The problem it's NOT the oil pump or cheap oil, it's the quality of the metal (to soft) they used make the balance shaft, well documented everywhere. Great video, tks.

MB actually recommends using 0w40 for the M273&272 motors. High mileage versions might benefit from the jump to 5 from 0 weight but only if they eat oil, otherwise stick with the 0w. That's what I've been using on my 135k miles M273 for the past 4 years and it's perfect.

I went ahead and replaced the spark plugs all around regardless and I'm still getting the misfire codes even though the car has little to no vibration and feels factory new. I don't think it is the timing shaft or Ballance shaft and I've just had the intake manifold replaced 8k miles ago and I've done everything I can to try and figure out my problem. I've disconnected the battery to reset the codes but they all still popped up when I reconnected it. @ken5ism4 жыл бұрын
The cause is a gear on the balance shaft inside the motor made of inferior material that wears down after a short amount of time and causes the camshaft to lose it's alignment. Oil grade is for lubrication of the metal parts inside of the engine and slight cooling, only! But the video is correct to a certain degree.

Thanks for the VId but this is NOT DUE TO IMPROPER OIL, my car has 44600 miles and has had Mobile 1 oil changed every 10k miles, and has already thrown these codes, its due to inferior materials used be Mercedes for the crank shaft sprocket!!!!

Mine is a 2007 and the TSB for 2007 engines say to replace the sensors. The TSB for the 2006 says replace the balancer shaft. I've been driving like 25k miles or so with the issue and there does not seem to be anything noticeable except for the check engine light. I got it from a 1 owner with perfect dealership records. back when I bought it, a friend worked at Mercedes and pulled the records. Mercedes...so stupid. They want like 6k to make this issue go away. Deleted it after drive stop and start again it came back. I changed the cam sensors from left to the right. Right now did not show up the engine light. What i supposed to do? I just bought it today. You think it would be probably the cam sensors?engine runs perfect no shaking no power lose, very smooth. What should I do? Codes was same p0017 and p0016

I did everything you said in this video. The two circles align , I changed oil and replaced sensors and solenoids however the p0016 p0017 still come up . What else could it be?

Awesome video. I know you probably get a lot of questions regarding this video and know you are probably a busy guy. I thought I would at least try and ask you what you might think about my situation. I think I may have a similar issue on my 2008 C300 but the error codes I am getting are p0060 and p0064 my check engine light is no off and the car runs just fine. I took the car to my local shop and they told me that they saw that a camshaft sensors was leaking oil. They then told me that the standard practice for this issue is to replace all 4. My question would be is this acceptable? should I just clean the sensor off, should I just replace the sensor that was leaking oil or should I replace all 4? Thank you

A quick search of google will show what engines had balance shaft issues, the M273 V8s had problems with balance shaft only up to a certain serial number, mostly ended with the 2006 model year.
@studentofscience9 жыл бұрын
scene one cam is on time and one cam is not on time would that not be that the cam advance is stuck on one cam. if the cam on the left of the engine was off on both then the balance shaft teeth are gone because the chain would have more slack? the teeth where not hardened properly during manufacturing on the balance shaft. thanks for the video like it a lot.

Bonjour Do you think that without the converter the automatic BV and the flywheel we can have enough place for dismounting the plate of the cranshaft and the balance shaft and install the back part of the balance shaft and then avoid keeping out the engine ??? second why it's necessary to change the back of the balance shaft if you change the distribution chain and some other parts in the front of the engine. For me it's clear the new back part is the same like the old. Last question the sprocket lose its teeth , why it 's so important if you can adjust the timing chain for the right bank and the left bank ( admission camshaft and exhaust camshaft ) correctly. It seems to me that it's not so important that the sprocket have teeth or no because of the tensionner. I think the problem come from the tensionner. The origin adjustement is too strong so the sprocket become tired and used little by little. I hope i don't take too much of your time with my questions. best regards Pierre

I have a 2009 MB C63 AMG with 67000 miles. Few weeks ago codes P0017 and P1200 came out. These are the only codes I have. Car starts and drives perfect. No strange noises from the engine or other abnormal behavior. Besides CEL everything is fine. I also noticed that Check Engine light comes on and goes off every few days by itself. Do you think I also have a balancer problem???
@MercedesBenzTechs6 жыл бұрын
dvdmi no issues with balance shaft but you need to take to a shop that familiar with the engine and have them tight the bolts on the cams, there is only one bolt that holds the cam sprockets to the cam shaft and they get loos, at the same time I recommend they torque your head bolts too
@dvdmi6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I noticed that when it gets warmer (above 50F) CEL always goes off. Also my head bolts were replaced about 25k miles ago (preventive action).

The thing on top the engine is the transformer that sends energy to the ignition coils; the ECU engine control unit (computer) is under the fuse box.

Nope that is the ECU right on top.

Will this procedure also work to diagnose a P0025 (factory code 0064) continuous cam adjustment left bank, incorrect position of exhaust cam? Or is there a similar procedure for the left bank?

Hello Mercedes Benz Techs. Wonderfull video, thanks for it. I have a C280 Avantgarde Sport 2006, and have the same vibration problem. The car runs OK but when in neutral vibration is there. They scanned it and said was a missfire. Could missalignment be the problem? Do I always have to check for 305 degrees alignmen? Thans
@MercedesBenzTechs6 жыл бұрын
Iván Medina you need to check what causing the misfire first.. bad coil? Bad spark plug? Or out of timing? You need a professional diagnosis first

Hello David, I own a 2006 Mercedes-Benz c280. The check engine turned on and teo codes showed up at the same time (p0015,p2768). Before it turned on I felt with time how the gears were shifting rough and it was getting worse and worse until the check engine turned on. Now it is stuck in a gear, i believe this all started when i changed the engine oil. What do you think the problem could be? Thank you have a good day

I have a 2006 E350 with 153,000 miles. An original balancing shaft would not last 150,000 miles correct? Car drives and idles great. Do you believe the camshaft adjuster magnets could be the issue? I want to try the Titan oil because after I did an oil change one time the light went away (battery was not disconnected at all but the codes came back.) Besides the balancing shaft what else could be the issue?

Good video. I went out of the country for a year, my car ( c230) had not been driven for 6 months. Battery died.. I replaced it, drove for about 5 minutes, car stopped ( steering wheel got tough to steer).. car starts but will shut down in a minute. Towed it to the Dealership diagnostic test didn't show anything major wrong apart from an inconclusive test on "CAM." Dealership says it will cost me $900 for their tech to check the "Cams"... I need your recommendations? Thanks.

$900 to check the cams??? Hell no!! Takes 30 minutes! Why they need to check the cams? What year and how many miles?

Kgomotso Thelo change the camshaft solenoid or you might have a bag battery the problem is not related to your engine

Hi, I have a ML350 2006 with 100k miles. I followed your tutorial and put it to 305 degrees and one of the circles is perfectly in the middle but the other one is about 3mm/0.13 inch to the right. I did reset the check engine light but after start it was on again and it still shows the p0016 & p0017 codes. Would I have to replace the balancer or it will be fine like it is.

Thanks for sharing ! I have a 2007 c230 2.5l and this car had a service due to a camshaft gear defective , the dealer covered almost close to the total repair a few years ago After about 4,000 miles I have a code Po012 and PO0015 bank 1. I thought it could be the magnets or sensors. Do you know a way to test them , before replacing all? thank you again !

Yes sir! Cheap oil, including the Mobil 1 in my opinion! I like liquid Moly.
@mbrown70193 жыл бұрын
So, if the circles are centered, does that mean it is still in time? Is it true if the car is low on oil, with that give you a code p0016?
@mchaudry9811 Жыл бұрын
On the 2013 gl450 the cam sensors are on the top of the valve cover for bank one. I’m getting only one code p0016. Does this mean I can do the same test on my motor or will it be different?

David, I was just wondering, can this also occur on a M273 V8 or is it mainly isolated to the M272 V6?
@nelias73069 жыл бұрын
***** Thank you, good to know. I have a 2009 W221. No issues and hopefully it will never happen,but if I ever get a light and see the codes I'll know where to start
@nelias73069 жыл бұрын
***** You beat me to it! I researched the issue a bit and on mbworld.org someone had the TSB and the engine serial numbers affected: According to the TSB : Equipped with: M272 Engine Up to Serial No. 2729..30 468993 M273 Engine Up to Serial No. 2739..30 088611. The material for the balance shaft sprocket and the timing chain guide wheel (idler) was modified on engines past the serial numbers listed above. I went to epconline.com and they allow you to access it free. I put in my VIN and got my Datacard. My serial number is after the 088611. Good to go :D

David, I have this same car '06 mer ben with v6 has these same codes but runs really good. Only a little short a pickup on the highway. Can oil regularly at Jiffy Lube, their premium service. THey say it is syn oil... so not sure how good it really is. But I have not seen anything int he oil so I am guess no much in the pan. So besides the cam balancer... what else could it be. Michael
@pmiller503810 жыл бұрын
***** I am with you on doubting it will be the sensor... I still have not had the chance to look to see if it is out of alignment. But, isn't there a way to get it to past smog without having to do an overhaul? I really don't need the expense, not to mention the down time. And does the oil really make that big a difference? What is your take on the oil from Jiffy...?
@pmiller503810 жыл бұрын
***** OK Dave, I finally got the chance to check the alignment... it is good. The marks are in the center when placed at 305 degrees. So maybe in this case it may be a sensor? Oh and the oil is clean.
@pmiller503810 жыл бұрын
***** what do you mean by "both sides"? the codes are exactly the same as this video... bank 1 sensor A and B. And as per your video, you said that is on the passenger side. and as I mentioned both marks are centered. I did drop the pan and double checked for any metals, but it looks clean. Unless someone else went in there before me... lots of silicone round the pan
@pmiller503810 жыл бұрын
***** Yes I did see that video... That is why I was asking. If I can get away with not having to pull the motor, I am al for that. like I said, in checking if the marks line up, on this one it does. So just wanting to know what else it could be. Also like I said, it does look like someone has taken the pan off before, unless the dealer uses silicone to seal. But if that was the case, why would they clean out the pan and not tell anyone of the problem? Metal in the pan is a bad thing and should not be ignored. By the way, how do I test for the sensors? I am sure there is a way to test them.

I have a 2006 c230 & have just gotten these 2 codes (P0016 & P0017). We just changed the oil with the Mobil 1 synthetic oil & the codes still appear after being cleared as you mentioned they may. Previously, I received 2 codes (P1200 & P1208) which appear to be very similar codes. Can you recommend if I should get this work done or just invest in another car? Or, do you have any other suggestions that I'm not considering? My car seems to be running very "rough" & I don't want to get stuck in LAX traffic. Thank you very much!
