Glad I could assist. As things come up I make the tutorials. The power window repair is helpful as that's a common problem. The auto transmission service is also worth knowing. I'd better get the videos organised into playlists!

Hi Scott, thanks again for documenting another of your projects. I was curious as to what triggered you to replace the PCV valve. Apart from capturing oil mist from the crankcase as per your example at the end of the video from your car, have your been able to ascertain any other effects? Cleaner exhaust for example with capturing the oil vapours rather than attempting to burn them? Thanks Ralph

Hi Ralph ... I removed the rubber pipe to the turbo and noticed a small puddle of oil in the intake. I decided to replace the PCV valve as the Vito is nearly 14 years old. The PCV valve tends to be overlooked but it does have a finite life. The rubber diaphragm deteriorates. It gets hard and brittle and sometimes splits. It also gets sticky and can adhere to the underside of the cap and subsequently have restricted movement. I removed the cap from the PCV I took off it sure enough the rubber was hard and not sealing on the outlet properly. My research tells me this type of PCV has a normal life of about 6 to 8 years. I also feel modern diesels benefit with a catch can. They pump a lot of oil mist due to high compression and long stroke. These engines all have intake port shut off flaps (swirl flaps) driven by a servo motor and exhaust gas re circulation (EGR valve). The oil mist causes a build of a tar like material produced by mixing oil mist with exhaust gas. The sticky tar builds up in the intake system and starts interfering with the swirl flaps to the point they jam partially closed creating all sorts of problems. The servo motor can fail because the flaps aren't moving freely. We have that issue with ML320CDI in our family. The swirl flap servo has failed and the mechanism driving the flaps appears to have snapped. I'm pretty sure the intakes are gunked up with tar. It's a pity we didn't fit a catch can earlier as maybe the issue could have been avoided. It doesn't take long before you generate a cup of oil in the bottom of the catch can ... oil that would have been introduced to the intake system via the turbo.

@@ScottElliott152 I am not familiar with that 4Cyl diesel but V6, V8 gasoline in US... I can say that when the narrow PCV vent hoses get plugged up with junk.... then the oil filter and cooler seals start seriously leaking oil pressure with a chance after quick seals-only repairs to blow up the weak cooler internals and start mixing oil in coolant. So yes stupid German PCV design is nothing to be overlooked. (Extra nuggets to keep an eye on or else big damage: weak serpentine tensioner and plastic idlers and extra weak timing chain tensioners are a Benz staple) 👍

Or do what I did put the intake pipe in the dish washer and replace the oil seperator unit with MBs modified part (that way you don't need to install a oil catch can)

Hi do you need to torque the valve down?
@ScottElliott152
@ScottElliott152 3 жыл бұрын
I torqued it by "feel" as I've been doing this kind of work for over four decades. You can use a torque wrench if you wish. I use a torque wrench on critical structural bolts. The PCV valve is not a structural component.

Hello Scott, I have a 2011 Viano V6 diesel, and since I bought it I have consumed 1.5 liters per 1000 km, could this valve be the cause of the high oil consumption? I don't get any white smoke but the issue has me quite concerned, I smell oil vapor from time to time inside the passenger compartment, could there be overpressure inside the engine, and for that reason does it consume oil? thanks for your videos, greetings
@ScottElliott152
@ScottElliott152 2 жыл бұрын
It's probably not the piston rings. It could be the Positiive Crankcase Ventilation system. Replace the PCV valve and the orange seals first and see what happens. It's not expensive and they're easy to replace.

I Scott, was wondering if you could tell me if the injectors are supposed to have a rubber O ring in the groove where the nozzle screws off. Silly me ran my 05 Vito completely out of diesel and caused a block somewhere days later, and wont start now. I pulled the injectors out and unblocked them, then had to put heicoils in all 4 clamp bolt holes, as they were stripped out, got it all back in with new copper washers, still can't get it running... Any tips before I get a mechanic out.. probably most definately new fuel filter for starters, and where the short metal fuel lines from injectors to the rail ( I'm assuming that's the rail) I noticed that cranking it with the nut cracked open a bit, there was hardly any fuel coming out compared to a heap from the other ones.. would that be the issue maybe, and how would I go about unclogging that? Any tips would be much appreciated, and sorry for the short story. Thanks mate

Hi Andy ... no o-ring that I'm aware of. I did the same thing with my Nissan 4wd and had to change the fuel filter ... so replace the fuel filter for starters. You've obviously sucked some debris from the tank and it's caused a restriction. It's a tedious process of checking all the lines for blockages.

@@ScottElliott152 I didn't think they had an O ring, I have seen some injectors with them but all good. And I'll get new filter and hope for the best. One more thing... Bonjour, a votre avis désactivé la vanne egr ou faire un récupérateur d'huile,merci
@ScottElliott152
@ScottElliott152 4 жыл бұрын
