Mercedes-Benz 240TD Diesel | SLS- And A Big Fail...

This is a S123 (sometimes called w123) from 1985 with a 2.4 Diesel engine.
I am trying to see if I can make the SLS on this car work again.. apparently all the bits are there.... or are they?

I remember we used to put those rubber blocks in springs to keep them from bottoming out when they were worn or tired. You may be able to use air shocks to lift the rear some if you can get one that fits or a heavier duty spring. Good Luck with it and it is a nice looking car.

Bad luck! One of my oldest friends had the W123 estate 30 years ago and loved it. There seem to be none on the road anymore here in England!

Hi, maybe there is an alternative, Monroe AirLift shocks. Even if they are not listed for this Benz, it must not necessarily mean much: For example the shocks with AirLift for Volvo 245 are not built any more , but instead you can buy those for 89-97 Ford Aerostar (MA768) for € 184,97 (May 2022) incl. Customs and shipping from Rock Auto. These shocks fit and work quite well with my 245 and you do not have to switch to the bumpy stronger springs. It took a few measurements and search, but it worked well. haha, you may also fill up the room inside of the springs with tennis balls. No joke, that worked well to bring my 245 with the leaky old Monroes back home all the way from Norge. Hinge up and squeeze in.

I have no idea how the system works, but it seems strange that you got any smoke at all in the return line, with it not being attached at the rear. But maybe there is a valve or blockage that prevents the smoke getting out there? That diesel engine sounds like every taxi from my child hood - really makes me nostalgic haha!

There's a workshop in northern Poland (near Gdańsk if I remember) which specialises in renovating nivo rams. Perhaps they may have some on shelf for sale. If you'd be interested I might do some research. Just need to recall their name ;:) it was some years back i used them for w124 rams renovation.

You can put w116 springs in the back. Then it will higher. If you dont want it soooooo high ju can just cut the spring off😁

Apart from finding the leaks in the ride levelling system its a 240D l suppose they are ss reliable as the 300D l also the other day thereis a Mercedes 123 in for repairs at this mechanical workshop near were my wife volunteers and the bonnet was open and l had to have alook which engine was in the Mercedes and is the 5 cylinder turbo diesel a very reliable motor

Well, at least you tried to get it working, but, missing those parts, yeah, that's a big problem to solve, definitely best put that in the "Would be nice to have" category on the list of things to do, given it's seemingly not necessary at the moment... :)

With older Volvos which use Nivomats at the rear for self levelling you can do a similar fix when the very expensive Nivo units fail. Unfortunately the springs used with the Nivos are softer than standard so even if you put HD shocks on the rear will the rear will be low as well as soft. Cure is to put on standard or HD springs in to compensate. I don't know if your MB has had the springs changed to harder ones in a similar way. If not, harder springs would be a much cheaper fix than new pressurised units. No self levelling but a back end which will be able to cope with heavy loads and not over soft like it probably is now.

Yes.. the hydraulic shocks (rams) are changed for normal ones.

En baby olie er et godt alternativ, til røg testeren. Selv nivelerringen der kan man regne med et komplet nyt system, da alt andet er dumt, grundet frakobling af rør, og hydrulik okke kan tåle åbne rør, eller at køre uden olie

I just looked up Sachs dampers for this car and they are not that expensive?
