That moment in the last chorus, when he opens his eyes, before 'night'... It's painful to watch. But the beauty in the voice... Why is there so much beauty, so much exceptional art, born out of pain and sadness?

Kurt joked about asking David Geffen (Geffen Records) to buy him Leadbelly's guitar for $500K in 1993. The guitar Kurt is playing sold at auction for $6M in 2020.

Kurt was very humble, I think such an intimate venue made him nervous.

It has been mentioned that this is a cover of a song. The song has several versions, besides Kurt’s version, the most famous is of course, Leadbelly’s version. In American culture, especially in the 1950’s , earlier, coffins were generally made of pine. A simple “pine box” often refers to coffins. Also, in the language, earlier, “to pine” for someone meant that you missed them to the point of sickness. “What is wrong with her?”, “Oh, she is still pinning after him”.

Beautiful song, a cover song. Most of the songs on that unplugged show were covers. Gave a great insight into Kurt's taste and influences. The Bowie song, The Man Who Sold The World, was the highlight of that performance.

I think people don't remember his dreadful stomach pains he suffered. He wrote the song Pennyroyal Tea about this. I don't discount this regular unbearable physical pain he went through on a daily basis, couple with missing his daughter, with a drug addled mind and a gun beside him, it may have seemed like the greatest pain relief. We should celebrate his work, he was a truly exceptional artist.

Agree with you about the song's evocatively dark sadness. It's strange how many people so who were so incredibly talented ended up putting themselves where the sun don't ever shine by their own hand.

@@timlenard1646 That was the first auction. "Kurt Cobain's guitar from Nirvana's iconic MTV Unplugged performance sold at auction...for a record $6 million. The previous record was $3.95 million for a Black Stratocaster owned by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour." (Source: Rolling Stone, 2020). It was subsequently sold again: "The ultra-rare acoustic was purchased, with a bid of $6,010,000, by Australian businessman and RØDE Microphones owner Peter Freedman during the Julien's Auctions Music Icons auction held in Beverly Hills, CA. Mar 28, 2022". Sounds like investment buyers, so who knows how much more it will bring over time. I wish someone who loved and respected Kurt / Nirvana would buy it, but that's probably wishful thinking.

Not to mention, his green cardigan, which he is wearing in this video, sold for $334,000 in a 2019 auction at the New York auction house Julien's - it was the second time that the sweater had been sold.

It's very interesting to watch your reactions. I feel like one can see Dominika thinking, catching every little nuance in the music and the lyrics, while Andrei is more in his feelings. Yet when it comes to their commentary, it sort of evens out. Anyway, as Andrei might say "I don't know, I don't know" - I just think this couple has a remarkable and beautiful connection. That said, another excellent reaction. Music is almost the only thing keeping me going; I do suffer the "daily drudgery of depression" and have for almost all of my life. Another artist you might want to check out is Chris Cornell, specifically "Seasons" - live (acoustic) on YT. Or the official video, but I tend to prefer live performances. Also his cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares to You". He is another who took his life. Unrelenting depression is brutal - but these are beautiful performances. Best wishes to you both, kf.

Has anyone mentioned that this song is from the early 50s recorded originally by Lead Belly? "In the Pines". This isn't Nirvana's original. The pain in the song, as one can imagine, is what (I'm sure) touched Cobain. It can be interpretated in many ways IMO. Great reaction.

He was suffering mental health issues on top of being addicted to Heroin which is horrible. And some people end their lives as there is no hope! It can get very bad messing with that stuff. You realise you will never be as happy and also you suffer a lot. It takes a toll whether you are on it or sober. As one will slowly kill you and the other will make you wanna rip your hair out. I guess there is hope to some degree but it can be very hard to see that hope. And some people which are not mentally strong will break!

Kurt was so uncomfortable being praised and idolized. He is disconnected from the "star" image that is imposed upon him. That comes through in his voice and songs, that he embraces humanity without having to embrace every human individually. The stardom pressure and pedestal that Nirvana was place so quickly gave him a PTSD from the culture shock, of being an introverted young man thrust into fame X 100.
