With an AMG bodykit and 18 inch wheels as standard, the new C Coupe certainly looks the part but will it be enough to compete with tough rivals from BMW and Audi? To find out, we took the £38,000 300bhp V6 version out for a spin.

Owned a 2009 3series coupe that had more warning lights on the dash than Blackpool illuminations, Hard ride and a auto box that wasnt quiet when put into drive, now own a c 220 and it feels much better inside than the across the entire range dash of the boring beemer, its auto box is faultless and smooth and the whole car feels more solid and smooth, its not noticably slower or sportier and im well pleased i changed from bm to merc

@SuperMeatsause They also use MPG and UK Gallons are larger than US gallons. A car will go farther per UK gallon since it contains more fuel than a US gallon. Also their testing cycle is a bit different. 40 UK MPG is about 31-33 US MPG.

Very nice car, better than Audi A5 and BMW 3 series coupe. I have driven all of them and will order the Merc this month :-) With the AMG package the suspension is very sporty

its not rubbish. its just not moved on a lot in years. (the latest 3 isn't that different to the last 2 decades on the instrumentation) its one of the first thing my GF points out compared to her old beemers when in their showrooms. The C Coupe has a really nice interior. Currently one of the nicest. I think the Lexus IS might be a tad better, but its better than the A5 and the 3 IMO. Its not liked I haven't owned BMW I have, loved it, but not for the interior. The sportiness and speed :)

The runflat tyre USED to give a terrible ride when they were first fitted, circa 2003. Nowadays the suspension is tuned for them and they ride as well as or better than any of their rivals. So that comment is now out of date and has been for some time. However I agree about the image and interior, but the new 3 coupe is just months away now, so a comparison with the new car with its all new interior will be very interesting.

European MPG is based on their loop, which also include the British Imperial gallon (4.546L) not the US Customary Gallon 3.785L. More gas over distance, more MPGs. If this also somehow includes a shorted distance for "mile", 1500m instead of 1609m, still more miles in a gallon. There is a bit more to it, but the US version will not even close to 40MPGs. So don't fret. We didn't get the bad engine, they just fudged their own results.

Good. They are aiming at different people. If you want a Go-kart, get BMW. If you want comfort, luxury and style go for the Merc. 2 totally different cars. The market can have both, its OK - enough cars to go around :)

@SuperMeatsause A gallon in the UK is not the same as the U.S. In the UK, a gallon is 160 fluid ounces versus 128 fluid ounces in the U.S. So you'll get more miles out of a UK gallon than a U.S. gallon. 40mpg UK is equivalent to 33mpg U.S.

my 2006 acura tl does 30 mpg and 0-60 is 5.8 sec, and top speed limited 155 mph..common it should be faster, I know it would definitely be faster around the track but I expected more...but if the 40 mpg is true I guess it's impressive for every day car

s5 is 44 grand in the uk..... bmw 335i is 41 grand and the c class 350 is 38 grand bmw 335i is around 40 grand........ the V8 models were and still are audi rs5 was 54 grand.... bmw m3 was 53 grand the c63 was also 54 grand in the Uk

uhh, dunno mate.. i do like mercs (i own onw) but i don't think this is better than a 335i, for example. i think the 335i will outrun this in both a straight line and on the bends.

Let's see... 40mpg combined... that's 33mpg U.S. Calling total BS on that one. US EPA has it calculated at 23mpg combined and 29mpg highway; that's 27.5 UK mpg and 33.5 UK mpg respectively. And the US EPA's mileage estimates have been pretty accurate since they revised their methodology a few years ago. I think the UK counterpart may need to rethink its calculation methodology as well.

everyone who knows cars knows that the RS5 C63 coupe and the BMW m3 are the V8 class and rivals...... rs5 v8 450 BHP ....bmw M3 v8 440BHP and the c63 V8 451BHP... also black series c63 competes with the bmw m3 GTS they are lighter cars and have increased engine hp

Ok, you are obviously a Merc man... I've owned cars from both manufacturers and I can say that the it depends what one wants. Merc has got luxury, trim and the head turning star on the hood, but BMW's handling and dynamic characteristics are lightyears away. So if you are a conseravtive 45 year old who likes cruising the Merc is tha car for you...

no the m3 and c63 are compared with the RS5........... all 3 cars are V8's and rivals to each other by all 3 car companies......... s5 is compared with the merc c350 and the bmw 335i ....... which are all v 6's and same size engines.......

That's partly true. As you get older, a more comfy ride is nicer. Go read the BMW forums and all the people moaning about 1 series rattles :) Harder ride, harder plastics = BMW rattles. I can't stand rattles. And Mercs go round corners plenty fast enough for me, we aren't race drivers. All these journos talking about race style credentials are laughable on UK roads (cr*p) and coppers and cameras and traffic everywhere. But if you wanna rattle your fillings out, go right ahead and get a Beemer :)

This coupe is much better looking than the 3 series. Ride is much better. (BMW= harsh, terrible run flat tyres) Much better interior, proper luxury unlike the utilitarian (hasnt changed for a decade) beemer. You're either a BMW person, or a Merc person. BMW for chavs and sales reps, Merc for people with class :) Simplez.

the audi is 15 grand more then the c350 and 5 grand less then the c63. its competing with the c63 for sales not the c350.the rs5 is competing with the s5 and and the m3. nothing competes with a black series
