Rediscovering these songs that I know inside and out having listened, played and sung them since they came out, is just mind blowing and is often deeply emotional for me. I find myself often overwhelmed by emotions, core memories coming back to the surface, finding new meanings in this musical and literal poetry. Powerful testament to TOOL's genius. And thinking that a lot of people are listening to these songs for the first time is almost a source of jealousy but mainly happiness. Thanks for that. 🌀

"Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion ... between supposed lovers ..." is my favourite lyric from any Tool song ever. Because it contains the whole history of my last relationship. We stopped communicating, lost the ability for it, and when we got into an argument neither of us wanted to listen, to give the other a space to talk. We stopped having compassion, then we broke up. To this day it hurts my soul to have lost Pia, I still love her so much and this song reminds me that you have to grow and care for communication. That is what the song is about.

Tool lyrics can be interpreted very personally. Different for every listener. There's no church connection in this song for me. To me it's about a relationship between lovers that is crumbling because there's no communication between the two people. Never be afraid to apply your own interpretation to a song, especially with Tool. Whatever you think it means is what it means.

@MR2GR Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I can't understand why people want to interpret this as a song talking about churches, 1. Maynard isn't religious, so a song about Christian churches splitting and shit does not feel very on brand. 2 towards the end the lyrics "between supposed lovers" pretty much seals it for me that it's about two people, who are in a relationship. I love what you said about it.
@rnrweb1968 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree!! I always thought the same! I really do not know how Maynard explained the lyrics but the pieces fit, ha ha, that it's about 2 lovers losing communication.

Got to see these guys at a music festival near my home town in early to mid-1990's, well before they were a Blockbuster band. I don't think the Undertow album had released yet when I caught their show for the first time. I've since been to a handful of their shows. Catch one of their shows if you have the opportunity. Stage production is maybe the closest you can get to the stage production of a Pink Floyd show. The music is groovy but the lyrics are what have always held my interest. Wonderful, intellectual, and often introspective lyrics.

I love basically everything from the band's catalog, but Schism, Pneuma, and Lateralus are kind of the holy trinity of Tool for me personally. Great reaction! I have subscribed! As a long time tool fan, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend watching Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days (it’s a two-part song) in the same reaction video. Definitely continue using lyric videos, I really believe you will connect with the lyrics… they relate to his mother and are probably the most emotional and touching lyrics Maynard has written for Tool. Thanks again for your entertaining reaction! Much love from Scotland 🏴 ❤

You two are the best. TooL has always wanted people to think and feel. It’s okay that they effect you. That’s the plan. If they didn’t care they would release music all the time. They haven’t ever done that because unless it’s worth doing they don’t do it.

I love watching you react to my favourite band. I know that it can be hard to put into words just how their music makes you feel but that's alright. I'm a lifelong fan and sometimes words escape me when trying to describe them to other people. Tool's music creates a state of mind, a feeling. It touches your soul and reaches in to something primal and wordless deep within your being. I'm actually happy you two aren't rushing through their entire discography. Too many channels blow through their music in a month or two. Or less. I look forward to the next one but take your time. Spiral out at your own rhythm.

I apologize for not knowing your names! But I just wanted to say this: I’m a 76 year old American woman. I discovered Tool during lock-down when I did a deep dive into KZbin reaction channels and started discovering whole new genres of music that I had ignored in my 40’s-60’s. The biggest discoveries we’re Nightwish, Aurora, grunge as a genre, and Tool. Schism was actually the first song I heard by Tool..along with The Pot and Pneuma. But like the lady here, I love their creativity so much and appreciate their skill so much, but I cannot listen to more than 3-4 songs in a row because, just like her, it gets me agitated and nervous. It’s very “busy” and frenetic music and demands full attention. I thought it was just a matter of my age, but I’m glad to see that younger people also have this reaction! This doesn’t stop me from thinking they are one of the best bands out there,…….although I could never survive a concert! 😁😉😏

The song title is kinda onomatopoeic, in that the time-signature itself is 12/8 but split unevenly into 5/8, 7/8 - a literal schism.

Chalk this one up to the possible multiple interpretations of the lyrics of Tool... I always connected this to the split between Christianity and Islam, using a 'relationship' as the metaphor to deliver the message. I was delving deep into this song when the twin towers in NYC were hit by planes flown by terrorists. The pieces all sorta fit!

I think its about the fall of rome based on the church level. The schism between the western catholic empire and the eastern orthodox empire. I think the line about "the dangers of a second guessing" refers to the Martin Luther separation from the catholic/holy Roman empire. Now the catholic church isn't as powerful as they once were and it makes me think of that line "watch the temple topple over".

Allot of native English speakers do not know some of the vocabulary used by Maynard. In this song, Juxtaposition for example. As some Americans would say, “that’s a college word”. Even “atrophy”. As non-native English speakers, I wouldn’t expect you to know those words. Heaven knows how a translation program would handle “juxtaposition”. 😁 Most Lyricists do not communicate at that level.
