The real reason my CDI Turbo Diesel Mercedes was and still is the cheapest in the country is because of a horrible engine problem. If left untreated this issue could cause catastrophic damage to my engine and render my car worthless. Don't buy a diesel car or truck without watching this video and inspecting for Black Death!!

The cost at the dealer is minimum $1,200 USD. I know because I did it once. Since then, I invested less than $100 and have all the tools to do it myself. Something else, if you don't have "black death" keep the injector lubed. The injector body is steel and the cylinder head is aluminum - two different metals with different heat and corrosion properties.

This happened to my 2003 sprinter van. The Mercedes dealer told me the problem was caused by bad injectors and I would have to replace all of them. Luckily I knew they were lying . I went to the parts counter , ordered the injector seals and bought some oven cleaner on the way home. I was done by that evening. That 150000 miles ago and @315k my original injectors are still going strong. .

In my case the Mercedes dealer lied to my face in order to steal money from me. Luckily I knew it was only the $5 seal. It is a known problem, Mercedes should have informed me to have it checked. The only thing I'd add to this is; while the injectors are out and since they have a lot of miles on them, take them to a _legitimate Mercedes authorized diesel shop_ (usually one that also works on Frieghtliner trucks) and get the injectors cleaned and calibrated.

Excellent video! Many years ago (1984), I bought a 1965 MB 190D (Heckflosse--Fintail, or Swallowtail) for $600 that had been sitting in a carport behind an old house for years. After towing it home, I was cleaning it when I pulled a threaded rod protruding from the instrument panel (I had put a battery into it to check out the lights and such) and it fired up! I knew nothing about diesels! But I bought a Clymer manual and started doing repairs and maintenance on it. I was actually able to order parts for it from our local Pontiac/Mercedes-Benz dealer (!) A year later, I sold it for $1500 to a guy who just had to have it! I regret selling it to this day, but that money was most of the down payment on our first house... so it was for a good cause! Keep on wrenching, and Merry Christmas!

I'm a mechanic and did 14 years in a euro shop.. We had one like the one in the photos. We didn't have the puller so we got the local merc dealership to do it. They snapped off one of the F$%^#@@ long thin retaining bolts and couldn't get the injector out with the correct puller, so the head had to come off, The injector got damaged. SO. . . My boss had a (LOUD) chat with them and they supplied a head set, bolts at cost, a second hand head that came with the injectors which they pulled out of the head for free. (The bottom of the injector hole was too badly eroded to machine up.) We then put it together and the job was done.

Alex U are Awesome. I have 30 years of aircraft mechanic experience and pretty much fix everything around me all my life. I also own an 05 CDI , love this car. Absolutely love your videos, If I knew you in person I think we would be good friends , I think this just by seeing how you work, very meticulous. I think the same way and tell people all the time , it's easy just do it. But I have learned over the years not everyone has it . I have seen some struggle installing a bulb. KEEP UP the great work and as always Merry Christmas..😁😁

Always love the folks that don't understand that some lightbulbs can't get finger prints on them or they don't last as long. Sure you can be less clean, but bigger issues long term. Some people get it, some don't. Might be that whole delayed gratification thing!

Many thanks for the black death video, extremely helpful. Have you ever had trouble with the transmission not kicking down both in normal driving and in cruise control. Mine stopped kicking down gears about the same time the black death started so I wondered if it was somehow related through the computer.

A few years ago I had this done on a 5 cylinder Alfa Romeo diesel and a friend who worked at a Mercedes/Alfa dealer did it for me and had me pour Coke over the injectors the night before to dissolve the carbon, I thought he was winding me up but the engine cleaned up easily and all the injectors popped right out!

Coke is literally just sugar, artificial food colouring and phosphoric acid, its rust/gunk dissolving properties are well known. Just make sure to rinse it off with water afterwards so you don't get a sticky sugary residue.

@furiousdriving. You can also use coke for the coolant system. Uninstall the thermostate to gain flow and fill up with pure coke. Also put your heater on. Drive about 50 km's and let it stay in overnight. The next day you can rinse the system.

I'm glad you made this video as long as it was, if you had tried to shorten it there would definitely have been some crucial information lost. It would have been like listening to the guy at work who's been doing a particular job for 20 years, so he leaves out needed steps because " well, that's the way it's done, anyone can see that", unless you've never done it before.

I would like to give you a little tip when using a slide hammer to pull a stubborn part. It really helps to have some tension on the shaft of the slide hammer to reduce the bounce effect. The movement seen during your use of the tool shows that you are loosing force that is wasted instead of actually been transferred to the injector. We have modified ours with a ring on the top so we can apply the upward force with a hoist to preload the tool. This reduces the bounce effect and allows for all of the force to actually be applied to the injector from the slide hammer. The hoist does not have to be elaborate or expensive a small block and tackle works well because if you pull on it to tension the ropes the weight of the car will act as a preload. .

Wow, I am so glad I stumbled on your video tonight. I plan on seeing 3 different Winnebago RVs tomorrow, with 5 & 6 cyl diesel engines. They are from 2006-2008, so I'm sure the black death problem is something I should be looking for. I'll give a keen listen for the tell-tale puffing while the engine is running. You may have saved me some big bucks! I'm a DIY guy, so tackling that job will be somewhat a fun challenge, in case I ever need to do the repair. Made easy after watching this video....THANKS!

One crucial thing when using the cutting tools. Pack the cutting end with grease to hold the shavings so they do not drop into the cylinder. The last thing you want after doing a job like this is aluminum shavings chewing up your piston rings and cylinder walls.

What is to keep any shavings from entering the cylinder when reaming for a new seat? Also what keeps any of the wire bristles from entering the cylinder when using the wire brushes? I am not a mech. but feel this is an honest question, these tools would work perfect if the head is removed but with it still on the block leaves a risk in my opinion. I know when trying to install a Heli-Coil on gas engines the reamer/threader is coated in grease to TRY to prevent anything from entering the cylinder and if using a ream to try to remove carbon build up around where a glow plug would be used in a diesel engine they coat the reamer with grease in order to try and capture any carbon from falling into the cylinder. ,

Good video but safety is first! Vacuum air cools the compond motor and sparking brushes. Carb / brake cleaners can be flammable if the right air/cleaner ratio is obtained. And never run a diesel engine with the fuel injector mounting bolt removed! And you had your body over it? You know the extreme pressures that a diesel engine produces? And the pressure that the fuel rail are at? You got very lucky this time! You could loose your eyes and or your life! Please show some respect and concern for people who are learning from your videos. Us old timers have seen a thing or two with hotshot young mechanics who lost eyes, fingers and other body parts because they cut too many corners on safety!

I would cringe using wire brushes, especially were there’s a potential of some wires coming loose and going inside the cylinder. I would have just used strong solvents and strong rags, picks, small screw drivers. There a very good solvent called Berryman chem-dip ...

Wire brushes always lose wires, I thought a “Kit” would have included an expanding mandrel to seal the nozzle hole, you could then carry on with whatever methods of cleaning you like, blow the carp out of the injector holes and have a lovely clean head to refit your injectors into.
