One big thing about vws in europe is not base model but top end cars,trim level increases the price where it makes passat 2.0tdi more expensive than an e 300 with full trim so merc it is for me

Thanks for a nice comparison Nick, I've been in the same situation myself, having to choose between EQE and ID.7, the choice went to ID.7 as I thought it was a bit nicer and I'm not a big fan of frameless doors in the EQE, Tesla etc. the reason for the small cluster screen in the ID.7 is it has a head-up display as standard. in addition, in my country the ID.7 also has a heat pump as standard :-)

Having owned a number of Mercs in the past, I personally hate the plastic interiors of the new EQ range. The iD7 Tourer is my choice all day long. Plus in the flesh the iD7 Tourer looks stunning....

Great comparison. Have had my eqe350 amg line prem plus for a few months. Honestly the car is nothing short of phenomenal. Tech and luxury is a great balance. Driving aids like the 4 wheel steering and the air suspension are fantastic. Price not so good but definitely would recommend. My only gripes is it’s so overwhelming when you first get and this was my first EV, however easy transition to electric with charging etc. the other gripe is I should have went for the amg 53 for additional £15k. But the car looks the same, just no where near as fast. VW do produce great cars but the additional cost you will see on a near base spec eqe as shown in this video. But I am sure the VW will still be an impressive car. What I like is you do not see eqe’s or Eqs’s very much on the road. I’ve seen a half dozen on the road. This will be due to price. But in the uk EV depreciation within 12 months is between 30-40% so deals to be had.

Yes, I have seen incredible deals in Belgium on second hand EQ350+ with 5 years warranty and 10 years for the bbattery while the warranty is only 2 years in France. The hard times for manufacturers and retailers are great for the wyse customer who is not afraid to buy a used car.

@@melvinthemechanic Im sure you have such a grounded opinion on Merc's interiors... Its far from a masterpiece but they are quite easily in the top of premium manufacturers. Its not just materials that matters but overall insulation, ergonomy, seating position... Even stuff like the standard AC efficacy is important and Merc has always placed so much attention onto little things like this. Coupled to their chassis tunning and ride quality, theres very few places that can offer a smoother and more pleasant sensation than a Merc interior. Japs in contrast always place so much attention to gaps and stitches and ornaments yet constantly fail at making the suspension deal with the cars weight, or at dampening road noises, etc...

The VW ID7 has heads up display as standard. The blue piping on the seats you had are the fully ventilated option seats. The normal seats are not ventilated but have a massage function as standard.

Rear heated seat should standard keep the kids warm too,also roller blind on sunroofs is much better than solar bay type sunroofs which doesn't block out the sun fully,eqe instrument cluster was amazing when you put your foot down rev meter went flying so much fun when you actually see something happening rather than a dull little screen

Great video. I'd definitely choose the VW. Wins on price, range and looks. Sure, you can get an EQE with upgraded motors, sportier looks, etc, but this would just make the price difference even greater, and substantially so.

Merc customer will stick with the EQE, but against ID7 it just makes no financial sense! VW for me… and that’s before the LR/86 version and Tourer comes into play.

A fully loaded ID.7 GTX is €59k in Sweden same as base spec RWD EQE and also its Mercedes so you need to add at least 15k in option to just have decent spec one.

I was fortunate enough to have an EQE last month as a courtesy car whilst my AMG was in for a service. My abiding memory of the EQE was the absolute complexity of the left hand screen and the annoyance of the steering wheel buttons. I wasn’t fussed about range and I just felt I was driving a big car with two iPads on it and a very nice Head Up Display. Other than that it was stunningly boring. It might as well have been a Ford Granada (ask your Dad Nick) for its total lack of driving dynamics. Great review, but I’m not giving my hard earned for either model…

Do you live in Germany ? if it is elsewhere, how can you still enjoy a sport car ? too many speed traps everywhere definitely ruin your driving experience ! In France, even a MB e350cdi (diesel) is too powerful and too fast for the speed limits... I love V8 but, in order to keep my driver license and to avoid taxes, I'm going to buy a EQE and let it drive with the Distronic+.

A big plus for the VW instrument cluster is that you have a head up display as a standard, you don’t need to shift your view to the quite small display, there’s everything on the windscreen right in the drivers view. Guess, one need to order it as an extra with Mercedes but still you would have that clunky display in you view. Cheers

On a different subject I have the same car as you and I am always coming across average speed cameras and reduced road working stretches which are picked up by the live nav downloads. I up to now have to fire up the limiter and set the speed. I just found out if I press the resume button twice quickly it sets the speed at the road works speed automatically. You learn something new every week on this car.

Nice review. For what it's worth, once used to them I think the touch haptic buttons work very well (I drive an ID.3) - but I know they divide opinion. I think VW will be pleased you are comparing the ID7 to a more expensive competitor rather than to the (much smaller) Tesla Model 3 as seems so common. I hope the big boot ID7 and the Tourer option can provide a very practical alternative to SUV bodystyles, which so far has been lacking in the EV market.

Was this filmed before VW debuts the ID. 7 GTX? I would consider the AWD ID. 7 over the EQE personally. We would all like more standard features but the optional heat pump on the ID. 7 is not a deal breaker for me. In a way, I prefer it. Let me explain. Heat pump may improve winter efficiency to some degree but the ID. 7 is already more efficient than the EQE. The few miles that I can get from the heat pump is not going to make much of a difference when the range is already more than what I need. So, I can choose not to pay for something I don't need. Let's face it, you are paying for it even if it's a standard feature. It's just built-in to the price. Great job, Nick. Looking forward to your next video. :)

Volkswagens miniature display is a dealbreaker for me!!!!! Also the seats in the firm are definitely negative. Mercedes integrated display and highly effective software, or huge benefits I felt you were a little soft and apostle criticism of Volkswagens. I understand you have to have a working relationship with them, but it slightly hurts your credibility. As a fairly new EQE SUV owner there is so much to learn that I continually go back to your videos! Thank you so much! Not only are they highly informative, but the production quality is magnificent compared to anyone else! You have a bright future ahead of you!

And thank you for your kind comments 😊 So I actually found out after I made the video Volkswagen (in the UK) have an augmented head up display as standard which I’m kicking myself for missing. I naturally assumed it was an option, so this is in addition to the small screen, some people may prefer that. To get the head up display in a Mercedes is thousands more. And the reasons for the soft criticism is because genuinely it’s a great car! In comparison with what you get for the money when compared to the EQE it’s crazy! For the seats, when I say firmer I mean it’s a fraction of a difference. If you jumped into the Volkswagen, you’d probably comment that the seats are soft and supportive. I only commented on that because I got in them back to back. And even then it’s barely noticeable. But glad you enjoyed the videos! It was very tricky to get those two next to each other. Had to pay for parking for both 😅

The Mercedes definitely wins in the interior department and screen space. The VW is definitely the value proposition here and the MEB has been refined from the first batch of ID.3 and ID.4 so it definitely wins in efficiency and range too, though the EQE is also quite long legged but you can tell the EVA platform is still a gen 1 design. In base configuration the ID.7 is a better buy than the EQE 300. However once you step up to the ID.7 GTX vs. the EQE 500 4matic the performance shifts to the Mercedes, and VW has no answer to the blisteringly quick (and expensive) EQE 53 AMG.

I do hope do it one day, but “living with an ev” and the various multimedia systems would be difficult to contain into a couple of minutes. I have been driving EQE 300 since March 2023, my first Mercedes-Benz, and it’s the best car l have ever had. I love the rounded slick wind tunnel design on the exterior and the amazing interior design. I don’t care that much about acceleration so it’s the comfortable driving experience l enjoy and every time l enter the car l feel hugged. I don’t see any reason to change it for another model or brand and will probably keep it for the next 15 years…. BTW I visited the factory in Bremen where my car was born and it was such a wild experience l can recommend. Do you have any information on the idea behind the 300 - vs the 350 other then just price and acceleration?

Hi, I have EQE 300 since April 2023, the only problem with it is floaty driving over 130 Km/h . I supposed it is because of wheel alignment or balance and after one month ( I bought new car) took it to Mercedes Benz work shop and they said everything is look like good. Another problem is driving on ice road. Because it is not 4 matic and just back differential is unstable on icy road. In sweden we 10 months winter 😂. Not stable over winter and floaty driving over 130 km/h.

Sadly not tried it on ice but I’d imagine with summer types and rear wheel drive, that’s not the best combo, Wonder if they’ll bring out a 4MATIC version in the future? (Non AMG)

Nobody's cross shopping between a VW and a Mercedes. But the comparison does show you what you get for the money. Even if the VW was all gussied up to be like the Mercedes, it would still be cheaper. Thing is (as VW learned in the past), people that car shop at the Mercedes level don't really consider price difference. The primary reason why people buy luxury cars -- to have something above the rank and file.

Really interesting review, thanks Nick. I'm running a Mercedes A250e saloon at the moment - it's been a huge disappointment and put me off the brand, mainly due to its poor drive and build quality. Just ordered an ID7 to replace it so it's been great to see your review. I couldn't stretch to the EQE but wouldn't want the merc anyway based on previous experience. Chose the ID7 over BMW I4, Polestar 2, Tesla Model 3 and Audi Q4 E-tron. Space was the big driver, but the VW was at least as refined as any of them and loaded with kit - even if it is a wee bit bland to look at!

Thank you! Mercedes (like most brands) offer quite a few models…A-Class is their entry level one which is Premium but will not carry the luxury that for example a C-Class offers. But if you venture up their range it gets even better. It depends what you’re after in terms of quality on the inside. One of my main reasons for covering other brands is to give my viewers a choice, Mercedes have lovely cars but with EV’s coming, some may prefer to switch to an EV but can’t quite stretch to the price like on an EQE (I fall into this category 😅). So covering multiple makes and models allows people to enjoy my videos even if they move brands. Keep an eye out though I have some Volkswagen Tips and Tricks planned in the coming months! 😎

@@npoleary I agree. I've owned a previous C class and now have an E class and they are both high quality cars. I am always reminded of this when I take my car in for service and get an A class as a courtesy car. You really know that this is the entry level car. Having said that, even the C and E class are built to a budget and you do see this in some of the interior build quality. However I always feel that with Merc. the real money is spent on the bits you can't see. My previous C class did 180K utterly reliable miles and my current E class has done nearly 80K miles without a hitch. The anti-rust warranty on a Merc is 30 years. On a BMW, Audi or VW it's only 12.

Thanks, thoughtful video, one thing never mentioned much is the availability of dealerships and after sales service. I have an ID5 I have 4 dealerships is easy reach. That’s the main reason for the VW over the Tesla I was considering.

Thanks for the video. In the ID you mention several things as new. I am driving a Passat GTE )(7 years old) and it has many of the features as well. I wouls also mention the head up display on the ID7 as it increases the instrument seen in direct forward direction. But the video are very good presentation of both the cars. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on these two cars. I like VW quality and practicality, but never liked design, which is too simple and boring, especially interior. Seems they don't like to take risks and stay in the comfort zone. It was actually the reason, why we didn't buy ID3. As a concept car, it looked cool. When it was brought to the public, interior was a joke, including childish front panel, so we didn't proceed further. Mercedes is expensive, but spot-on design, would definitely go for it, if the boot was a hatchback type, because we also have dogs. So, VW for practicality and Mercedes for design and comfort.

I would go for Mercedes, if I didn't have dogs. It's a beautiful quality car. Myself, I have Kia EV6 for almost 2 years, which is a good car inside out. Driving EVs' since 2017, and wouldn't go back to petrol or diesel.

What should have been mentioned is, that the ID.7 comes with AR Head up Display as standard. That kind of compensates for the small display. The ID.7 will come as AWD and GTX. GTX will have something around 340hp.

Depreciation isn’t something I would cover on a review of a car. It’s sadly not something that can be predicted either. However most new cars will often depreciate up to 30% to 40% within the first few years. EV’s typically more so because as battery technology gets better every year, and manufacturers strive for more range each time a new model comes out, it makes the previous one less favourable. On a positive note, shop for a used one and you can get yourself a bargain for an EV! I could include the kerb weights on reviews like this going forward if you’d like? Always open to suggestions! EQE: 2,385kg ID7: 2,172kg (Approx weights according to Google) Service intervals you’ll have to chat to a dealer as it’ll vary round the world so depends where you live 🤓🙏

I'd go for the ID.7. The price differential is too great and the EQE exterior looks a bit old-manish. MB can justify a premium for their brand but not GBP17,000. Especially given Chinese rival products are getting better by the minute.

Nice Comparison! Again! At the time I bought my EQE the ID7 was not available yet (took volkswagen quite some time to get production going). And yes, ID7 was on the shortlist. So I fully understand the comparison. However if the bootspace is not that important I tent to think the Mercedes offers a slightly quieter ride and offers ever so slighty more inituitive controls. However this being my lease car you will be surprised that it can be almost the same leaseprice, since the residual value after 3-5 years is determining its lease rate, hence the difference between the ID7 and the EQE is much smaller. But I agree with you, If the ID 7 was available at the time, I might have chosen for the ID7😉

Thank you! Both drive in an almost identical way and that’s even driving them back to back. If it was then done on separate days, I’d be very impressed if someone could tell the difference. The EQE feels like it doesn’t encourage sportier faster driving whereas the iD7 has a slightly more dynamic throttle response. But seriously they are so close, if you drive them both, please let me know how you get on!

Yeah again very similar 😅 and again driving them back to back I was hoping to notice more of a difference. But I guess this is the thing with EV’s they all sort of have a similar layout (battery, no gears etc) so they are going to drive the same if not very similar. I was hoping and when I went into this video that one was going to be completely different! And to add to this since I filmed it, VW have also brought one out now more range than the EQE, so the iD7 now takes the lead on that stat. And you can get an estate too! As usual very informative. My concern is a motor survey announced this week that full EV’s drop is 30% in first year and the two Mercedes EV’s were top of the list for largest drop. Probably because of the initial retail cost, I assume it will not be so bad on lesser priced models. I hope it settles down.

I wouldn’t say that’s just EV’s… All cars depreciate. www.webuyanycar.com/car-valuation/car-value-after-3-years/ Have a play on a calculator and any car can depreciate up to 30%. You’ll find EV’s yes can depreciate more because as a new model comes out it typically will have more range than before. For example a Mercedes EQA used to have 260 miles, a new model increased it to 320 and now most recently another new model to 350 ish. New tech, new cars, + high end cars usually depreciate more anyway regardless of who makes them.

I think people thought the insanity of 2021-2023 would somehow continue and are living in lala land. Just out of curiosity, as far as dash board displays are concerned, doesnt the ID7 have a very comprehensive Head up display? As for the ride comfort, the ID7 can be specified with an adjustable suspension system, and it can be optioned with award winning seats for being the comfortable!

The panoramic roof of the Mercedes seems to be bigger and doesn’t leave you in the dark in the back seat like in the VW. VW will always be cheaper to cover that segment of the market, as it has always been. Looking more classy and being more comfortable,Mercedes is the King.

I am ordering now as a company car an ID.7 Pro S Tourer fully loaded, it's going to be 78k eur. To me the extra range is the key advantage, really excited for my first electric (the tax breaks in Germany are huge for BEV!). As far as this comparison, I don't think the version of the ID.7 that you tested was as cheap as you mentioned. You have the more expensive seats, the panoramic roof, probably the navigator... I think it's more around 66-68k GBP. I don't know what extra were included in that EQE, though.

@@npoleary I will move to Germany in September, the idea is to find a house where I can install a charger, but I have it at work anyway. In Germany you pay half the taxes on your company car if BEV (saving like 350 eur per month, in my case). Just doing for that, tbh, the range in the highway is not ideal yet. I would want 400km for 80-10 cycle at 130kmh in winter to consider it not an inconvenience anymore, but I can work with the 250 this car seems to offer. About the comparison, it's a bit misleading because the price difference you show is enormous but you're not clarifying what you are actually getting for an ID.7 vs EQE, so it seems you're just paying for the brand

Sorry if you find it misleading but I aim for my channel to appeal to all. I purposely don’t go through added extras on any of my videos, which is the reason why I didn’t talk about them here. I’m focussing on the shell of the car, the ride quality, the size, the dimensions, the battery, engines (if applicable) and of course the price. I could go through specs like that but it will be out of date within months because manufacturers change them all the time. For the cars sadly I can’t choose what car I get, if I’m lucky enough to get a car from VW or Mercedes, that’s the model they give me. The price difference is enormous, you are paying for the brand. Both of those prices are for standard models on both.

I‘m thinking of replacing my bmw i4 with an id7 but I‘m a rather special kind of person for my cars. I hate when they restrict me and BMW doesn’t do that much. Audi didn’t let me type in an address while driving, Spotify on CarPlay also doesn’t let me type, browse for similar artists etc. Having to do more than one click for turning of the speed warning is a no go as well. And the materials inside have to be immaculate. I‘m curious how the VW will do in those regards. Earlier VWs didn’t even let me connect my phone while driving so I‘m not too optimistic

A difference that you didn't mention is the Mercedes needs a start button, the ID.7 doesn't. A year old EQE300 vs a new ID.7 is tempting. If you need an estate version of EQE, you have to go for the SUV version.

Shame if VW go back to "buttons" the touch buttons are actually very good if you go with them and learn. They are both physical buttons and touch. I thought I would hate them but they are so nice to use. The only negatives are the non backlighting of the climate sliders under the screen and lack of fan control without dipping into the menu...

There's 2 things I don't understand: 1 why is touch a disadvantage? 2 If they are so close in terms of your preference, wouldn't GBP 17k be an easy decisive factor?

Touch screens are perfectly fine for multimedia systems but touch can be distracting if the most simplest of functions like climate control are hidden menus deep on a multimedia system. Same goes for steering wheel functions, when an actual button is pressed you would know with the way it feels. But if it’s touch and has no haptics or feedback to the user, then you have to look down and take your eyes off the road. To clarify in even more depth, there are haptics in the Volkswagen but a sound for clicking in the Mercedes for the steering wheel functions.

Noticed the ID7 showing 97% charge and circa 305 miles of range. Not really the 480 advertised. Any view on that? Surprised you didn’t call that out.

The iD7 has a WLTP range of 380 not 480. 480 would be very impressive! And might make one of the world’s best! 😅 Maybe on their next one! But to answer your question the range indicator in this car is no different to your petrol / diesel car if it has one. Basically it’s adaptive, so one day you could charge and it’ll say 370 and one day it could say 250. It all depends where you drive and how much power you use. You can test this in your own car, do lots of driving round town during traffic and for example my petrol car will show 280 or 300 ish miles. Then go on a long trip, come back and fuel up and it’ll show north of 400. This is because that figure is adaptive, I’ve traveled at faster speeds that are more economical than driving round town. The opposite effect happens when you’ve been on a road trip and then continue to drive round town, the range indicator will adjust and bring that range back down because you’re consuming more power from stopping and starting. So nothing to call out! 😅

Thank you! Heat pump was about £1k as an option so just over $1,200 (approx conversion) No I honestly don’t know why manufacturers use haptics or touch controls for things like that. But apparently buttons are coming back in the VW! 🙏

The EQE does not have a heat pump. Not possible. Not as standard and not available as an option. I drive my EQE for six months now. So in the (cold) winter.. the energy consumption is considerably higher (+ 20-30% compared to summer). With a heat pump, that difference might be (a bit) smaller. But with a (very) big batterij, like with the Merc, you’ll still be allright.

The EQE does have a heat pump, I do a lot of research on my videos before I even pick up the camera. As always I mention in my videos, spec varies round the world so if you’re based somewhere in else then spec WILL be different.

@@npoleary Hi Nick, I must admit I heard about this in a couple of reviews in the Netherlands and Belgium (of well known reviewers) and I never looked further in the specs for this. My apologies for stating this was wrong in your review. A very good review that I enjoyed watching. I was also in between the ID7 and the EQE last year in october, but needed a car very urgently. For a new ID7 I had to wait for 4 months and I could pick up a used EQE 350+ of 2022 with 17k kms for about the same money. So that made the deal. But if there would have been a used ID7 for 10k euro less, than I think I might have chosen the ID7. As much car for less cash.

You said that the I.D 7 has a small driver's screen. At least we in Finland have an AI head up display as standard. I don't know if in other countries? So you don't even need that small screen. In Mercedes, you have to pay a big price for that. So it should have been mentioned in the differences between the cars

Yes absolutely you’re not the first to mention this, I kicked myself after the car went back as I didn’t realise it was standard equipment. In every car I’ve reviewed a head up display is optional equipment. As specs vary round the world a lot, I try not to go through specs to much as it won’t apply to a lot of the world (I’m thankful to have viewers in lots of countries) so I try to just focus on the car itself. Hey Nick, I know this might be a bit late, but I recently talked with you about getting a 2023 GLA 45 AMG (my dream car). I realized that it didn’t came with sensors, is there a way to installing them after being manufactured? I recently spoke with my NY MB car dealer and they told me that it was not recommended to installed them after manufactured. I did had a 2018 GLA 180 sport with parking sensors in Peru, and it was the best car I could have as an Architect for such tight and bumpy roads. Is there a way to certifiably install them without damaging anything OR do I need to buy the certified pieces from Europe or UK and find a third party installer on my own? I have been cautious with the car and its 382hp but not having sensors keeps me at edge. Please do let me know if there is a way I could install 2023 GLA 45 AMG parking sensors assists or other third party sensors I could safely install in my car!

Hey! Oh yeah a GLA 45, wow what an awesome car! Sadly I don’t cover modifications on my channel or mechanical aspects so I really wouldn’t know. If I was in the same position as you I’d be speaking to my local dealer too. Most car manufacturers will never retrofit things as they usually will only sell things as they’re described from new. You yes of course could get them fitted but it would be an aftermarket option which wouldn’t integrate with the car’s system. You’ll have to chat with Mercedes for their expertise on that one.

My fear is that by drilling into the bumpers and rearranging the system, the cars acoustics and other sensor could be damaged. But it’s a risk I’m willing to make. Thank you for the advice! If a family say with a couple of kids, prams etc had to decide I think it would be the Volkswagen purely for the boot space. The Mercedes is too small as is the opening.

yes, I just had to make this decision and I picked the id.7. There's no objective reason to buy the EQE over the ID.7 other than aesthetics

Have you ever done a breakdown of your A Class. My dealer told me they were junk and not nearly as quiet as any other model. They were just an entry model MB on the level of a cheap Toyota.. True????

I've done a couple of reviews on it and still love it! And genuinely as with all of my videos, they are my honest thoughts. Now when it comes to people's own thoughts, individual people in dealers may have their own preferences for their own ideal car like we all would ourselves. So for example if I were to compare an A-Class to an S-Class (which I did once on my channel) there's a stark difference in quality. But I would hope there's a stark difference because the price is £30k all the way up to £130k and more! Now I don't know this person, but they may have a company car and be in an E-Class. Again compare that to A-Class, there's a difference. But A-Class is still a premium car, but the further you go up the Mercedes range and any German Range of car, the more luxurious it gets. And the price too 😅

I have a 2021 A250e saloon. It's a heap. Dozens of rattles, squeaks, awful road and engine noise, poor auto gear box and a lumpy, inconsistent brake feel. It's the most disappointing car I've ever owned.... hugely overrated based on my 3 years of ownership....

There are more competitive options to Mercedes. I, personally don't think its worth almost 20 grand for bells and whistles and lets be honest, quality is now the same.
