This is a S123 (sometimes called w123) from 1985 with a 2.4 Diesel engine.
In this video I take it for a small drive and try to pinpoint a couple of issues.
There is an exhaust issue, a SLS issue and a slipping clutch.

Beautiful car. My guess is - tow hitch + slipping clutch + knackered SLS + spring assisters = it's been towing something heavy.

One of the best Mercs ever made. I loved my 280E saloon. It became way to rusty to fix though. I really miss it still.

I LOVE W123s! I had two of them and it pains me not to have one in my life. They are so very, very nice and comfy. That long bonnet, the star at the end, the ride quality of an old, comfy sofa, the wonderful interior, it just is class and quality all the way.

That’s amazing Seppo , the pushing the fuel needle to increase petrol ⛽️ volume and travel further , why did Mercedes do away with it 😁, think how many Krona you could save and am going to research online where I can get one , maybe EBay sells them 👌🏻😉.

My father bought a 1982 W123 240d in 1986/87, having served as a taxi and already done 450.000 km and on its second "Stuttgart" engine. My most enduring memory was that I was in awe of the Mercedes and the perceived superiority of it and its quality, followed by a realisation that it had an abundance of rust everywhere (this being a relatively new car at 4-5 years old at the time!)

What a nice car. I love the chrome and painted hub caps. It does however look older than something from 1985

These were and are beautiful vehicles. The W123's longevity is rightfully legendary. I've been fortunate to have lived and operated in many countries and in so many of them the W123 taxi was ubiquitous ... some beautifully. kept, most beaten to sh*t but still trundling along 😁 Cars of this overall quality will never be seen again. Which goes the same for we Boomers 😂😂😂

There is so much to love about the videos you are making! Watching them just totally engages and relaxes me.. Never any detail is missing, but also not too much chit chat, and no adds, just pure.. I love everything from the name of your channel, the place you are at, the camera angles, the way it is cut, the way you choose your words, and even your beard fits the bill! Thank you for taking us along these splendid rides! You really pay a tribute to those classics like no other!! It resonates with me..And how you manage to cranck out a video every day puzzles me, must be because you are a real minimalist, I love it!!! Thanks so much! greetings from the Netherlands!! One of the few things that worked correctly in my old 300TD was the SLS - and only after I replaced the lines from the pump to the level adjuster valve. I used nickle copper lines which I was able to fish around the rear subframe. Dropping that would have been a major headache.

The suspension spheres are fairly cheap at about £100 each, the hydraulic shocks however are very expensive! but the good news is that they can actually be rebuilt and the only parts needed are two rubber o rings, so they can be rebuilt for virtually no cost, if you have the ability.

Sometimes when fluid holding items have bad seals and you can't get new ones is to replace a fluid with a grease, quite a common "bodge" on Reliant 3 and 4 wheelers in the small car range where the steering boxes use a hypoid oil, the rubber seals blow and dumps the fluid and steering becomes pretty crook, filling the box with a thick bearing grease which won't push out the seals but still lubricate as well as an oil and I have heard folks doing that with diffs on older cars.

A real car, a tank of a thing, and look at it, 475,000km in Northern Europe and it's still going nicely and looks in great condition! I used to live in South Africa, and these 123s have a legendary status over there, known to be able to crack a million miles no problem. Have you ever been to Stuttgart? Your collection is starting to resemble the Porsche and Mercedes Museums lol. What's your plans for the 300 version that's rotten? Is it a panel too far to save it?

I´ve been to Zimbabwe some years back... and to see what drives around down there is amazing..! I´ve been trying to sell the 300... but noone wants it.. its to rotten... So I am considering just to give it a go from time to time... it would be great practice and who know, It might one day be solid again? First step would be to strip it to really know what I am dealing with...

@SeasideGarage Yeah I'm sure people would love to see the Mercedes restoration but it's such a big project! The thing about South African cars was that stuff from Cape Town and Durban and Port Elizabeth would rust because they're next to the seaside. Johannesburg is where the cars never rust, very dry place but everything has sun damage, dashboards and plastic all burst and dried out, fabrics faded to grey, paintwork destroyed with uv rays, but usually solid. Great place to find classic cars.

Couple of thoughts based on past experiences; the ride will be rough in the rear as the "spheres" have burst internally and are full of fluid/no gas. The sunroof "tray" rusts through and water drips through the header. One of the most W123 water leaks i cured was revealed after removing the front wings. There was a perforation of corrosion about 1' below the base of the "A" pillar. Took a while to trace that one.

@@guillaumeromain6694 They are pretty expensive even if they are quite rotten some times. They did have quite substantial rust problems though like many children of the 70's. I think it might have improved somewhat after arch liners (or simular) were introduced in the 80's some time. So if oyu are in the market for one get one as late as possible. I remember my fiends dad had a very nice one when we were kids but that was in the mid 90's. 30 years ago I am afraid.

I had a duck egg blue petrol of one of those, actually had two Mercedes at that time with a AWG Cosworth 190e for when I wanted to drive without kids and when with kids I had the duck egg blue 7 seater... It was a reliable bus, solidly built and had a little mishap when hooking up a pair o' Pioneer gig speakers to an amplifier, I cranked up the sounds and well blew the rear windows out in a shower of broken glass... so had to crawl over a scrappy pile to extract a new set of rear glasses and I put in more sedate sounds... Lost both when I got a divorce from the last missus, she winning both in the settlement wrecking the Cossie within a week and couple weeks later brained the estate up against a bridge parapet so both dead ducks sadly, I didn't care as I had just got my XJ40 V12 Jag, pee pee'd all over her motors, real blokes car the 40 was... esp mine being a 12 pot beastie with abs zero room in the engine bay for a gnat to stroll it was packed with so much stuff :D Sadly that had to go when the whole rear suspension blew up expensively, talking about a grand per strut and not that much cheaper for the needed pipework and pumps, the 12's had different stuff to the straight six and very rare to find one in a scrappie so new was the only route...
