In regards to the Hyperscreen UI layout, I've seen similar issues before....in late 90s, early 2000s. Cars started getting a lot of new functions you could control, and Ergonomics was a real issue. Then the industry seemed to follow certain standards that made sense, and get similar layouts where it counted, so you could go from car to car and quickly figure out most of the essential functions very quickly. With touchscreen controls, we are back in the Wild West, and it may take a while before auto makers figure out common sense controls that will become similar between all makes. It sucks, but give it 5-10 years. I'm still a fan of analog controls for some things that don't require any eye contact

The brake pedal reminds me of old 1970’s cruise control. You’d set it and it’d pull the gas pedal away from your foot. It was very disconcerting at first, but it only happened once when you set it. I can’t imagine chasing the brake pedal. That’s a recall and a class action waiting to happen.

Funny enough, as much as I hate the moronic idea behind it, I didn't find the break pedal to be much of an issue in real-world driving. It's still such an unexplainably idiotic thing to do though. Usually some of these weird decisions from legacy car makers are driven by the desire to not alienate their aging customer base, and make EVs more "similar" to ICE cars. In this case though, it's just a baffling choice, as no ICE car has that stupid behaviour.

Funny, I always thought making the break pedal move to the “new” mechanical breaking position makes sense. Some cars will give you no mechanical braking until you reach the “new” position and then you will get, suddenly, the brakes. New position means you depress and you immediately get the pads to work. I love it
@LinasKricenas Жыл бұрын
Exactly. People could panic when they start pushing the pedal and there is no reaction (until pedal does not reach position where it is already virtually "pushed" by regeneration). For some it may seem that brakes failed and they could hit brakes right to the end which may be dangerous (especially on highway).
@TommyApel Жыл бұрын
That there has been my biggest problem with ev's so far, once you get into your zone and forget that you have regen on and you go damn this isn't slowing down fast enough and then you naturally apply 2x pressure but you then hit the actual breaks but now it's almost like an emergency stop kinda force which noone behind you is ready for. so yeah I think the way mercedes implemented it is way smarter.

The brake lever moving is definitely strange, but it's hard to strike a good balance. I don't own an EV yet, but I recently rented an VW ID.4 for a long road trip. I don't think the brake pedal moved, but it definitely had this intuitive/smart regen braking, and I actually loved it. If there was a long downhill section I didn't have to worry about changing the amount of regen, or adjusting with the brake, to keep a perfect distance to the car in front. I just chose the distance I wanted, and it kept that for me by increasing or decreasing the amount of regen. But it didn't just pay attention to cars, also did it for sharp bends and it kept track of the speed limit. So if I was regening down a hill at lets say 80km/t, but then the speed limit changed to 50km/h, I didn't have to do a thing, it just applied more regen and continued at 50km/h. As long as you have the ability to switch such smart assists on/off as you please, or override it when needed, I think they are awesome.

Since more regeneration brakes the car more it adjusts the brakepedal accordingly. That way, how quickly the car slows down with say a half way pushed pedal is consistent with different levels of regeneration. It does make sense in a way. I dont think I would like it either though. But maybe its just a thing that is weird because its unusual and you just have to get used to it, sort of like teslas steering wheel.

@NoBaconForYou Жыл бұрын
Doesn't make sense. The brake pedal is not connected to the motors. I would assume it's actually just braking, and there is no regen on this car. The pedal only moves if the brakes are being used, at least if it's hydraulic. One would expect the necessary brake pressure to change if you changed the regen level. Pretty sure Mercedes is just scamming people. This car should be sold for no more than $80k.
@NoBaconForYou Жыл бұрын
In my manual transmission car, i have stronger engine braking at high engine speed (similar to regen), if I downshift and the engine is at 6000 RPM, it will have stronger engine braking than at 3000 RPM. If the brake pedal wiggled around based on the strength of engine braking, that would be extremely dangerous. I'm like 95% sure the Mercedes is not regen braking. There is only one way the brake pedal moves, and that's by activating the brakes. I'm sure we will eventually hear the brakes squealing on older cars when they let off, expecting regen.

Since I haven't driven an EV I didn't understand why Mercedes where doing this, so when every review complained about it I assumed this was just outrageous but after learning why it is done this why this makes sense. What drives me crazy though is how everyone just accepts the Tesla yoke as "ah you will get used to it" but they think this break implementation is the stupidest thing ever invented. It's many things Tesla does where a lot of reviewers don't criticise to the extent other cars get criticised and this is why we are losing climate control nobs 😂.

I have had Mercedes cars for a while now, 2 GLS, 1 GLE and 1 S 560. I am expecting my EQS SUV 580 next month. I tried the EQS but was very put off by the brakes on that car. EQS SUV has much better brakes. While I test drove it, I did not notice the brake pedal moving at all, which is strange because one of my main focus during the test drive was brakes. To me it means that I will possibly not be bothered by it much. The software piece I agree is a little too touch heavy, and I hope Mercedes cleans it up. The driving experience of the car though is awesome, and the technology and comfort are better than any other electric vehicle I have tested, and that's saying something because I do agonizing research over the car I plan to buy. For me, this seemed to fit like a glove. The range numbers worry me a little though. Mercedes claims 340 miles, which was a big selling point for me, and you memtioned 260-280. So many avionics systems have literally everything you could ever want as a pilot, but not much of it is very intuitive. This frustrates me as a user, and I don’t want to see that in my car at all. He is coming from a Tesla that is basically only active branking with the brake pedal. While every other oem has regen braking on the pedal for the first 20% of the travel way, and brakes after. Moving the pedal down to the corresponding regen level that you would also have if you were regenning manually makes total sense for consistency. If the car is regenning hard automatically and you aren't on the brake, then touching the brake slightly would take away from regen instead of adding more. Without the brake moving, you would basically brake less by touching it than just keeping the foot of the gas pedal.

The pedal is where it should be for that level of braking. Sounds weird, but actually makes sense, despite the couple weeks it took to retrain the brain. Agree with the slightly inconvenient IU, but you can actually configure it to have a dock, which helps. The aircon controls could definitely be improved by having physical buttons, but I rarely have to touch them, so it's not that much of a hassle. Great video. Can you do some videos that really go in-depth on the infotainment tech only? For example, while the MBUX may not be for you, an in-depth of the Zero Layer aspect of MBUX is something that I rarely see in reviews and am very interested in. There is a vision that is being lost to many reviewers I feel as most don’t spend enough time with the car for it to learn your habits and thus customize the screen automatically for you as it was built to do. At the end of the day, just like a PC or Mac, most people use very little of the true capabilities of the machine because of their routines and habits. The intelligent learning in MBUX is envisioned to do that for you without you needing a software engineering degree to set up your car. Honourable mention should also go to the gesture controls in the car, that would be an interesting in-depth tech video.
@sam0711er Жыл бұрын
Hi! Ex-Mercedes designer here who worked on the Zero Layer tiles and the settings. You're right, the idea is that MBUX learns your behavior and habits over time and shows tiles at the bottom that are relevant to you in the moment depending on where you go, what you do, who is in the car (that's why you have profiles). I assume (not sure if true?) Marques uses Android Auto most of the time instead of MBUX itself (I understand why… HERE Maps suck imo), and because he didn't have a personalized profile I assume he missed out on the intelligence behind the system. It's actually pretty smart when it gets the opportunity to learn more about you. After some time, you don't necessarily have to enter a certain app again as what you're trying to do will show up as a Zero Layer tile at the bottom proactively. The problem is just that Android Auto and CarPlay are completely autonomous systems and MBUX can not learn about a user's behavior when they only stick to those solutions. I know that the settings UI is not optimal, but that's just caused by a HUGE amount of features (which Marques mentioned in his vid) which all often need some sort of setting. Believe me, this is already a much nicer version of settings than what it used to be! :D

I'll give you the brake pedal, and sub menus issue, but the yoke steering actually puts your hands in a better position for the airbags, gear selectors are only really used during low speed maneuvers anyway, and dashboards maybe with the exception of climate controls are usually just packed with features you wouldn't be fiddling with while driving anyway

The worst part is that Teslas used to be better than other cars at 3 point turns. Thanks for your real-world review. Over-engineering is what it's called. Funny thing is,(or not so funny,) Mercedes, with all their design and implementation acumen, can't seem to make reliable cars. Design simplicity, ease of use, and reliability are luxuries in and of themselves. Overcomplicating things is just a way to show off technology, also makes everything more expensive, but this will soon turn off consumers and drivers. (If cars today are so much better and safer, then why do we still have so many crash fatalities? Answer: They're also faster and more powerful, and driver responsibility is removed; as cars get "smarter", people get more stupid). For many of us, our cars are an extension of ourselves, but too much tech makes some completely detached. (And I write this on an iPad, knowing full-well that I'm addicted to it!)

So I have the 2023 EQE. And I traded a 2022 Model Y for it. I set the regen to strong on the EQE, bc its pretty much the only way to get both regen braking to a stop AND also get brake hold without having to push the brake pedal hard to activate it (which is how Mercedes designed the brake hold feature which is annoying as hell). I think the strong regen is pretty well balanced for one pedal driving on the EQE and I also think it does it better than the model Y, in some ways. It's VERY rare that I actually use the brake pedal to brake, with strong regeneration activated. And yes there have been times when I needed to use the brake pedal bc I misjudged the distance to stop and it is really weird. That does not happen with the Tesla. So I can relate with Markes (is that how his name is spelled?) when it comes to that issue. But hands down the quietness of the cabin, the ultra smooth suspension and the fit and finish of these new Mercedes models is amazing. It really feels luxurious compared to Tesla. Tesla's are quick and have great tech. But they simply lack the luxurious, quality feeling of the Mercedes. Also, The EQ series of vehicles do the automatic stuff VERY gently compared to Tesla. I think Mercedes programmed the autonomous stuff to smoothly transition when it comes to braking and especially when the assistive driving is concerned. In my opinion, it's superior to that of the Tesla autopilot in many ways.The Tesla is so abrupt in its movement sometimes. Like a teenager driving and a lot of people do not like it when they are riding as passengers. Not so with the Mercedes. It's extremely gentle and smooth.
