Mercedes-AMG GT63 S vs Porsche Panamera Turbo S | Which Luxury GT is best? | Autocar

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door S is among the fastest and most expensive. It has a 4.0-litre V8 making a whopping 630bhp, which is sufficient to push the GT to almost the 200mph mark (where conditions allow, obvs).
And its fiercest rival is the Porsche Panamera, which we're also testing here in the top available specification. The Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, then, gets a total of 671bhp owing to a twin-turbocharged V8 engine but also an electric motor, giving it a short electric-only range, but all the performance in the world when motor and engine are kicking together.

@@alhajriabdulla I've got the 4 ehybrid. For me it was a no brainer. The car really suits electric. Its so quiet on my commute. Through gear acceleration is way more than you will ever need. Have a charge point at home and work. My daily commute is about 15 miles each way so if i want i can do it purely electric. Its a family car, a luxury cruiser and a toy when i want it to be. I have the sports exhaust and in the flesh it sounds great. I wanted to put my toe in electric vehicles but still love the sound of the V6. In a few years time we will all be driving noddy cars so I'm enjoying my V6 sound while i can. Have to say there's so much rubbish on here. In normal everyday driving i honestly can't tell the car weighs 300kg more even after having a turbo for a week. In the real world the hybrid feels faster because of the instant hit from the electric motors and living in the north of England i don't have to worry about the none existent charge network on longer journeys. What ever you do get the rear wheel steering it makes maneuvering what is a very big car a lot easier in tight situations. Over 8500 miles its returned over 55 mpg equivalent after taking into account electric cost but i play a lot. A friend of mine has the turbo and gets 18mpg. What ever you get you won't regret it. I drive a Mercedes, I like Porsches, I'm a German Car fanboy. But I also love the the Over Head Valve General Motors LS and now LT engines. The latest and greatest offering from GM is the LT5, which you can order in a crate on the internet for $18K USD and it makes 755 HP and 715 ft-lbs. And it's exterior physical dimensions are SO SMALL! It's just hard to get excited by Mercedes/Porsche engine numbers when an Over Head Valve Chevrolet motor makes such superior numbers. Meh. I'd still take the AMG, obviously!

Driving from Hamburg to Stuttgart, have a nice drive! Driving fast is a complete dream because the Autobahn in Germany is overcrowded. One of the busiest Autobahn network in Europe. All the car company's make faster and faster cars but where can you really drive fast? I'm from Belgium and the police are installing everywhere track control systems with mean they stop installing speed cameras witch is a system when everybody nows where they are everybody breaks passing the speed camera. Traject control is a system that when you pass the camera and you drive a driveway were max speed is 70 Km/h and after a distance to the next camera witch can be 1Km, 2 Km, 5 Km or even some 500m and you drive to fast over those distances the sophisticated technology takes always a picture off your number plate and you will receive a letter with a nice fine. Also this system by taking pictures of your number plate can in this way establish when a car is stolen or a person is wanted the system reacts immediate and the police will try the catch you!!!!

I agree completely with NZsarge1, I too would choose the Panamera Sport Turismo Turbo. I am certain the weight saving over the e-hybrid would make it feel almost like a different car to drive hard on a twisty road - weight has always been and will always be the arch-enemy of how a car accelerates and handles. By the way, the rear cabin of the AMG GT looks almost like a poverty spec after looking at the rear cabin of the Panamera. But that's just my personal opinion.

Like this reviewer but I’ve now owned the amg and driven the Porsche thoroughly. So not on nice smooth test track but real uk roads. Both are awesome cars but this review misses the big big difference- ride quality- amg is way way more rigid than Porsche on non well tarmaed perfectly flat roads. Plus the engine, I do way less shifting down in Porsche as no lag. Great torque in amg but there’s real lag ( as he mentions). Merc tech superior, especially assisted driving. The kid in me loved the burbles but again it depends why you want the car. I spend all my time eating fuel to get the burbles. I’m selling my merc and buying the Porsche. Merc is a great slightly comical car. But ride and engine are big differentiators when you’ve driven merc on real roads and lived with it…. And the smile it brings. Porsche smoothness also brings this smile too, just not as brutally.

I got it (after telling me a hundred times that the turbo s is a heavyweight and hence compromised). You'd buy the turbo s if you'd live in certain parts of central Europe where you'd get a tax break on "e-cars" (even on those which aren't really e-cars like the turbo s). Now take a "non e-hybrid" turbo and start again.

I saw a comparisson form the e63 s and a panamera turbo and all in the comments were complaining why they have not choosen the turbo s because the merc was the s version ... ( the e63s was quicker :D) They got the fastest versions of both cars so i dont see any problem with that

The Turbo S is slow, basically the same speed as the Pana Turbo. The S has more power to compensate for the extra weight, and the electric assist eliminates the turbo lag. Only solution, is to find a way to reduce the batteries weight. But since Porsche is going all electric, there will no longer be Turbo models for the next gen. So it doesn't matter anyway.

You're so wrong. Mercedes also has quality class options speed handling etc just as much if not even more than the Porsche. And the presenter claimed that but in reality the gt63s is faster as proven in many other tests. But his point was even if the Porsche was faster he would still pick the amg because ultimately these cars will never be taken to the track so its more about how fun and engaging they are to drive and the amg takes the cake by miles and miles. Not to mention its way more advanced in technology, has way more features and luxurious amenities and sounds way better etc etc.

@ @Eventus Vantos I don't know anyone who feels (overalll) Mercedes has better quality, performance, driveability, tuning, and commitment compared to Porsche ; none! The S class maybe a great car. I'll give it that. However, I can't think of any other Mercedes that competes against Porsche in the Handling; Quality, and reliability sectors. Certainly not JD Power, Consumer Reports, Enthusiast, and/car magazines who feel that way. Porsche's a different type of car company. The Panamera is a purpose built (with all the good that comes with notion) Luxury, Sports Sedan. The Mercedes (iby comparison) is an afterthought, tarted up faux E-Class Boy Racer.

Will Jolliff AMG’s engines are brutish and give you boatloads of torque. Porsche’s ones tend to make you want to rev them. Neither has better “character” than the other - they’re just different.

LOL so not true. Porshe said that car would have 780 hp but it turned out to have 680hp. The 4 door hybrid will have about 700hp and will weigh around 2.5 tons. It will be 0.1 sec faster then the 63s. Edit: It will come in 2022.

Megatron still makes a big difference in ride and handling. Have you ever driven a sports car on snow tires? It dulls the experience quite a bit.

The AMG shape I love most is the old E-class. These modern designs don't impress me.

AMG looks kinda tacky to me. Both interior and exterior looks of lesser quality and the exhaust note doesn’t appeal to me because I’m not 16. Also the transmission is cruder. AMG is ripping people off by charging them soo much more for a tarted up E-Class by classifying it a GT 🙄 Porsche nailed it with this car. Pretty pedestrian review really.
