I can't believe head bolts on the earlier production m156 engines wasn't mentioned. The heads would break off the bolts due to a poor design, causing coolant to mix into the oil. The bolts were updated partway through the m156 production run which solved that problem. Also intake manifold mounting bolts were updated as the original ones frequently caused vacuum leaks.
@zsbalak2 жыл бұрын
Not at all, there is only a few batch from the head bolts which are problematic. The contruction before the update was not perfect, but only few batch had corrosion issues too.

Great video covering all the common stuff. Regarding the spark plugs, the service manual calls for a 60k change. I did mine at 60k and they didn't look bad at all. Probably could have waited until 70k like they suggest. Doing frequent oil changes as they suggested helped the wear on my cams. They looked really good at 70k. I did replace all the lifters while changing out the 63 motorsport cam plates. No more lifter chatter... Car idles much quieter now. Of the 32 lifters, only 5 of mine still had working spring pressure.

2010 E63 - M156: car has 68k miles and runs great but I told my mechanic I wanted to be proactive. He took off valve covers and inspection shows some cam wear and a bit of pitting. I am replacing cams with billet cams, lifters with the SLS upgraded ones, the phaser plates on the cam adjusters with a harder alloy (rather than replace entire adjuster), and, of course, new headbolts. Let me add that I bought car in 2014 with about 34k miles. I have been very proactive about maintenance, maybe obsessive. I put on about 3300 miles per year and have it serviced every year, including oil change and additive.

Kyle is a great video host for this channel, does a damn good job presenting all this info. For this particular video only gripes are zero mention of the head bolt issue and the background music was a tiny bit too loud and distracting.

I’m in my second year of owning a 2012 c63 coupe. I got it at 58,000 miles. It’s now just at 70,000. Everything seems to wearing out. I had installed new throttle bodies $2500! Now, the valve cover gaskets are leaking. I put new fuel injectors and had the valve covers fixed $2000. The parts are relatively inexpensive but is the labor the kills you.

This engine is very hard on engine oil, though almost no one talks about it on youtube. Engine oil temp runs continuously 110-115 °C on the highway, and can reach 140°C very quickly on a spirited drive/hillclimb, especially on facelift models, due to lack of air cooling. People who use these hard are complaining especially on hot climate regions. What do you recommend for these regions? A lower temp oil thermostat? Thicker oil maybe, like 5w50 or 10w60?
@danieljunior7821Ай бұрын

@Fcp Euro I am a new sub, to your YT channel, however I've been buying parts for my 2013 C63 for more than 4 years. At the video timemark @2:47 I am glad in a way that it is not just my build that was suseptiable to that oil weeping/leaking from the bed plate. My question is WTF. While under warranty they Mercedes Dealer said it was the lower front oil pan so they removed it and put lots of sealant on it. How every it was not until a few months ago that my independent mechanic found out that it was leaking from the bed plate and gave me two options to fix it. One reseal the outside of the bed plate or pull the motor out of the engine. I went with the reseal because it will take $7,500 to $9,000 to pull the motor put on an engine stand and flip the motor remove and replace all the bolts as they are one time use. So far so good on the reseal I will see what I will do in the future. Side note since Mercedes has official unveiled the new 2023/24 C63S E Performance 4 cylinder, my 6.2 Liter N/A V8 will probably go up in Value😄😄😄
@silversleeper484 Жыл бұрын
I forgot to add my car is a 2013 C63, why has Mercedes never changed the formula of the sealant or change the way the robot put down the sealant bead on the bed plate? I believe that the Factory can actually trace the cars that have weeping/leaking bed plates, by builder or by month date year the motor was built. I am sure an argument can be made that Mercedes was well aware of this issue, but failed to address it.

Classic example of an engine that is brilliant and terrible at the same time. Brilliant to drive and listen to, terrible to own. Just like the BMW S85. At least the Germans are consistent.
