As a reseller on Mercari for several years, like many of you, I was taken back when Mercari announced it was switching fees from sellers to buyers AND allowing buyer returns for any reason. How will all of this play out and what is the potential side affects on buyers AND sellers? Let's take an in-depth look at merchant credit card fees and more. This is my review, my take. I share my research and reselling tips. We invite you to "Like, Subscribe, Comment and Share on your social media. Thanks for watching, Vickie & Mark ~ Avante Avenue

A few corrections to this video. Mercari has an office in Palo Alto, CA (not OH). The ACH fees are $2 or $3, not a %. And, Poshmark for items nearing 5 lbs. I apologize for my errors. This is what happens when editing at 3 A.M. Thank you, Vickie

I’m in Minnesota and I just tried to purchase and there WAS a service fee of $1.50 and a $1.21 payment processing fee. $2.71 extra on the payment. That happened when using my Mercari balance not a card. A $15 purchase turned into $25.

I never heard of company stores before, that was criminal. We have found most tourist places are charging a 15% visitor/customer fee. I was shocked to find the Cherish platform is charging sellers 30% service charge now. Buyers won't like buyers fees. It doesn't make sense with fluctuating fees. I can see customers backing out of sales.

I used to be a big Mercari buyer. Got all the things I didn’t actually need but just wanted from there, they got a lot of my dispensable income. Since they added buyer fees I haven’t bought a single item and have no plans of using the service again if these fees aren’t reverted back to the seller or dramatically lowered.

Yes, it’s too bad, Mercari didn’t consider just splitting the 10% fee with 5% to buyer and 5% to seller. But it’s not even limited to 10% anymore. Some buyers get charged more and some buyers get charged less. So pathetic. Can you imagine if we walked into a local retail store, grocery store or gas station and we’re standing in one check out buying the same thing that someone else is buying in another check out and we’re paying different prices for the same thing? That’s what Mercari is doing. Gouging some buyers and patronizing others which affects seller’s sales. Thank you for watching and sharing your experience and thoughts.

I actually didn’t mind my seller’s fee. I expected it! Mercari is doing the work of setting up the site, running it, etc. I don’t mind paying a fair percentage for that. I’ve been cross listing on Mercari from EBay, and it’s been working out pretty well. I started selling in January and added Mercari in February. I found it easy, since both sites were set up pretty much the same. The new policies have made me change things totally. I didn’t make a 10 percent reduction, but I’m sending lots of offers out to interested buyers. I’m also accepting offers, and reminding myself that I get 100% of the money.

I agree Jeanie! Anyone who has ever had a "retail" business (brick and mortar) knows how expensive it can be. Paying a nominal fee vs. rent, utilities, insurance, etc. etc., makes paying "fees" to sell on an internet venue "nominal" in comparison. I did relist a few items but no sales yet. Good point about "reminding myself that I get 100% of the money!" Thank you!

We were in a very “touristy” town this past week and wandering into a chocolate shop while waiting for our order to be cooking a couple doors down. We picked out a few items to eat as a desert as well as a gift for family when we return. When she said our total was $77, I gasped. I couldn’t even form words! We walked out, got to the car, and I noticed that every single item was uncharged $1 or more just randomly. I went back into the store to ask why this was and she stated that it was because we used a debt card to pay instead of cash. She purely just punched in random prices for each item $1 and more to cover her cost. I was so shocked! Almost $80 for drugstore candy.
@AvanteAvenue
@AvanteAvenue 3 ай бұрын
Shocking!!! If she was going to add a “service charge” for using a debit card, it should be one total at the bottom. Are you sure she’s the owner or just an employee charging you for the candy that she is going to pocket (or money to add to her tip jar)? I would track down the owner and share what happened. And, inform her or him that any service charge requires disclosure and is charged at the end, not random per item. If you get nowhere, look on the receipt (bottom) and see if you find the credit card processing company. Track them down and inform them of this rogue merchant, the charges and lack of disclosure. If you do any or all of this, please report back. This merchant is out of line and/or their employee!!! Thanks for alerting others about your experience!

Of course, you have now smashed it out of the park with this well crafted and informative Mercari Madness video. I took away several things to ponder. I think, too, that these companies make huge shifts, knowing that those younger buyers will never realize there was any other way. They will just accept all these additional fees without questioning it. You're so right in saying this is the tip of the iceberg! Thank you for the many days invested in putting this together so we can further this discussion and have awareness about the multiple issues at play here. Cheers! ❤

You're right. No one likes to pay fees. Although I think this was a bad idea on Mercari's part, it appears that sellers have been on the short end of the stick for a long time. As a buyer on Mercari, I've decided that I will no longer be purchasing anything until they remove the service and processing fees. Once customers change their habits, it's hard, if not impossible to return to past patterns. After all, I can't say that I was purchasing "essentials" on Mercari, they were definitely impulse and "fluff". Makes me wonder if one day their platform will be a thing of the past, and if so, I guess there'll be no surprise there.

Agree, no one likes fees but I do think the best "balanced" solution would be to split the fees between buyers and sellers. My biggest concern from my research is the "unfairness" of the fees charges buyers. Buying from experienced, established sellers cost the "buyer" more in fees while buying from a "new" seller was lower in fees (to help them get their first sales.) That to me, is extremely unfair. Thank you!

I just bought something from Mercari that cost $58.00 in the store it sells for $80.00. I was really excited. I usually never even haggle over prices I just pay what is listed and when the total came up no kidding it was $78.00 between these fees, the shipping and tax. I was so upset. It’s not the sellers fault. But I’m never buying anything on the app again. What’s the point? I mean if I can buy the product for $2.00 more brand new at Sephora and have guaranteed returns if something happens during shipping I’m doing it. This company and all the rest of them really shot themselves in the foot with this. People are sick and tired of this stuff. Thanks for this informative video! I really enjoyed it!

That is just horrible. And, if you watched the entire video, you know that Mercari isn’t stopping at 5 or 10%! They are gouging buyers and helping some sellers but not others by playing with the fees to help out some sellers but not others. I think what would have been somewhat fair is divide the previous 10% fee equally between the buyer and seller. I’m sorry that about your bad experience and completely agree with your analysis of where to buy and where not to buy. Thank you Tori for sharing your experience with others.

The fees varying in amount is concerning. Some sellers are saying their sales are really good now and some saying they are really bad. Are those with really good sales seeing more sales because their buyers are seeing lower fees? Perhaps you are right about the favoritism. I've not closed my account, but I removed my 200+ listings and 200+ drafts. If Mercari were to file for bankruptcy, quite a few people would be out a LOT of money. I'll just stick to selling on Posh, Depop and eBay.

And in regards to returns, not only may they not be returned in the same condition, they perhaps may even return a different items all together. I’ve seen this done quite often with sellers on Amazon. The buyer will return an old paid of used flip flops rather that the $150 sneakers. It’s becoming a huge problem. The buyer gets their money back AND gets to keep the original item. It’s going to be a huge mess for Mercari. I’ve had success selling on Mercari up until recently so I will be going back to EBay. When a mess they’re going to create by doing this!

Hey, this is my first time seeing your channel and I just wanted to add this since I just pulled down all my items from mercari: I sell clothes and I had 2 returns opened immediately after the TOS changed. One of them was a swap out where I sold a pair of jeans and the buyer sent me back a tank top. The only thing mercari will do about it is give the seller credits- which you can't cash out, you can only use them to shop on the app. Not only can I not pay my bills with credits, but your credits are actually worth less than they appear since you now have to pay the service fee. Just really unfair. I was able to find someone selling shipping supplies I needed so I bundled a bunch together, but I can't see myself shopping there regularly since it's such a chore to figure out how much you will be paying on each purchase.

OMgosh! So sorry to hear about your experience but THANK YOU so much for sharing what occurred so that others will be aware. I wouldn't have known and I appreciate the info. It is completely unfair! I didn't see these type of details in Mercari's TOS. Thank you Maya!

I hear you! I’ve been reading a lot of complaints in Facebook groups about buyers being shocked and upset by the fees at checkout. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

I just started selling on Mercari. It’s horrible what eBay charges sellers. Listings are not Free! Promoting your listings is the same as charging for a listing! And my sales (I list in 16 categories) are very low. Guess I will be listing more on Mercari!

I hear you Terry and yes, fees are higher on ebay. I'll try to touch on that in a future VLOG. I will say that more sales and higher priced sales have come with selling on ebay vs. other platforms. We all have our favorites. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Thanks, and I am a sub. You have good content. Why have higher prices if you sell nothing. eBay will only keep charging these high fees. I don’t see that going away.

I’m not sure why you say that no one is selling anything on eBay and making profit. Obviously, so many of us wouldn’t be doing it if we weren’t making money. Of course, the fees have to be considered, but there’s still much profit to be made.

Very comprehensive video. I'm glad I don't bother with Mercari anymore. I tried selling through them and both times it went badly for me. I've also seen other sellers have their accounts frozen with no explanation which is why I rarely leave more than $50 in my seller account on any platform. The auctions and thrift stores I shop charge a fee if you use any kind of card...debit or credit so I try to pull out cash before I get there.They certainly aren't making things any easier, are they?
@AvanteAvenue
@AvanteAvenue 4 ай бұрын
I've heard of frozen accounts before to but now I know that if you don't request your money to be held for future purchasing, it goes......where? In their pocket??? We haven't had fees at thrift stores (yet) but another small restaurant again yesterday only this time they wanted over 3% (we paid cash). Thank you!

The same happened to me at a gas station. They charged me for using my debit card. It was like $3.67. And i didnt get any of it back. Needless to say, I dont get gas there anymore.

Oh yes, it’s happening everywhere. We declined to sign up at local gas station and give them our checking account information to get their discount. It’s happening everywhere and they are not disclosing it. It’s now considered the norm to pass on the credit card fees, so it appears. We have to be the ones to ask.

Thank you for such an informative video! I’ve been leaning towards cash and think I’ll lean in further. The crazy thing to me is that with these credit cards / fees… we never actually see cash exchange hands! I’m a very concrete sequential learner, and it baffles me that I or EBay deposits my money in my account, then if I use a credit card, I have to pay someone to use a plastic card that stands in for the cash I deposited 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Cash is king… I believe Jesus in King, but cash sure seems the way to go here! Girl, I can’t keep up!

I think there is a movement to eliminate cash, but it’s going to be replaced with fees on all of our transfers. What good is that? Thank you Kathy for watching and comment!

Irene Dr during COVID’s height that someone posted on social meeting that a restaurant they had been to before charged them a Covid fee. I think it was a pretty night percentage and they weren’t notified prior. Also a lot of small coffee shops stopped posting prices.

Another reason not to use credit cards...I started carrying good "fashioned" checks. And always carry cash. Will use my debit card if there's a fee. If they don't take any of these, I leave... Lol.

Hi I wanted to share about my recent purchase from Mercari Item price $20.00 Delivery $6.99 Service fee $2.80 (14% cost of item) Payment processing fee $1.44 (another 7%) Tax $2.48 You paid...$33.71 😮 For for a $20 item plus shipping, tax and extra new fees and I'm sure the tax is off cost with extra fees I've spent over $1,000 in the last 12 months buying clothing and personal stuff. Which would now cost an extra $210 🤔 Not happy about that I'm a reseller too, I use to sell on eBay...returns and fees eventually cost more than my time was worth. I may try mercari and use part of sales in store to save cost. But I won't be buying much from them anymore because of fees. And if I do, I will offer more than 20 % less to sellers because of fees.

Thank you so much Adam for sharing your experience! The fees most certainly do ADD UP over time. Yes, ebay has plenty of fees but if you can get your items at a very low price and sell for $30+, it's not too bad. Thanks again for sharing!

@AvanteAvenue

Yes, I’ve heard the return horror stories! Luckily, I’ve only had one buyer who claimed that the new in box Farberware was “inauthentic” in order to get a free return. She cut out the original price tag but taped it back on to return. I think she tried to return it at a local store and found out it was not in their system. Meaning it was “vintage New in box” set of little pans. I guess is when she couldn’t get the original price from a store she decided to return it. Overall, we’ve had very little issues. Mainly I think because we don’t offer returns. With Mercari, I think the fair thing to do would’ve been to split the 10% fee between buyer and seller. But, Mercari is charging more than 10% to some buyers. The whole fee structure is unbalanced and unfair. Thank you, Miki!
