Nice video on diesel fuel injectors, treating the Black Death !!
@russ77434 жыл бұрын
Hi I have been down this road with mercs. You need to check the neck on the injector tip you will find that the injector nozzle has narrowed about half way up. this is what happens due to the heat in the combustion chamber getting on the tip. this results in the injector needle valve sticking during operation. that then results in overfueling and a Low return flow. The overfueling is what causes the black death as the compresion forces the unburnt fuel past the copper washer. Changing the washer is a short term fix. The bosch series injectors have about 120K life before needing a refurb. Pays to have them tested costs about 40 bucks each injector. and about 150 bucks for a rebuild each injector. You should also use a mercedes reseating tool on the washer seat in the block and it pays to lift and lightly tap the injector ddown a few times to bend the washer into the injector as they are not machined really well. And yes that's probably the worst hydrocarbon sludge to get on your skin wear gloves dude!

Thank you. Great feedback. I appreciate your expertise. For now, the short term fix will have to do. Car is old. Out of curiosity, if an injector is rebuilt, does it need to be recoded into the car? I do not have access to that ability. Might think about rebuilding injectors if I could avoid having to take somewhere to be recoded to engine.

@@pfoxhound the washer is not flat. You don’t want to have gap between injector and washer as you see in this video.

The torque down should flatten them out to seat properly but I always went for that 2nd 90 degree turn that WIS calls for. Possibility of shearing a bolt will cause extreme anxiety so I understand not wanting to push your luck but I think black death will return quicker w/o 2nd 90. Those stretch bolts are holding against up to 16 bar (25k PSI) of pressure at times.
@card.ologist45704 жыл бұрын
Wow. I did not think of this at all. I probably did this on several of them. I may adjust today in a video alert. If I do, I will credit you, Mirarty. Thank you (I think) for pointing out my error -- now I can work for about 2 more hours for the purpose of checking the position of 6 washers. I did notice that the bracket holding down the injector does not really force them down into the hole, just kind of keeps them in place.

Lastly, Honda makes a superior diesel copper washer #16472-RBD-E00. Not cheap---have to order from Japan, but a better seal from all indicators.

Can you do injector leak test, and rebuild? By this milage they should be ready for reconditioning or replacement (expensive)...
@russ77434 жыл бұрын
pfoxhound Do not attempt to rebuild an injector yourself its a specialist item needing very complex testing equipment. These injectors are not like the old ones that you could strip and wirebrush. they need delivery and flow testing and the attack and decay profile on the electrical impulse triggers for correct fuel timing.

@@russ7743 look at mbdieselfreak, he was resurfacing the nozzle and body of injector. Just need to be careful. At 300k miles these injectors leak too much. 350$ per injector is too much for this kind of car...
@russ77434 жыл бұрын
@@pfoxhound I agree that it can be done you can buy the new nozzles etc from bosch the kits are about100 bucks. Im doing a comparison as i am in europe France on pricing. The injector body forms part of the set up of the delivery of fuel as soon as you move anything it needs set up and you need a test rig for it if you get the fuel volumes wrong you can under fuel or overfuel or have an increased return to the tank and your MPG goes out or worse you can pop a hole in a pot. the injectors themselves are pretty bomb proof its the tips and the needles that burn as in my comment back to cardiologist, thats what causes black death. had 4 mercs that did it and i have a S211 now which has a tick on number 2 cylinder so here we go again. 350 bucks sounds like a new injector surely there must be somewhere that will rebuild them and put the service kit in. Best thing to do is get a spare set from a breaker, refurb them over a period and then swap them out every 120K. saves a big spend in one go. look these guys up they ship all over the world always had great parts from them .www.prestigeallparts.co.uk/:)
@card.ologist45704 жыл бұрын
I'm sure that injectors 2 and 3 (the ones with the significant black death) need rebuild. Right now, will go for the cheap fix of resealing - for as long as the car runs well and black death does not return. Eventual rebuild is inevitable, but very pricey on these cars. The 6 injectors if purchased new would be equal to the current value of the car.

Great video(s) dr. I have the same car in '05 model, Parents were the original owners w/80k miles they gave me the car a few years back with black death real bad. While tightening the hold down bolt it snapped about 3/4 way down that hole. That was after I stripped the threads and used a beautiful steel insert from time-sert. Things went downhill from there so I stopped any more DIY and found an experienced mechanic. Bought a new cylinder head, valve cover, gaskets, intake manifold, etc., etc. Car went to the shop around April/May, got it back a week ago but had to return to the shop to sort out a few electrical issues before the rebuild is mostly complete.

Before starting it would’ve helped to turn the ignition on and off 3 times (not starting the car) to pressurize the fuel system, then it would have started on the first attempt. Just a tip. Otherwise a great job and an excellent video. New sub here.

Copper washers were installed incorrectly. Flat side of the washer must be at injector tip and rounded at the injector seat. You may have soon again injectors leaking.

Ja aber die Elektronik. Da sitzt man und wartet dass es irgendwo bums macht. I belive that this car needs to live in a garage to protect the over engineered electronic. I wouldn't park it outdoor full time. The car is a minefield of electronic components placed throughout its chassis but miraculously the troubles are few. We do repairs with great care and respect. But bear in mind: Be ready to walk away from it. it is only a car.
