This video is a compilation of the previous 4 videos in my W210 series of A/C component replacements. The video shows from the beginning to the end how to replace the following: AC Compressor, AC Expansion Valve, AC lines, and AC Receiver Drier. It also shows how to charge your system with fresh Freon. This job can easily cost $2,000 plus in the U.S.
Expansion Valve - www.fcpeuro.co...
O-Rings Package: www.autohausaz...

Crowfoot Wrench Set - www.harborfrei...
If you cannot afford the MB brand compressor, don't worry. There are two solid third party brands with very good reputation. Denso and Nissens.

You need to add 4.05 ounces (120 cubic centimeters) of compressor oil (PAG 46) to the compressor unless it comes prefilled with oil. Even then, if you are not sure it comes with PAG 46, drain it and replace it with PAG 46.
Keep in mind, compressor oils are mostly hygroscopic and absorb the moisture from the air. Moisture kills A/C systems. Therefore, minimize the amount of time your oil bottle is open, the compressor is open if prefilled with oil, or if any port to your A/C system is open for longer than a few minutes.
www.fcpeuro.co...
It is always a good idea to replace the two rubber gaskets at the tip of the two pressure lines connecting the Expansion Valve and the Condenser to the Compressor. Depending on when you last replaced the gaskets, consider replacing them. You can remove the two old gaskets and try to find matching gaskets at an auto parts store or buy the following packages:
www.autohausaz...
www.autohausaz...
I used the Hansa Receiver Drier model but the cheapest Receiver Drier as of October, 2019, is the Rein model which is much better than Rein and can be found at FCPEuro.com for $13.00:
www.fcpeuro.co....
If you live in the U.S., you can borrow both tools you will need for this job - A/C Manifold Gauge and Vacuum Pump - from most franchised Auto Parts stores. You can also purchase them from the following links.

Pump: www.amazon.com...

Just finished my complete AC replacement. Took about six hours, which included filling AC. Works great now. Suggestion to anyone doing these repairs; when you replace each part, do a vacuum check before you change out the next part. This way you verify each part doesn't have a leak. If you replaced all three, then do a vacuum check, then find a leak, you will have to figure out where your leak is. And when you have all the plastic out, give it a good clean. Airflow has increased greatly by cleaning all the plastics. Thank you for the great video.

Masood: I completed this same job yesterday in around 8 hours (new compressor, expansion valve, and receiver/drier) on my '03 CLK 320. Your video identified some tools I needed before I decided to tackle the job. (Torque wrenches, extensions, wobble & universal joint adapters, etc.). I replaced the expansion valve first - and found this to be the most difficult & time consuming part of the job. I'm glad I changed the $20 expansion valve, because after pulling it out I found the internal spool rod was coated with a white substance. Besides the high and low side hoses, the compressor is very similar to an alternator job with the exception of having to do some work from below. On my CLK, it was easier to remove & replace the compressor from the bottom. I have HVACR experience, so the refrigerant evacuation and charge was typical - but your suggestions are spot on. I want to thank you for publishing your steps. This video gave me the motivation to order $250 in parts, another $100 or so in tools I didn't have, and the knowledge to know exactly where to go to rebuild my CLK's refrigerant circuit. Thank you!

@martyebest

@@o.b.aoyinloye2591 Yes - I ordered a new compressor, expansion valve, and receiver/drier on Amazon for about $250 total. Heed Masood's warning on making sure your replacement compressor has 4oz of PAG 46 oil. My Denso 4711293 (I paid $180 - it's about $220 now) came with only minimal oil - maybe a single ounce! I drained it all and poured in 4 oz of PAG 46 ($10 for a 8 oz bottle). The expansion valve was only $15 (It's about $20 now) and the receiver/dryer another $20. My AC has ran very cool all summer long. Take your time, give the compressor a chance to kick in while charging refrigerant, and you'll be fine.

An outstandingly detailed video for those who have a bit of mechanical know how. The details and explanations go way beyond anything I've seen on Y.T. My 1998 C230 with 410382 km has an excellent working air conditioner. The compressor is beginning to get a bit noisy, and I have been nursing it along with an occasional evacuation, flush, and recharge. But it's just a matter of time before I'll be performing this complete service. Yes, the car is old, but it's in excellent shape, has been well maintained by me, and has been a most reliable car that is still exciting to drive. My other car is a boring 2019 Subaru Legacy which I seldom drive, has only 16,000 km on the odometer.

But oil already exists in the system. So how do you know how much oil is in the system? 4 ounce you put plus existing oil? It is more than we want. Can you explain? Thanks. And when you get chance can you make condenser replacement video?

I think the compressor is working. Should I get a code reader to try to narrow it down or is this a waste of time? If a waste of time, should I just go ahead and replace expansion value, compressor, and receiver/drier then recharge?

Great video, definitely more to fixing the A/C than just replacing the compressor. A few questions, what is the torque on the evaporator nuts? and then how do you prevent air from getting into the yellow line when changing refrigerant bottles? stop the car, close manifold (blue) knob, disconnect bottle, bleed yellow line, i.e., similar as to when initially connecting the first bottle? Do you need to replace the condenser (looks like a radiator to me)? Did you use the TFE paste just on the dryer connections or also the compressor as well? Other than replacing the new oil that came with the compressor, did you flush any of the other items? Lots of ?'s I know, sorry. Thanks in advance.
@masood-tv
@masood-tv 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, yes, it is quite involved and intimidating at first. But, if you follow the procedure, it is really not that big of a deal. I have mentioned the torque value in the video for the evap nuts. It is 8NM. You don't prevent air from getting into the yellow line when switching cans. I detail it out starting at 30:00 minutes into the video. Basically, you close the blue knob, replace the empty can with a full one, release the trapped air and some small volume of Freon from yellow line at the gauge ...I am sort of agreeing with what you stated in your question. You should replace the radiator looking condenser if you fear that debris have made their way into it or if it cannot do its job anymore. There are ways to test if your condenser is good or bad which are beyond the scope of this video. If you are replacing your compressor, evaporator, and reciever/drier, AND, you have over 100K miles on the car, I would recommend you should if you can afford it (not very expensive either)... I did air flush the lines. You can and probably should liquid flush the system. I didn't because I didn't have the time. It is tremendously rewarding at the end when you restore your air conditioning system at a fraction of the cost of what any shop would charge. Benz dealerships would charge you even more.

After that, the central vent almost no air flow but the both side vent looks normal. Driving for a while say 20 mins, the wind shield start foggy because the AC keeps blowing along the defrost vent. Do you know the reason behind? No matter how I adjust the vent direction, the central vent keep no air flow. What I can do is to turn the AC at low speed level and this can reduce the foggy impact.
