I agree that it doesn't make sense to compare these two in terms of performance, as the Panamera S/GTS matches up better with the CLS 550 (and the Panamera Turbo and Turbo S match with the CLS63 and CLS63S), but I think what they were going for was an even comparison with respect to price. They both start in the neighborhood of $110,000, but even then, the $116k GTS is a good bit more than the $106k CLS63, and that's before getting into the ridiculous options prices for which Porsche is famous...

Stop with the Porsche Panamera Turbo BS. The price gap between the CLS 63 to the Panamera Turbo you can buy one A Class, the price gap between the Turbo S and the CLS and you can buy a CLA 45AMG and have £10.000 to spend on gas.

Why the GTS and not the Turbo? That would have been more comparable; both cars having twin turbo V8's, and similar HP and Tq numbers. It doesn't make sense. Did you guys not have access to one?

Latarsha Berdin Actually, no, not really. Its very close, in fact. Maybe that's what you meant, but I doubt it. Putting aside the inevitably conservative manufacturers' ratings, note that Car & Driver got 0-60 sprints as low as 3.6 seconds for both the Panamera Turbo S and the Mercedes CLS63 AMG S, and Motor Trend got 3.4 out of both for the same. Additionally, the Merc sports a top speed of 186 mph and the Porsche 192. So both are about the same in terms of straight-line speed. However, the Porsche is clearly a better driver's car, as Motor Trend was about to extract 1.03g of lateral grip out of the Panamera, compared to 0.97g in the CLS. This was demonstrated clearly enough by the fact that the Porsche posted a lap time of 1:22.68 on the Streets of Willow, whereas the Mercedes took 1:24.71; for comparison, note that the Ferrari 458 Italia posted a 1:22.30. I think the lap time disparity is probably due in large part to the Porsche's more advanced AWD system (borrowed from Audi and upgraded to handle the torque) and its huge carbon ceramic brakes. This is made even more impressive by the fact that the Porsche has to haul around an extra 173 lbs. of curb weight!

It is quite hideous, yes, but not only does the Maserati rock cheap-ish hard-plasticy switchgear pulled from the Chrysler-Fiat corporate parts bin, but the trim and leather isn't up to snuff for anything wearing the trident badge, and the transmission is reportedly rather clunky when the throttle isn't wide open. Most importantly, the Quattroporte lacks the biggest selling point for most Maseratis: the high-revving, Ferrari-built, flat-plane crankshaft V8. These are just a few of the many reasons why the Quattorporte is cheaper. Its exciting, yes, but lacks the refinement, build quality, and motorsport pedigree of the Porsche

And chances are that if they can buy a GTS, more than likely they'll afford a Turbo as well. It all boils down to what the rich want.

nforspeed91 they compare zr1s to Ferraris all the time around the track, and even though the Ferrari cost 3 times as much, the vette always rwins.. obviously a panamera with 424 hp vs the benzes 548 is going to be slower. the turbo would have been a more compelling test.

Maybe in the past when the CLS was rear wheel drive. Now that the CLS 63 AMG S model is here with more power, you're quite wrong. The Audi will lose because it's slower, heavier, and less powerful. I will admit it could either way with the Porsche because it's only less power and weighs less, but it has a torque disadvantage.
