To clarify a few things from the video, I work at Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart myself. First, the GT and the SL don't have much in common; one of the few shared components is the door. As for the SL 43, it has a 4-cylinder engine and also comes with all-wheel drive. And you can order the car with back seats and when you have them you can fold them down.

I have to say that in recent times, Doug has dropped the effort and quality of information that he puts into his videos. In the first eight minutes of the video he states that the SL43 has a V6 (it doesn't, it only gets the 4 cylinder), furthermore he talks about the GT only being offered with 2 seats (also wrong, it is obviously a 2+2). Looks like a small old S65 with Roma tail lights. The SL can look refined but the AMG GT should look way more muscular than what we are being served right now.

Dare I adjust the Doug Score? The SL received a 3 in practicality, the GT a 2. BUT Doug misspoke when he said the GT doesn't have back seats, they're a no cost item. That ups the score from 2 to 3. BUT there's more, the GT hatchback is a BIG benefit over convertibles like the SL. This means the GT should receive a 4 for practicality. Upping the total score from 66 to 68, moving up the board as a result.

I like this thing. Looks like a great road trip sports car. Had a lot of creature comforts, is comfortable but can also crush your spleen on a track if you want. Could have used it on our most recent road trip on the Washington State peninsula when we ran into a drag racing track. Would definitely have detoured for some impromptu drag racing had I had this :).

The fact this was beat by an M8 (a vehicle that was released in 2018) is so embarrassing. Mercedes gotta focus on performance instead of how much ambient lights & screens they can stick in vehicles.

The M8 gives you a back seat too. Apples to apples.

While I don't necessarily have an issue with Mercedes' approach to the new GT since it does make a lot of sense from a business perspective, however, I do believe that it's not as special as the first generation of the AMG GT since it was actually a true sports car/supercar with its transaxle and front mid-engine layout. The original AMG GT also didn't share a platform with other Mercedes Benz models whereas the new AMG GT shares the same platform with the new SL. It's now more of a grand touring car when compared to the first generation. Overall, the new GT still has solid performance, but it has definitely gained a little bit of weight and has also become more practical which can be seen as either a positive or a negative to some. I personally prefer the first generation of the AMG GT, specifically the 2017 facelift. Regardless of how you look at it, the new AMG GT has people talking.

An AMG never holds value as well as a Porsche. I bought my C63 used in 2012 with 31k miles and a year of warranty remaining. The car had depreciated 40% in 3 years.
