I was with an 81 mm Mortar platoon. In a desert environment. Digging Mortar pits, dog legs and ammo pits by hand with pick axe, shovel, e-tools etc. in limestone. Then a unit with these passed our Pods and offered to assist. We called them frogs. They saved us from our arms falling off lol. They more than did the trick. Tough little vehicles. 8 weapon emplacements successfully dug thanks to what we called a Frog.

A trick for installing heavy tires. Use a shovel. You put the tire up against the axle put the shovel under the edge then push down on the shovel handle to lift the tire. You can move the handle side to side to align the holes, or move the handle and rotate the tire to align the holes.

Wouldn't mind having one of those, but the front loader and backhoe would go away, and I'd add winches, front, sides and rear and a hydraulic boom with winch on the rear, to make an off-road wrecker. Probably add a welder and air compressor, as well.

The backhoe is a Case 35 I believe. Same hoe as used on the Case 580 Super E. Many improvements over earlier version - longer wearing pins and bushings, better seals in cylinders, better routing of hoses through the swing tower, real strong geometry in the swing cylinders for sweeping dirt back into your trench. Probably wasn't spec'd on the military machines, but case made a mechanical bucket quick coupler that was really handy when changing hoe bucket sizes. Should fit on this machine too.

The people who are loading the equipment have NO ownership so they don't care if they get damaged. This has been the history of the military. They don't own the equipment, they don't care. When I was in the Navy, I was in charge of the pump gang and I could have just scrapped the equipment and get new ones. I learned how to rebuild pump rotters rather than just trashing the rotters.

we used to have backhoes mounted on International trucks that folded up like this vehicle. I believe it only had one lever for the folding rams in about the same position as this vehicle. It's good to see separate levers for folding and locking. True story, one of our older, larger employees was next to a building just a few inches from the wall. while digging the truck slid another few inches towards the wall and a water spigot landed directly on the folding lever. Not knowing what was happening and not being too agile it folded him up in the machine. He survived but it was the last day he worked in any field job. It's good to see some shielding around those folding and locking levers just to keep branches or other items from causing a mishap.

Great units that most Americans have no idea what they are ... or just how tough/capable they are. We use them (sans attachments) at Hellenic Aerospace in Athens (Tanagra), Greece as our Aircraft Tugs (able to pull C-130/P-3/etc. around the flight line) ... bullet proof and would be a real help with all those Army attachments on a Farm ... so compact and reliable. Note that over here, in cold weather, we squirt a bit of gasoline in if the fuel is old or subzero conditions to help with the "waxing" in diesel motors (you have access to better "fuel reconditioning additives that are better" and should be part of your initial check list Clint (and cheaper than your "Go Juice/Ether" ;) ... 12 year old Diesel is just as bad as Hoses that old )... that and "Disconnect the Buzzer" ... In the south of Germany (Bavaria) and in Austria, these are very popular machines for forestry workers and communal services. Unfortunately, very high in price. The idea of this Unimog (UniversalMotorGerät) is to have a drive unit (tractor) for many different attachments. This goes from excavators to snow blowers and front loaders to generators and large water pumps. Everything was built very compact to achieve better off-road capability, unfortunately to the detriment of the boy who has to do the service. (Double crooked fingers and training as a surgeon helps 😂🤣).
@nycat7906
@nycat7906 2 жыл бұрын
@@waltervonoer9190 I agree the concept of them was good. The backhoe is from a Case 580 backhoe which is tried and true. The truck did move down the road at a decent clip which was part of the idea behind putting a backhoe on a truck. But unless you have 2 people working closely together it wasn't very good to dig with. You had to keep climbing off the back and move to the front in order to keep moving along digging. The front bucket worked ok in soft / loose material but other than that the standard transmission & clutch made using it hard. The truck kept stalling. We found on hills we had to have material in the front bucket. They were not very balanced even with the backhoe laying down and they were tippy side to side. In the Marines we only had the front bucket and backhoe as well as the hydraulic tools like the jackhammer and saw. They did work but tended to leak after prolonged use

Enjoyed the video. Being from Scotland, I've never seen a Unimog. Pretty weird looking but interesting vehicles. I didn't know Kevin was a Jedi. Nice lightsaber.

Here are a few more names. Spot and Flipper. They had issues with rolling down hills for some reason. Still they were a blast to operate. Even when I was the Unit Armorer, at NTC I still drove the thing.

I have seen those SEE vehicles in action. The chainsaw is so quiet! Our local guard unit had these and came out to the park I worked at for weekend training. They are kind of cool. Again, glad to see you using so much from Napa….they are the best for heavy duty. I assume you get the military batteries from them as well? Thanks for the video….keep them coming!

Love the videos Clint. You need your own lowboy and flat deck trailer with a nice Pete to Pull them both. Next Auctions keep this in mind. I am sure you paid a packet to move these vehicles.

Hey if your interested Black Dog makes an auto relay system that will turn the lights on and off with the ignition, so if the key is off then the lights are off if the key is on etc.

I did 15 years in the Army and was a unit supply specialist! The military is the biggest waster of taxpayer dollars of anyone! I have seen entire Conexus that came back from the middle east just dumped at the local landfill!

Where I am, backhoes are super expensive, and, I am dealing with two properties that are three hours minimum apart. Speed limit is only 50-80 kph.. so ... But tractors cannot be driven that far on road while this can. Plus, this is like the cost of a new pickup here.. back hoes are used by business people and a seventies case that needs repairs sells for more than three used pickups

I could use one of those for firebreaks, trail maintenance, and other chores on my property, but if I bought one, I'd feel like I paid for it twice, the way I get hammered with taxes every year. 😁

Those would be fun to have. With or without the rear attachment. Just a truck bed and a front loader for looks but that could be missing for a cool truck.
