I know you don't like the W202, but I own a 1996 C250 turbodiesel wagon with the OM605 and it has been great. I wanted an S124 but it simply wouldn't fit my garage, so the S202 was the next best thing.

I have a w201 which is om605 powered. I don't know why the original engine was swapped out but the chassis is on a very high mileage which could be a clue. It is a very powerful and usable car, I would not buy a car which had an engine from a different manufacturer transplanted.

Don't forget that the Hagglunds BV206 came as an OM617 powered variant for a while. There's actually one for sale here in the US right now. They want something like $70K for it, unfortunately.

606 N/A v.s 606 big difference, I think UK Diesel is getting 400HP out of 606 N/A and 700HP out of the 606 TD. I would much rather sort the original Mercedes cars they are coming out of than a Frankenstein project.

I soo wish the om617 turbo and om606 came to southafrica.. I had a 300D w123 for many years till it rusted away .. i took that engine and retrofitted it to a w126 body 280se and I love it light on diesel and it goes well .. I am not sure if the gear ratio is correct however when I had a quick look the gear and diff ratios from w123 300d vs 280se w126 looks the same.

606 engine has a aluminum cylinder head. I prefer the 617.

If they use the same shims as om601/602, I have a couple comprehensive new Bosch sets in Los Angeles

What about the 603960 from the 124 chassis or the 602 96 from the 201 chassis? Why aren’t these mentioned? Aren’t they good swaps

I don't think they are popular swaps, I am sure they would be good but 617/606 swaps are more popular due to budget constraints and power goals.

W460 300GD was a 617. Non turbo though.

The 603 engines where used by the military in tracks kind of vehicles used in snow .The machine shop next door did rebuild some for a couple of years . They did the complete engine , and test ran them before shipping back . And no MB does not make the best cars in the world . consumer report has them listed at bottom together with fiat , jeeps , Maserati .

Not anymore they don't, they had that reputation back in the 80s and squandered it by the 2000s. Some say they made the w123 too good and had to stop doing that, otherwise they won't sell cars.

You are wrong. 617s were used in G wagons for almost a decade.

In fact, the W460 300GD was the very last vehicle to be fitted with a OM617 engine, all the way up to 1991.

They were too slow for the American market back then.
