Active bonnet or active pedestrian protection system works almost the same way on BMW F series. Thanks very much for this video because many mechanics doesn't know this. I hope my comment helps other people to google this video.

To prevent pedestrians "fly" over windshield (and car). Something like silencer of fall.

@@THEJPR it doesn't prevent people hitting the windshield, thats exactly where they will hit with an active bonnet... windshields are flexible and not the worst place to hit, pillars and engine blocks are.

This is the most ridiculous item ever fitted to a car, it doesn’t protect pedestrians, it just tells you that you’ve killed one !!

You can see the improvement in the bonnet near the end with the head test

It absolutely does save lives. It increases the space between the bonnet and engine, so when the pedestrians head hits the bonnet there's more space for it to slow down rather than hitting a solid bonnet and engine.

You haven't got a clue what you're taling about. If the bonnet is down solid then the metal is taut and will absorb and spread the impact less, more force will transfer into whatever hits it. In the final video you can see that with the bonet raised it sits freely above and the bonnet itself can flex all over, absorbing far more impact and spreading that energy out, dissipating it, rather than sending it all back (into the pedestrian etc).
