Thanks for sharing, it's a problematic engine that's no doubt about it, but with tips coming from you we get to know how to be alert. I have changed the fuel filter housing and the EGR plus the intake manifold cleaning DIY thanks to you, was not a easy job but with your help and taking my time job well done. Thanks again MercMan.

Brilliant video. I just discovered your channel and I love it! I hate the direction that MB have taken. You'll know as well as I do, a V6 CDi can be disconnected, lifted/manhandled out of a W211 or 221 in a matter of a few hours. These units are a nightmare in comparison. Thanks for the excellent uploads!

By replacing timing chain from rear side of the engine it is a task job by discounting engine and transmission units to their whole wiring harness ,water line,fuel line ,intake and exhaust line hose and pipes So it will difficult to their old varients😢

We replaced timing chain and service belts after refurbishing the engine head. At first the engine was running well but after it started to make a strong ticking noise on the engine head. We checked timing and it was perfect. The computer tells us that gasoline pressure is OK and apparently the high-pressure pump is working fine. What we noticed is that the camshaft olives have been worn after putting the engine back together. The main issue is the loss of power and now we have to deal with this ticking noise as well. There were no cracks in the engine head and the cylinders are perfect. We replaced the inlet airflow motor. We replaced the air pressure sensor and the TPS sensor. Nothing! What is going on? There are no cracks in the exhaust manifold and the turbo is running fine. Intercooler pipes are a fine. The main problem was the loss of power and we couldn’t figure out what it was so we opened the engine. After refurbishing everything the problem is still there but there is no check engine light and no sensor error. What’s going on?

Great video and good advice, mine went but I caught it early and had the chain and tensioner done. Any idea why they wear out on these?
@mercmantips4 жыл бұрын
Just a bad design, nearly all OM651 engines sooner or later starts to rattle, you can see in the video its a single chain and its thin like a bicycle chain, the old diesels use to have a double chain and never gave problems...
@mogdefender852023 күн бұрын
Causes of failing chains and guides are mostly the emissions hardware. Feeding hot exhaust fumes back into the intake makes the engine run very hot. This heat causes rapid oil brake down (hence shorter service interval with good quality oil are necessary) The excessive hot oil also makes the plastic of the chain guides brittle. As the chain stretches due to wear and the chain tensioner running out of adjustment and / or chain tensioner failure will causes extra slack on the chain, causing it to start whipping against the chain guides. The now brittle plastic chain guides will crack / break causing even more chain slack with the chain likely snapping. At that point the pistons will run into the valves; game over!

@Raffo1404 жыл бұрын
MercMan Tips same as my own, full dealer history 87’000 miles, as yet no chain noise. Can’t help but feel the stop/start function plays a big role in degrading a chain that’s that light. Massive torque being put through it on every restart and as you know, chains do not like being jerked up to speed. Don’t trust Mercs recommended service intervals either. More particles in it = more friction and reduced lubrication. Such a pity with it being a cracking car...........although the panoramic roof is driving me f*cking insane with creaking when on a winding/bumpier road
@driftr1dr7194 жыл бұрын

I agree with the stupid design, so if you remove the rocker cover you can work on the chain at the rear of the engine and connect new and old chain and turn the engine so new chain eventually replaces old chain, but it is a tricky job, if you drop any of the pins or brackets of the new chain down the engine then your in trouble 😅

How many kilometers did this engine have when you replaced the timing chain. My 2011 C250 has 265000 kilometers and never had problems with timing chain or tensioners (i better knock on some wood)

If yours doesn't have the start/stop system maybe thats why it lasts longer

Hi there. I have a 2015 E220 With this engine. On a cold start my engine does not sound like this but does have a slight ticking noise like tappets and goes away after a few seconds and the engine sounds smooth and normal. Its covered 108k. Any ideas please.

Did it turn out to be the chain? You can remove the injectors and rocker cover to see if the chain has play.

@@BibiMizrah hi. It was tappet noise. The hydraulic lifters are worn slightly and make noise on colder mornings. Merc indie said its normal on these engines and not a concern. On warmer morning cold starts its silent. Car has now 156k. Running fine and no chain noise at all thanks

@@pgachapman That’s good news! I have a 2015 OM651 in a C-Class. I get a similar noise that you have described here. I am getting the rocker cover gasket changed next week so will get them to check the chain for slack. I have uploaded a video of the noise on my channel, please could you have a look to see if this is the same noise yours was making on cold start? To me it sounds like tappets. If it’s the chain I will be upset as I always change oil and filter at 8k as minimum and have never used start stop. Thanks.

@@BibiMizrah hi. Will get look at the video after work. I change my oil every 10k as i do long motorway journeys every day. My indie told me to change the chain tensioner every 100k as they start to fail slowly at that mileage. He said Only to use genuine mercedes tensioners. so I bought one fromnthe dealler and it cost me £110 and four hours to fit. Make sure if yiu buy one that it has the upgraded 4 oil holes in it as the older ones only had 2. Helps with oil flow..

@@pgachapman thank you, let me know if the sound is familiar if possible please. Good info about the tensioner, I will give Mercedes a call to get the parts price. I have heard about the new four hole variant previously. How much did the tensioner cost to fit?
