I asked an automotive engineer the same question, the answer is whatever stock system a manufacturer puts in a car has to be compliant with very strict safety and quality standards. (how they react or break in an accident, how they manage the constant resonance, how they take the temperature when you leave your car in the sun or in the freezing cold, etc. You get the idea) Consumer grade electronics rarely meet these criteria and I guess Mercedes doesn't have a whole hardware division for developing cutting edge tablets for cars, so you get the shitty 10 year old infotainment systems. I do agree that for the price you pay for supposedly premium car, you would deserve a much better system. Hopefully we'll get a new generation of car tablets soon because they can't get away with these "archaic" devices for much longer 😂

It's all nonsense. Manufacturer's just don't like to acknowledge that they're terrible at certain things, UX and UI being two major ones. They could easily use Android Auto with some fancy skins if they wanted to, ala Volvo/Polestar. They'd rather ship a half arsed digital experience which is all in house, rather than giving credit where it's due. All this testing nonsense still applies to marque's who use AA, so clearly that's not the reason.

As a long time Benz owner, I have to say that I have some complaints though. The center screen is large, so it's awkward to use it as a touch screen. Even more awkward is trying to use the incredibly sensitive touch button on the steering wheel. The range is also a problem. I don't drive a lot, but it definitely causes range anxiety watching your battery % dip so quickly. Finally, the most common criticism is also true: It's kind of boring to look at.

From an engineering standpoint, I think that the shape is pretty good, but from a business and consumer standpoint, it's off putting an ugly. Would you take a vehicle that is willing to give you 450 mi of range but it looks ugly, or would you be willing to take a vehicle that gives you 300 and 20 mi of range, but it looks really nice? Dude, for that price, you have to luv it. I have the GLC 300 and I luv it, but I do miss the buttons, the display is very distracting. Like you said, you need to get used to it. I don't think car designers realize that when you're driving, you can't be looking at such a big screen unless you have a co-pilot (Star Trek comes to mind). Also, glad you said the car makes noises, mine makes some noises and it makes me wonder if there's something wrong with it. But now, hearing you say that, it puts me at ease that these cares just do that. Great review.

If u think thats ugly wait till you hear about their $1200 bucks a year subscription to use the full power of a car you already paid for 😑

The thing holding mercedes back it that they are still producing ice vehicles, the moment they fully transition to all electric is when the cool inovations will happen.

I'll rather get an Ioniq 5 N over these like 10x times. And for half the price. I hope you get to review it someday. I'll like to know your opinion on the simulated shift and sounds.

I think I’m missing a word how I would feel like having to drive this car. Like, overwhelmed by useless features, annoyed by gadgety tech, bothered by complexity of little things, nervous about that AI assistant not being able to perform the easiest tasks and it also has a load time for a “hello”. Maybe the word I’m looking for is: scared?

This car makes me love my Model 3. If I want full power, I press the accelerator. No settings to change. If I want less regen, I feather the throttle. No settings to change. Also, I don't carry a bulky key fob in my pocket. I do envy having a suspension. I am not sure my 2018 Model 3 has one of those. if anyone knows how to turn it on, please let me know.

One day I will be rich enough to call this ugly. 😢

Key area is actually just in case your key fob battery is dead. Put your key in the center console and you can still use your car

I reckon the normal EQE 350 with better range is a solid looking car :)
