Yesterday I had the privilege of driving an EQA for a day and a half, lent to me by Mercedes-Benz service department. Apart from the amazing acceleration, it was easy to forget that I was driving an EV. My only criticism is range because we live in a huge country with wide open spaces and tiny towns with a single petrol pump. Also, sometimes I have to wait for appointments etc so I sit in the car with the engine running to remain comfortable in air conditioning or heating. This would be a no-no for an extended time in an EV. I think the solution lies in having small engines with powerful alternators to continuously charge the battery if you know you will be on an extended trip. Naturally cost will be the downside. Thanks again as usual for your informative content. I always look forward to it.

Question: did you refuel your loaner? What was the price per watt? E.g. price per mile of travel? Did you factor in your average hourly wage while waiting? At highway 24mpg, and a 20 gallon tank, I can get somewhere around 480 miles of travel for (depending on market price) $80 dollars (and maybe 10 minutes of travel time stopped for filling up, plus the impulse buys of energy drink, water, sandwich, coffee, etc.). I've seen numbers above 30mpg for "auto-charging" EV's, so your comment there is very relevant, especially for getting from gas station to gas station.

@@davesmith5656 interesting questions. To fully charge the EQA would be around $50 AUD. This would get around 350 km so the cost per km is around 14 cents. My A200 sedan uses on average 6L per 100 km for a total of 21L for the same distance (350 km). The current price of petrol is $2.38 AUD per Litre for a total of just on $50. So using the fast charger, the fuel and electricity cost is identical. However, like you, I would prefer to not have charging anxiety and never worry if I’m going to make it to any destination. I think I will stick to petrol for now. On the other hand, the service costs around $800 per year on average. So I should factor that in compared to a service on the EQA which should be negligible. Thanks for giving me a chance to think about the actual costs.

@@profphilbell2075 ---- One other thing about petrol v. electric is that you can walk to the nearest gas station with a 4 litre can. Or of course if you like adventurous off-the-map trips, load up some gas cans. And extra water. Always take extra water.

@@davesmith5656Morning, I live in England… if there’s one thing we don’t need it’s extra water! It’s been non stop rain nearly all year. I look out the window and it’s grey, dank and 7°C in the lead up to our summer. I’ve got a GLA45, I’m not going electric until they prize (or for that read “price”) the keys out of my hands. Enjoy the warmth 👍🏻👍🏻🦘🦘

Funny that they used the Las Vegas Strip for their ad. Here in Las Vegas both Mercedes dealers can’t sell an EV to save their lives! They are eating them big time! Their lots are filled with them and my sales guy is predicting that in 2 years Mercedes will give up on EV’s and go back to gas engines 100%! 😊

I had an interesting experience today that I would like to share. I’m not sure how it happened but I left the boot (trunk) open all night. Thankfully, nothing bad happened, but I did notice that the boot light was dim. I assumed I had drained the battery and prepared myself to call for assistance. However, when I pushed the start button the car turned on and started as if nothing had happened. When I went back to open the boot with the kick underneath, it did not work. I had to press the catch at the back near the license plate / rear camera. I also noticed that if the car was locked, the boot would not open at all unless I first unlocked the car. I gave up thinking that this would be a workshop job. But after driving on the freeway for about 2 hours, everything worked again. I since discovered that I in fact had drained the auxiliary battery - just not enough to trigger a warning. So the lesson of the day is that while the car is off, the auxiliary battery handles the accessories. That said, I’m happy to stand corrected!

Interesting, but……I feel we are seeing lots of reviews on Electric cars at the same time as many countries including the UK are becoming less keen on EV’s. Many people still prefer petrol so can we have more reviews please of petrol vehicles. There are lots of updated every day petrol cars around this year. I think many of your viewers would welcome this…..please! PS still enjoy your videos. Always good work

Thank you! Don’t worry I’ve only got three more videos planned with EV’s till mid summer. My focus is to deliver what you and everyone watching want to watch. But I am a fan of EV’s so they might make an appearance from time to time 😛 My main focus though is to make high quality videos that you want to watch and as I live cars and tech, they kind of go hand in hand. So quick question, when you say everyday petrol cars, have you got any models in mind?

Last weekend at our dealership, there was a 2019 G Class on the lot, with a sold sign. Only been there a few day's. They also have 2 new G class coming this week, or next.....already sold. So that tells me our area love them. There is also the 2024 GLS 600 Maybach on the showroom floor, and 2 more also coming. They probably will be sold by the end of the month. Now as for EV's in our area? The owner told me they sell 1 or 2 a quarter. There are 15 assorted EQB, EQE, and EQS couple sedan's and the others are SUV's. They have asked MB to quit sending them. However I will bet that the All-Electric G 580 WILL sell here.

Resistant to change, maybe, but a) drain on the electric grid, and the social, as well as economic costs of that, b) convince me batteries won't spontaneously catch fire in my garage overnight. Electric power generation is a primary user of water resources, second only to agriculture, IIRC, somewhere around 45% of all water usage. Household consumer water use, including watering lawns, is somewhere between 3% and 6% of all water usage. Pushing EV's as "ecologically friendly" seems an awful lot like a huge lie. If someone wants to argue higher HP, torque, and 0-60 in 1.8 seconds, that seems more truthful. But show me your EV electric bill! I have yet to see one anywhere! Edit added: I'm no physics major at all, but translating the world's fossil fuel energy generation for wheeled transportation to electricity is not a minor % portion of GDP. Petroleum products as fuel source (energy) is billions of dollars of GDP. Pls see: Saudi Arabia, Dubai, throw-away Bugatti cars, World Islands, the oil majors' gross sales, ubiquitous gas stations, etc.. Maybe someone here has enough physics acumen to do a ballpark equation of gasoline energy to electric energy, and the effect on electric power generation demand - and the cost of that?! When you add in the increased demand for water, what happens? Societies are already strained for electricity, and agriculture is already strained for water, while petroleum is not only abundant, but has incredible delivery infrastructure already in place.
