Denial of issues and "blame it on the customer" is the German car way. I had the same experience with my first (and last) German car I bought in 1999. My BMW had a serious issue with the drive by wire system and they just continued to blame it on me and say "I wasn't driving it right" or that "I might just not be a BMW person". I agreed with that last one. 😁

There is a time when consumers will choose an alternative no matter how nice or shiny the badge looks. Automakers need to put real efforts into designing electric vehicles from the ground up. It is harder to rebuild trust in brand reliability than it is to maintain an automaker’s image through the production of quality products. Companies have failed when they failed to innovate and change with the times like Kodak, Blockbuster, Circuit City. Apple at one point was close to failure before Steve Jobs returned to the company and simplified the product lineup and concentrated on a few great products. They should hire a business historian who can help them evaluate and learn from other companies mistakes in order to avoid the same and design a truly exciting, quality, compelling product designed from the start as an electric vehicle but with the other components that Mercedes Benz customers like about the brand.

Nobody know how many cars had been sold knowing that airbags had to be switched out during regular maintenance due to built-in gas-generators not functioning properly over the usual time span (Takata - they closed up and demand could not be met so in stock Takata airbags had to be put in to keep the numbers up). And yes, Teslas can have older versions of chassis components built in that can cease to function prematurely and have been subject of a recall leading to partly shoddy waterproofing repairs - AT Zimmermann is still bickering about those). VW still sold cars knowing that timing belt lengthening could occur that could lead to engine damage and led to customers having to fight for fixes/compensation for damages. So... just breathe.

Whilst all media can be a little alarmist, including in China - witness several staged Tesla incidents in the past, I am also aware that auto companies, certainly of German origin can exhibit an attitude of denial. There's nothing wrong with the car, they'll say. But faults do crop up on occasion, and sometimes they are actual design faults. Probably the worst incidence of design fault denial that I can remember is from BMW in South Korea. It was to do with the fuel supply within the engine compartment [yes, this is an ICE vehicle situation, I'm just illustrating the attitude here]. And btw, this is only 3-4 years back - a seal could leak fuel onto the hot exhaust manifold resulting in abrupt fires starting and people having to abandon the vehicle. This became surprisingly common with owners reporting fires, but BMW denied responsibility. It was not until the South Korean govt banned sales of new BMWs that they took the matter seriously, re-called hundreds of thousands of cars and apologised. And that took a long time after the first cases.

I am utterly unsurprised by this current behavior. I lived in a town that formerly had a major Chrysler engine plant and saw how stupidly they handled the Diamler-Chrysler merger. They were convinced that they shit gold and that the Americans running Chrysler knew nothing about any aspect of auto production. The list of mistakes is too long for here but they ended up losing almost the entirety of their investment. Hubris. Pure and simple hubris. I am sure the M-B brand will still exist--they will be like Jeep--but they will probably be part of a GM--like consortium instead of an independent brand.

This is the changing of the guard. It is hard for companies that make ICE engines to turn the ship around. On the other hand it is easy for an electric car company to leap frog them in so far as electric motors are concerned because that is all they sell and that is what they focus on. The issue for me is build and ride quality etc. I still think the traditional car makers build a better car to drive because these companies have been doing it for 100 years. I would stay away from electric during this teething period whether it be from a new company because they don’t have experience in building motor vehicles and the establishment because they don’t know how to fully intergrate their cars with the new technology and they end up with a Frankenstein model.

This is at Old World power structure families that were the big dogs back in World war I and World war ii. Mercedes Volkswagen Porsche, these families enjoyed the power they wielded in control. Remember Elon Musk was on the way to buying Mercedes and then he saw the problems with their automobiles and the problems mainly with the leadership of the company and he just basically walked away as fast as he could. I know porsha was bragging on there have voltage charging about how fast it was but they were at the same time warning customers not to drive them faster than necessary. And a couple of people online which shows like yours we're talking about Mercedes and Porsche and so on having the high power charging system and they did not understand hasn't gone to this the reason Elon Musk isn't going to the higher voltage charging systems because of product is not as safe as far as heating up and catching on fire. And that was the problem that was going on with some of these European cars Hood solely focused on how fast they can get the car charged. Not only does it cause problems with the car that haven't been designed properly for that yet, but in order for these cars to be charged at home the owner would have to hire an electrician and pay an arm and a leg to get a very high voltage commercial level power and charging unit installed in their house which is not cheap. And then you have the insurance companies who after the Chevy bolt fiasco, some insurance companies will drop your home insurance coverage if you install such high power systems in a residential home. Because it is a fire hazard to them. And then you have the insurance companies that will let you install the equipment by license professional and then raise your insurance rates to a level that the majority of people are not willing to pay. Elon Musk on the other hand is doing everything he can to absolutely perfect the most benefit from every so-called gram of stored energy in his battery packs all at the same time you basically can just drive the car into your garage and plug it into a 120 or a 240 outlet and charge plenty fast without all the risk to the car's systems that would have had three to four times that amount of voltage being shoved through the car while charging and I guess in some cases while driving. These high voltage charging systems and circuitry in these cars not only are not up to snuff in their design yet, but they are way more expensive with way more expensive insurance on the car and your home because of all of the potential fire hazard. And companies like Mercedes are too proud and stubborn to admit that they are barking up the wrong tree. That's about the best I can explain it anyway lol.

You're questioning why MB kept selling. One of the answers could be (my estimate): They had to. Because of climate regulations in the EU. With astronomical fines if their sold cars on average should produce to much CO2. In other words...the EU government is responsible for this "historical failure". With stupid regulations you''ll create stupid results ...such as selling a zero emission car being sure you have to recall that car.....because that's cheaper than those CO2 fines. I do not choose any MB as my car. My car is build on a special EV platform (Korea). Nearly same size as any old MB S class for a fraction of the price And even for that fraction of the price (including required high taxes in the Netherlands on ICE) with complete options including AWD.

They weren’t the first. Porsche had a serious issue with either their inverters or the dc/dc converter or the on-board charger in the Taycan. (I can’t remember which for sure) some fires were caused. They managed to suppress the widespread news coverage and spent months continuing to sell the cars with the dangerous design while they tried to redesign the offending part before retrofitting as required. They are all desperate to sell their quota of EVs so they can be allowed to sell some ICE vehicles by proportion under the emissions reduction rules.

Mistake? When a huge corporation makes "huge mistakes" are they really mistakes? Who is pulling the strings of that corporation and who stands to gain from any fuck ups that happen? Mistakes = falling stock prices = massive stock buy-backs. Then suddenly, when the stocks are nearly worthless, the same company suddenly comes out with a game changer, that will thrust them to the top of their game, and their previous worthless stocks are suddenly worth 500% more than they did before the stocks began to fall. The entire bull shit of supply and demand works on this principle, for the reason of price gouging and screwing over the small investor. I think it is wrong, once you invest in a huge company and you panic-sell devalued stocks. Hang onto them. You have already lost the value. Keep it and wait for the "miraculous" rebound. This is especially true with legacy and new legacy-copying industries.

Destroying your brand and expecting to rebound is a terrible idea. This game is way too dangerous for any company to play in the real world. The only realistic strategy is to do the best they can and hope for the best.

@@thisismyname9569 Don't take my word on it. Look to history and how the rich and corporations manipulate the stock markets to make money for themselves.

Buying Chrysler at least was the biggest mistake. Maybe they ignore that because in China are many electric vehicles which just catch fire and burn out. Guess what is worse.
