Mercedes W123 AC Condenser Upgrade

I have a 300sd that has been sitting for 4 years since i got it. As the hvac was totally shot. I have been working on bringing it back to life so far got the heat to work and get the pods sorted out. Seeing this gives me hope for getting cold ac with 134 i plan replace the whole ac system and get upgraded compressor.

What were the H/L pressures at idle and 1500rpm??? Only info is low/idle 35psi . Was the sight glass fully charged ??. A modern condenser lowers the high side psi to send cooler liquid to the evaporator coil compared to old school condensers . Your Merc condenser is small and definitely needs the aux condenser fan . It would be best to wire the fan relay into the compressor power wire . You will never over cool a condenser . U could actually double the size and it would still perform outstandingly .

And you have the stock a/c compressor? That is very impressive temperature drop. I’m going to have to try that.

Running a new R4 style compressor. Which is the stock style compressor on these.

Does envirosafe refrigerant actually cools better? I am looking for good refrigerant to charge my W123 with after repair.

Definitely cools better than r134 in these older cars. Not sure if it cools better than r12.

Impressive vent temps at idle... Been using duracool with a sanden and PF condenser and never see under 55f at idle. What was your total charge weight and low side PSI?

I converted the w123 r12 weight to r134 charge then used the 134 conversion on the Envirosafe can. I don’t recall exactly what that ended up being and I don’t recall the pressure either. I normally try to go by weight and also check the sight glass for bubbles and use pressure just as a health check.

I appreciate the response. I’m curious, how many cans was that? Reason I ask, the factory charge volume was calculated for the factory volume of the system. After swapping components, hoses, etc, that volume can change quite a bit.

Question does your Fan work? I don’t think I have ever herd it run.

It does, I replaced the switch when I replaced the compressor and drier. The switch is on the drier.
