Rebuilt Mercedes 300TD Wagon Engine - Rare - How Can You Tell?

The engine is for sale: mercedessource... I picked up this 1982 wagon that was too rusty to restore. The owner said he had the engine rebuilt just before parking it. Let's take a close look at this turbodiesel engine to see If the story is true.

I was watching some of his other highly monetised videos and noticed that "Magic Paint" for rust repairs is really just POR15, so you don't need to buy his relabelled product, just get POR 15.

People sometimes ask me why I turn the comments off. For those who want to know here is a perfect example. People would read this comment and probably believe it was true, but if fact it is misleading and not even factual. In the first place it is not Magic Paint. It is called Miracle Paint manufactured by a completely different company. I used POR 15 for over 10 years before I discovered this product. This is a far better product as I have been able to test it over a 15 year period. It has better long term adhesion to rust and the heavy duty formula will not drip all over the ground like POR 15 does. They both put out obnoxious fumes while drying but POR 15 is worse and if you try to accelerate the drying time POR 15 will crinkle. So know you know... :-)

Congratulations on your videos! Very interesting! I have a 1979 Mercedes 300D which sometimes gives me problems, but with your videos, I have been able to solve them. However, two days ago I found too much oil in the air filter!! I don't understand what happened because I haven't lost power, no black smoke and it turns on normally in the morning. I am looking for how to solve it or at least know the reasons for what happened. I hope you can make a tutorial on this problem and help us all. Thanks and greetings from Peru!

If you have a two line vacuum pump with one line going into the air filter housing oil might be getting into your air filter from a failing vacuum pump.

IMHO this looks like a perfect engine that should be DRY ICED detailed.

If you or the customer is willing to pay for it and can actually find someone with a dryice blaster and have a truck to can bring it to them, sure. A dry ice blaster is way out of the reach of most people and shops. I've looked into it. A commercial grade dry ice blaster with hopper/compressor and wiring/power to it is minimum a $20,000-30,000 investment.

I went to buy a 240d and was told engine was rebuilt. But there were no maintenance records, and frankly it was all covered in oil so I was like… yeahhh no thanks.

I've got a half rebuilt (block) om617.. been in my container fur 15 years. New pistons, liners, water pump, rebuilt injector pump.. me monarch injectors. The car in the paddock had t reconditioned head and been driven only about it 15,000km with that.. I just never had the time to finish it.

I have a 1990 300d Automatic. I was revving it in park and heard a pop sound. I cant get it to go in gear now. Shift linkage is good.

If fluid level is ok then suspect your transmission is broken internally.

I generally consider "rebuilt" in description for a negative. Its either a lie or a quick teardown and replacement of random parts and quick throw-together with no measurements on anything

One question, how many types of OM617 are there? I have one that has the oil filter at the bottom and it is also 5 cylinders.

The OM617 was available from 1975 to 1985 in four chassis in the US market. 1975 to 1976 in the W115 as a non-turbo with the oil filter down low. 1978 to 1980 in the W116 as a turbo engine. 1977 to 1981 in the W123 chassis sedan and coupes as a non-turbo engine. 1982 to 1985 in the W123 chassis as a turbo engine.(including the 1981 W123 300TD wagon).
