(6/9/2023) Mercedes-Benz is the first automaker to get permission from California regulators to sell or lease vehicles with Level 3 (hands-off and eyes-off) self driving tech on designated roads, Reuters has reported. The California Department of Motor Vehicles issued a permit for the company's Drive Pilot system, provided it's used under certain conditions and on specific roads. Mercedes-Benz previous received a similar certification in Nevada.

A lot of people seem to be missing the point. Level 2 automation is still available at all times, above 60kmph, or when it rains, etc. But, when those conditions (below 60, not raining) are met, then you're able to let your hands off the steering wheel completely.
@holahola-gp6vd
@holahola-gp6vd 2 жыл бұрын
I think that you miss the point. where can you take your hands of the steering wheel? you cannot drive it in highways.(all highways are over 80 kmp). you cannot drive it in the city streets. you cannot drive it at rain ,snow ,haze ,fog ,or at night. so its essentially level 3 for maybe 2% of your driving time? then yes I agree. its totally "level 3"

@@holahola-gp6vd but it takes over in the most annoying situations, in traffic jams where you might have to travel 20 kmph on a highway for an hour, or when there is a construction site. I like driving, except in these situations, so for me this takes a lot of the downsides away, even though it might only be useful for a few percent of the time.

@@holahola-gp6vdYou can't drive it in city streets? There are so many city streets that have speed limits that range from 30s - just 40. Level 3 is perfect for many streets with speed limits like that, not to mention during times where there is lots of traffic , which can happen a lot on busy roads. You are the one missing the point of this.

Level 3 is pretty insane, even if capped at 60 km/h. Note that it means the car drives unsupervised! You have to start somewhere. The question will be how well the system really works, if you (and Mercedes) feel you can 100% trust it. It is then easy enough to go up. Esp. to speeds as low as 55 or 65 mph ... Note that dropping speed, rain and highway restrictions with Level 3 would make it Level 4.

as someone who works at that filed since 1999,i can tell you that this systems will NEVER be 100% safe .if anybody tells you different he is a straight up liar. from my experience, this is a weak level 3. the biggest problem with self driving systems is that this technology based on statistical models instead of real time conscious decision making. in reality there are infinite possibilities and the computer cannot predict and understand every new situation he finds "himself" in. if you will drive and read a newspaper or sleep your life is in the hands of the computer """A.I""" nonsense. this systems(the ones that i "program" and check on daily basis are very good at certain situations, especially the auto breaking system that can really save lives(because usually it will autobrake for idiots who play there phones and driving drunk we normal people don't really need this but it defiantly works and saves lives. but the big difference when this system drives for you, its not safe as you might think and sometimes even lame. level 2 is a very good idea, but level 3-4 useless.

But isn't a Level 2 Tesla already doing what you are hoping a Merc will do (i.e., trust driving it at 60 mph) with almost a 99% confidence. That confidence number (i.e., number of no disengagement drives) is almost close of 100% in highways for a Tesla (if you consider the Merc is only able to drive on highways) and not just 2 highways which Merc got clearance for. It drives on all highways in the US. See where I'm going with L3 > L2 argument?
@falklumo

@@kaminenianirudh I am not arguing about Tesla vs. Mercedes here. Tesla FSD is pretty amazing by itself. I argue that L3 (which implies 100%) is insane even in the restrictive sense. As Mercedes must take responsibility for every remaining error! 99% is FAR FAR FAR less than 100%. It is the difference between an accident every 100km or every 100000km ...
@kaminenianirudh
@kaminenianirudh Жыл бұрын
@@falklumo so the way to think about it is, are you fine with having a 100% (L3) system for 15 miles or a 99% (L2) system for 1500 miles. Which do you think is more practical? Also note that the 99% is easier to improve for the L2 (cuz it doesn't need regulatory approvals like the L3) but the 15 miles is very hard to improve cuz you need to test the system thoroughly to assume all liability.

@@VR_Wizard Mercedes Drive Pilot uses lidar, stereoscopic cameras and forward radar. The three methods allow redundancy, even if one of these three system fails (e.g. sun whites out cameras) the car can still drive based on the sensor input from the two other systems. In each of the four corners there is radar that detects traffic in neighboring lanes. In front wind screen there is additional wide angle camera that films traffic light and shows in on the display in the car. SAE Level 3 means it can determine by itself what conditions it can operate in. This allows the driver to be hands off and eyes off the road when the car says it can handle itself. A level 3 system can expand its capabilities over time, but where it can go or where it can't is not part of the Level 3 definition.

@@johnnguyen3834 its not really level 3 no matter how you will play on words and definitions. level 3 at the bigger picture means partial self driving at certain situations. this system, however has so many restrictions that's its a very weak level 3.(or level 3 2% of the time.) only works on highways. only up to 37mph. what means that its essentially useless on highways.(When do you drive on the highway under 38mph? this is dumb) no driving in city streets. no driving at night, rain ,snow ,fog ,haze. only on geo fenced area. you can call it "level 3 how much as you want. but in reality that's just playing around with definitions.

60kph is 37mph...this system is practically worthless for the most part unless you live in a major city and sit in rush hour traffic constantly. If I were driving cross country in the US, it would not work on 95% of the drive while on any interstate system, and the fact that it can not auto reengage when one of the many things that kick it offline is less than desirable considering this car will obviously cost a ton of money. Not much bang for the crazy town bucks. Keep working Mercedes, this gimic would only be useful if it were on a go-cart at this stage.

My Tesla FSD Beta does everything you described and more. In addition to hazard avoidance, smooth acceleration and advanced cornering, unlike the Mercedes system my FSD Beta is NOT geofenced and WILL navigate on secondary streets. Oh, and it’s speed limitation is about twice that of the Mercedes - 65 KPH vice 85 MPH (137 KPH) in the Tesla. Although I must gently rest my hand on the wheel and am not permitted to watch movies, Tesla FSD is only limited by Tesla’s developers, not its inherent software capabilities. Based on your reporting, Tesla’s FSD is clearly more advanced than Mercedes’ comparable offering which surprisingly has received Level 3 certification ahead of Tesla. It baffles me why the American media and its lawmakers make believe Tesla doesn’t exist - when this American automaker is clearly the competition to beat in the FSD and EV fields. In general, Tesla’s boast faster acceleration than most other EVs - and just try driving your Mercedes EQS across the US without the Tesla Supercharger network and see how that works out for you. Putting aside any accusations of more questionable influences by legacy auto manufacturers on the media and lawmakers, perhaps it is because Tesla refuses to become a union shop. Still, in my mind, American made products top unionized mostly-foreign made products.
