Now that’s the smartest thing I’ve seen on a hybrid car. The charging door or flap is at the back. A lot of advantages there inc the battery harness is what 2 metres to the battery as a pose to 5-6 on other cars that have the point at the front. There’s nothing worse then seeing the door at the front or on the mudguard which is the worse place to put it and if you have an accident then it’s the front of the car or front mudguards that gets hit, and I would imagine more expensive and the risk of the battery wiring harness shorting out and causing issues after the repair that isn’t picked up initially is right on the cards to do so I would suggest. Well done MB on being clever and thinking outside the box.

Thanks again Nick. Very interesting to hear about the hybrid version of the E-Class. Excellent presentation as always. Well prepared. In Belgium hybrids are mainly bought to avoid taxes, mainly by business people. But the cars are rarely used in electric mode because it is not very convenient to have them always charged. In general the mean distances travelled are much longer than the electrical range of the car so the ambient benefits are rather limited. The main reason car manufacturers are producing hybrid cars is to reduce the overall CO2 exhaust of their fleet to avoid or minimise fines.
@npoleary3 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah the same happens here but I hope that people soon understand that it is genuinely cheaper to run on electric than fuel! The number of charge points increase here in the UK by about 800 a month! And that’s only going to get better as time goes on!

I found a very good article here: www.carsloth.com/advice/ev-charger-extension-cables So defo worth a read! And I may make one on this topic next year. Hey bisho, no worries! Glad you found it useful! The whole goal of a plug-in hybrid is to use an alternative to fuel, to convert some of your driving away from petrol / diesel. Some older plug-in hybrids do offer charging on the go but I wouldn’t recommend it as it’ll eat into your MPG massively.

Informative, but none of these video's tells you what to expect for full range with a full charge and full tank. Type it in a search engine too, never comes up with the combined range. How long does the battery charge last on a motorway drive when combined with the engine? Is it still only 30 miles, or is there still charge after 100 miles?
@npoleary Жыл бұрын
Hey Bill, it depends on what speed you do. If you travel between 40mph and 60mph at 23°C with the A/C off then you’ll most likely exceed the car’s electric range. Most Plug-in hybrids will use up their electric first and then when it’s done, it’ll switch over to the engine with usually 5% to 10% remaining until you plug it back in again.
@billbonnington7916 Жыл бұрын
@@npoleary my long journeys will be motorway, so 60 to 85 mph (including autobahn), and I doubt the A/C will ever be off. The web is saying 55mpg but I don't believe that can be on the engine alone, I guess I will have to wait until 1st July when I have the car and can check it! Should I come back and post some real mileage data?
@npoleary Жыл бұрын
You can do! 🤓 There’s so many variables though as each car weighs slightly differently and of course the weather on the day can affect it too (and driving style, traffic etc)
@billbonnington7916 Жыл бұрын
@@npoleary So, after 6 months or so of real world driving, here goes! In the summer, a full charge will give me 50kms / 30 miles or so, and on a long drive (motorways) I will get around 600 kms plus the battery range, plus around 50kms of recharge from coasting downhill / braking etc. In the autumn the electric range has dropped significantly, down from 50 to 30kms with all the extra electrically powered stuff on the de-mist and seat warmers etc. The cable is getting a bit tiresome as this sometimes means a power charge twice a day, and the cable is quite tricky to roll, gets covered in grit and wet from the road, and often activates the quite useless hands free tailgate option closing the gate on my head - and it almost never works when I have two shopping bags in my hand... Other than that, fab motor. Auto box a bit slow in tight maneuvering, but quick on full power and more than adequate around town on electric only, and the battery bulge in the boot has not proven problematic at all.

Hey lychvy, yes it did change some time ago so don’t worry not a fault! Most models had changed from what I’d seen and I have a funny feeling it might have been to do with feedback with lighting right around the instrument cluster but not entirely sure.

@npoleary6 ай бұрын
Some older plug-in hybrids do have a “charge” mode but it is not something you will ever want to do. Newer ones have that feature removed because of the below. The reason is, is because a plug-in hybrid is designed to be plugged in (hence the name). The whole concept is to source a different place (other than fuel) to power the car. Costings per mile to run a car, fuel, we all know how much that costs. But when you run on electricity charged from the mains it can often be up to a 1/2 or even 1/3 cheaper than running on fuel per mile. So the idea being is NOT to use fuel to charge it up otherwise it defeats the point, you may as well just buy a petrol or diesel. That aside, even newer do charge up as you brake, it’s a really small amount but you will need to plug it in somewhere to charge it up to actually drive on electricity to make it worth while. Hope that helps!

I am seriously considering a new E class petrol plug in hybrid, a few things are putting me off the car. It is classed as an executive saloon, yet the seats are what you would expect in a sports car, both the base and seat backrest have large quite rigid bolsters, the backrest bolsters make it too narrow for my broad shoulders and back. Is their a comfort seat option? I would contact MB UK myself, sadly this is impossible as they never answer the Customer Services telephone, I tried over 40 times! and my local dealer cannot answer the question. Also why is there not a petrol plug in hybrid estate car, it is available in some mainland European countries, in the UK we only have the diesel version.
@npoleary3 жыл бұрын
Hey Robin, sadly the seat options are just black leather, neva grey/magma grey, nut brown/black & macchiato beige/black. I’ve noticed it before that the side bolsters do protrude away from the seat more than some others but the seats are still extremely comfortable. Having driven them extensively I can confirm they have an extremely comfortable ride. Have you tried them / taken one for a test drive? If you haven’t you ought to, even if it’s just a petrol/diesel just to try it out for the seat style. Also I’m not sure why the diesel plug-in is the only one available but it is quite common for certain markets to have different specs / engines available etc. It could be something to do with the number of cars available for offering in the E-Class line up or even availability at the moment of integrating the petrol system with the plug-in hybrid. Most models receive updates as time goes on so it could change in the future! 🤞🏼

Hey JRS1000R, Potentially! However each model has a product cycle (life cycle until a new one launches) of about 6-7 years. The GLE only had an update in 2019 so is still pretty new. However historically there’s a facelift usually 4-5 years in so there might be something 2023 to 2024 👀

Hi Nick, Great video again 👍 I have one question, why Mercedes stopped delivering Spiral Cable ? I can see that straight cable gets easily dirty when charging outside, also it won’t go to compact size in the trunk like spiral cable. Was it only because spiral cable costs some more cents ? My friend got his A250e -21 and was amazed how I have on my A250e -20 spriral cable which is so much more convient to use. Is Mercedes offering spiral cable as an extra option or accessory ? Here are the spiral cables which I got, took a video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4CXfKWaiKh2ndk
@npoleary3 жыл бұрын
Honestly Tonde, I’m not 100% sure. I believe the non-spiral cable charges at a faster rate to make it more compatible for cars that support it. So models like the new EQC’s & EQA’s can make use of the 11kW charging if plugged into the right socket. I think that’s why 🤓
