell even treasure who are probably their most different group in the company still have the exact same formula and sound that black pink has but it’s just slightly more grungier. Another thing is that not only are they not sonically diverse they’re also not lyrically diverse, almost all of them are about haters and how much money they have, and while yes it’s fun to listen to a group shit talk some people sometimes, the key word is sometimes, it gets tired and repetitive really quick, back to the fact that they reuse old songs/samples they also love to reuse lyrics too, like theres serval iterations of “pedal to the metal” it’s almost a yg catchphrase. And the thing that annoys me the most is that these groups can and sometimes do have their own sound, specifically in their b sides, but the title track is always the same thing over and over again, and usually how you discover groups is through the title track, but if I’m just an every day listener and I listen to these groups tts I’m just going to assume they all have the same style and production so it’s not worth it to stan more than one cuz you’re basically getting the same thing just in different fonts.

I've always been the type to enjoy an empty chorus and I do think I'll end up liking Meow, but I think there is a time and place for it. With Meow, they're trying to appear effortless and cool, but it ends up feeling lazy and careless + generic and overdone. This isn't necessarily because of the song itself, but because people are tired of this sort of song in K-Pop (especially by Teddy). Boombayah and Whistle worked because they both do so well at succeeding in exactly what they set out to achieve: Boombayah sounding fierce and... boom-y (pls someone give me a word), and Whistle with that effortlessly cool sound. Also, another thing about BP's songs is that most of them are not incredibly simple and lacking in substance. Except for some that feel more generic, most of their songs aren't even trying to convey the same vibe and feel different, despite using this same formula (i mean compare D4 to HYLT). However, songs like Batter Up and Meow feel like they're doing the exact same thing in a mildly different font (which did occur with a couple BP songs as well, of course). Coupled with the (honestly) boring concept and mvs + generic and lazy lyrics, it just makes for groups with no real identity except for "badass and cool" which, once again, is very mass-produced nowadays. Sound being overdone aside, are we not in a era of lyricism? In order to sustain popularity in the west, you must have good lyrics. All of the most popular artists in the west are known for their lyrics: Taylor swift, drake, olivia rodrigo. Even ones like Pinkpantheress, charli xcx, and chappell roan are well liked for the lyrics they write. Heck even the popular korean acts were well liked for their lyrics. BTS's lyrics were extremely praised and black pink debuted at the perfect time singing "I don't need a boy I need a man" which made them stand out amongst other ggs at the time that had cookie cutter love songs. YG is riding on Blackpink's popularity by trying to make all their ggs have these "kickass" lyrics without any substance. "With my girls. We gon’ shake sumn. We don’t run We don’t chase ‘em" makes me sick thinking some random old man wrote these lyrics. All the most popular female artists in the west write their lyrics. (All the examples I provided earlier along with meghan thee stallion, nicki minaj, and sza). The kickass concept was cool in 2017 but now that kpop is competing with the western marketplace(which is filled with so many badass women) a lot of female kpop idols seem silly with these sloppy attempts at trying to look cool or edgy. Singing about haters and making money? You just debuted babes. The fact the YG doesn't want to establish unique identities for their female idols stems from capitalism, desperation, and misogyny. The last point being no surprise at all but often not acknowledged. Afterall, it seems the goal is to make them brand ambassadors and turn them into models like YG did with blackpink's career. Nothing necessarily wrong with that. I think the girls get more money from being a model once then they ever would by working to the bone performing at inkigayo dozens of times per year. BUT STILL, there isn't much ability to grow when you are blackpink 2.0. Their careers and reputations are going to be lackluster. And even if they try to change things up, it might just be too late.

I really don't see how MEOW is a full Teddy formula with an empty chorus. The "shake somethin'/chase 'em/bass drum" section is the chorus and it's a departure from saying Boombayah and variations of it over and over. Secondly, I think the production of MEOW is different from classic Teddy as well. My general impression of his work is that it's very thick. Lots of compression and not a lot of air. My comparisons for how MEOW is being recieved is the Pink Venom chorus and Fearless. I think both of them got unfairly bashed for being more minimalist as expected. I listened to them before seeing the discourse and never got it.

I will say 2 things as to why this won't stop and they don't really have much intention to: 1. If at the end of the day people are still going to watch them and kind of like the group and will spend money on them they've basically accomplished the bare minimum of what the company wants. In capitalism the goal of a corporation is to make as much profit with as little cost as possible (yes even in the realm of art which they should be prioritizing). If you make bare bones songs, drop a few in a year, and still make money then why feel the need to do more especially when you're already know for being dependent on one formula yet it's always successful even if people kind of complain 2. I said this to a friend yesterday after also watching a video essay on East Asians loving luxury brands and choujimi's video on idols being more like influencers and becoming global ambassadors for luxury brands like 2 weeks after they debut. But yeah this felt more like if models were doing a luxury/popular brand ad (we can see very obvious focus on Adidas, Chanel and LV) but they can sing and dance. YG already has a brand mostly of being cool and rich loud luxury so it makes sense to see if leaning into this more along with the bare bones Teddy sound to basically make low key influencer/model brand idol group. Luxury brands will pay you to be featured, you'll gain more visibility and money being a global ambassador, and fans that value you that will both like your image and it'll motivate a society who praises visible luxury as a status symbol to buy even more to achieve the look of the idol which is a win win for both the luxury brand and the music company Lol for a kpop video we think this is terrible and they should be doing more for idol groups being respected as artists. But for a luxury brand ad we'd be like this is fire bc now we at least get cool singing and dancing for like 3 mins rather than a no more than 20 second ad of just models walking and posing Update: yeah I checked the member profiles and 4/5 of them were famous models

I feel the reason why people are comparing to Babymonster’s batter up it suffers may of the same problems such as under whelming chorus, overuse of samples, and it was disappointing because both group had massive hype over their upcoming debuts

True I agree with most 5th gen debuting are that in music production BUT HERE IS THE THING THAT IS ITCHY Since you compared BABY MONSTER and MEOVV the disadvantage of MEOVV's debut despite of both debut song facing criticism is the lack of ear candy stream. BATTER UP is a song that is catchy and repetitive and each one has vocal color. BUT ITS STREAMABLE even if non-fan or a fan you would likely put it on repeat. MEOW is a song, similar that has catchy, little to know unique instrumentals, chant song, catchy, repetitive. BUT ITS UNSTRESMABLE. Its a song that has is not catchy in the first listen, most people say that it's a grower. Meaning it's unlikely to repeat on playlist it's not as catchy as you hear. UNLIKELY ON REPEAT. Both debut song have same formula for this generation but different in perception of music which is why even K-NETS are divided.

The sad truth is before fans became okay with the barely creative recycled music BP was releasing every few years they had great music. BP got the love and fans because of a debut that suited them and will go down in history. Their follow-up was also quite good. That's what's lacking with Meovv and Baemon, collectively these two groups are properly more talented than BP but debuting with less than mediocre music is working against them. What's got people's attention is how obvious their passion, skills, and talents are. I hope their labels get their acts together. Someone did a Brazilian remix of Meow and it was easily 100x better than what the black label released. Oh and for Meovv's sake, I hope their comebacks are not sporadic....especially after this lackluster debut. It would be wise for them to have a comeback right away.

pls i need teddy to stop composing; babymonster are getting sm better idc what y’all think, forever and like that were bops and sheesh gave them a new concept with actual LORE different than that messy ‘yg signature’ like Batter Up was and it’s all because teddy isn’t involved in the composition.. i really want to see meovv with a single NOT composed by teddy bc ik they’ll have such a different and better sound, either that or teddy really needs to change his formula
