Step by step video: How to change your brakes on a Mercedes SLK.
Do your own brake job. Most of my videos are shot with me holding the camera. (Meaning I do these repairs with one hand... If I can do these jobs one handed, I'm sure you can get it done with both hands).. Enjoy!

Thank you for the video/refresher course. I changed my 320 brakes 10ish years ago and kind of forgot how to do it. I forgot about the spring. Not totally different from American brakes but, the video sure helped to refresh my memory. Thank you for the video and happy motoring to you

I actually wish I'd have found this video sooner, since you're far more detail specific compared to others I found, since the intricacy of the Benz Brake assembly is different from others I've tackled in the past. Big help, thanks, keep up the good videos, this saved me a lot of aggravation.

I film it myself as I'm working (harder because one hand is holding the camera) but it gives you the correct view as when you will be working on your vehicle. Make sure you remove the cap from your brake reservoir under the hood before you start the job. When you push the caliper piston in it will cause pressure in the brake line. By removing the cap from the brake reservoir it allows the brake fluid level to rise a bit in the reservoir. You can put a shop rag around the brake reservoir cap area to absorb any brake fluid that may overflow due to the pressure. You won't lose a significant amount of brake fluid from the pressure.

Good video but you should always open your fluid reserver before compressing your pistons back and also grease the back of your new pads to eliminate squeeky brakes.

I always replace pads & rotors at the same time. Both parts need to have a true flat surface or you will cause hot spots and cracking of the rotor and an increased braking distance.
@frankrandise1487
@frankrandise1487 6 жыл бұрын
Having been in the automotive industry for almost 8 years now I wouldn't bother with the sandpaper. Best thing to do is take your rotors to a local parts store to be machined or to replace them. There's a nice fat rust lip on the end there indicating significant wear which usually indicated warping as well. I second removing the reservoir cap before compression the piston or opening the bleeder. You'll have to bleed the brakes regardless and you might as well be pushing clean fluid through! Great video though!
@tysamuels
@tysamuels 4 жыл бұрын
You wouldn’t need to bleed the brakes if you didn’t disconnect the fluid line though? Agree on resurfacing or replacing the rotors. You can see the sandpaper application isn’t even just by looking at the video.

I have found that calipers are too cheap to repair. Brand new/high performance aftermarket calipers are cheaper than oem. Also, if you really want to save you can get used calipers at the junkyard (not my recommendation)

@iRepairAutos
@iRepairAutos 7 жыл бұрын
You don't have to grease anything. Grease will attract brake dust and other debris from the roadside. The C clamp is alright to compress the piston. Not sure if I mentioned in the video, remove the brake reservoir cover to allow it to breath easily when you compress the piston. Good luck!

If your brake pad warning light did not come on then you don't need to change the sensors. If it did come on then you need to buy new sensors and install. The sensors get ground down and create contact which triggers the light. The light will stay on until the new sensor is replaced. No other action is required to turn the light off other than changing the sensor. Once the light is on, you can visually look at each sensor to see which one needs replacing. I should create a video on this....

+iRepair Autos this was super helpful!! Thank you for the thorough answer. The MB dealership quoted $650 for my SLK 280. AutoZone = about $100 total for front back brake pads and sensor plus your DIY video. Thanks a lot!

I'm glad you found the video helpful and most importantly that you saved yourself a $550... Sometimes you save even more in the long run when you do it yourself. I have found mechanics "mess" with vehicles and cause other problems that they then tell customers about and scare them into doing the repair. Subscribe for more Videos.

Well done video. A little tripod may help with filming though. The guy at the auto parts store said that I need new sensors because the pads were so worn that it activated the sensor. Any truth to that? They were only a couple of bucks each so no biggie either way.

As often as required... The wear sensors will let you know when they absolutely need to be replaced. However I've seen some sensors not work. Its best to visually inspect them I would say every oil change...

Great tutorial. I notice that you cut out the 30 minutes of cussing while trying to get that damn spring in the bottom hole. BTW...if you do the rotors you do not have to mess with those T45 screws. Just remove the 2x 18mm head screws and the entire assembly comes right off. Actually, much easier. I had one hell of a time trying to get the rotors off the hub. Had to heat up the center and the pry them off with my $19.95 China jack handle. I placed the handle between the back of the rotor and the 18mm bolt ear. Beating it with a hammer did nothing.
