About 3 min in you get to the 2 backside caps - of which yours was the black one you called "electrolytic," which can (and did) leak. What then, praytell, is the blue one, which is the leaky suspect in MY case (also a 94 E320 with sketchy, lying LCD). Hopefully I can ID the thing if I take it out - and further, hopefully I can FIND a replacement. Had to take the cluster panel out for something else, so might as well juggle this, too.Thanks, BTW, for all your helpful stuff on this old bucket of bolts as only a german engineer could arrange them. Amazingly obtuse thinking evinced at times, but what would _I_ know?Carry on.

Pale Writer Hi! Have you identified the blue capacitor? Mine is leaky as well. It says WIMA 4700 100-U. If you've replaced it, which one have you bought?

my vdo outside temp display is reading 53 deg F at an ambient temperature of 80 deg F . Is this the reason why my AC compressor wont kick off ?

thanks for the video. I tried this and when i connected it in the car, still nothing. but then i tried it out to the speedo, still in the car but just connected. and then it showed -38 degrees for a few seconds after the ignition turned on and then went back to black. but this is not possible to see after I insert it in the speedo. is there anything in the speedo that can be replaced, new glass or maybe just remove it ?

Thanks for another helpful video Why does pin 4 connect to the vehicle speed sensor? Would it be ok, do you think, to remove the temp display to work on it and reassemble and drive the car with the display out.

I believe that the speed sensor is used to compensate the temperature calculation for vehicle speed. It should be fine to drive the car without it.

If it works something like the outside temperature display in a 1993 Dodge Caravan, the VSS information is used to disable temperature updates when the vehicle is stopped (except for when first started), or moving very slowly (in heavy traffic) to avoid erroneous high readings from road surface heat or engine heat. I believe Chrysler holds last value until 30 MPH is reached for new update. Not sure the conditions Mercedes uses, but imagine it is something similar. Great video! Now I can fix the LCD temperature display in my 1993 300E, Thanks!!!!

Up to 08/87, the outside temperature display is supplied direct by the temperature sensor. As of 09/87, the outside temperature display analyzes the road speed signal from the Hall sensor. When the engine is started, the temperature measured is displayed. The memory is activated if, after starting the engine, the vehicle has been driven no faster than 20 km/h. As the temperature drops, the readout always appears immediately no matter the speed. At speeds below approx. 20 km/h the temperature last measured is stored and displayed. If the temperature rises, the stored temperature is displayed in order to avoid any incorrect measurement. This prevents an incorrect temperature being displayed when driving slowly or when the car is stopped and the temperature sensor is heated up e. g. as a result of exhaust gases from the vehicle in front or from heat radiated by the radiator. At speeds between approx. 20-60 km/h the temperature displayed changes after about 5 minutes in line with the temperature measured. The change in the readout is open from approx. 60 km/h.
