It's about the lyrics it's about addictions and he I'd the voice physically showing you what he's singing.
@rj.w.5069 Жыл бұрын
He's singing as the addict in the first verse. Body language is begging and the vocals are begging "why can't we just be sober". In the second verse he's singing as the addiction that's afflicting and destroying him. The vocals are much more aggressive, "i will find a center in you, i will chew it up and leave", "i will elevate you just enough to bring you down", "why can't we NOT be sober (wanting to be inebriated). In the third verse.. he's singing as both.. same words with different meanings, "I want what i want" the addiction wanting to chew up the person more, and the addict wanting more poison. Both wanting for each other. One begging for reprieve, the other celebrating the destruction of a person. Powerful. The body language is amazing. Unbelievable song and performance.

Tool can make you feel uncomfortable and I'm pretty sure that is quite intentional. They don't back away from stuff. This song makes me want to cry. It captures so well the desperation, anger and frustration of addiction. The last section, "I want what I want", really takes me back to those days and the compulsion I used to feel. Been clean for 9 years now but it never hurts to be reminded. I think you are right - Tool grows on you.
@FrostedVanity2 жыл бұрын
Just wanted to tell you: Keep it up! Being sober is so much better! I too have been clean for 9 years. It's so much easier to be clean, than to be an addict! For me it was just a personal choice, easily the smartest one anyone captured in the thralls addiction can make. 💖

Well put. Maynard has a way to just belting out the inner thoughts that we keep hidden in the shadows of our minds. All the fears, anger and anxieties we suppress in our conscious mind, he drags to the front and puts them on display. The band of course, plays with this too sonically with complex time signatures, polyrhythms and sonic dissonance that adds to the uncomfortable and tense feelings. And congrats on your sobriety - I know how hard that can be.

Well, Tool have been around for over 30 years, so yeah, they've been here for quite some time. Tool has a very very big fan base (you can even say they're a cult band), they fill out stadiums regularly and have several platinum albuns (their last album knocked Taylor Swift of the number one position), but they were never a mainstream band.. You are correct in your assessemnt, Tool is really not a band for begginers and it's one of those bands that the more you listen and the more you discover, the more you'll like them. This son you ust reacted is from their first album and this footage is from a concert in 1994, so yeah, it is quite old. Hope you keep enjoying and discovering them.

The lyrics are more than just skin deep. Maynard is a very well read and intellectual person and so are his lyrics. If you don't have the lyrics to read while listening you should at least read them beforehand.

10:00 - You could say that Tool is an "acquired taste". They use alot of polyrhythms and Maynard's lyrics can be a bit confusing but they most definately offfer you an ride with every song if you are willing to open your third eye and spiral out. ;) I would love to see and hear you go through the entire Tool discography from the first EP "Opiate" from 1992 to the latest album "Fear Inoculum" (2019) and ending with Opiate² that they re-made for it's 30th "birthday". :) IF you decide to take the deep dive, there are some short transitions but also songs that are to be listened back to back like "Intermission" and "Jimmy" (Ænima), "Parabol" and "Parabola" (Lateralus), "Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman)" and "Rosetta Stoned" (10,000 days), "Wings for Marie (Pt 1)" and "10,000 days (Wings Pt2)" on (10,000 days). Also on the album Lateralus there is the so called "Holy Trinity" consisting the songs "Disposition", "Reflection" and "Triad" and they also should be listened back-to-back. Luckily they have all their songs available on KZbin, below are the links to each albums playlists. :) Opiate (1992): kzbin.info/aero/PLESF6Vbm19P0BenMCcS-_JdyWRUN60TKI Undertow (1993): kzbin.info/aero/PLESF6Vbm19P0GRGiSs9oYKy7RvwPE9ugF Ænima (1996) playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLESF6Vbm19P0zA2eNuAZndytJPH9XOxxc Lateralus (2001) playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLESF6Vbm19P2IGN0wvksh-SYVWWj4lrxN 10,000 Days (2006) playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLESF6Vbm19P2zMbYA_RJfVkRTYI-QKnL3 Fear Inoculum (2019) playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLESF6Vbm19P3U4iPQ_coFr6MtTX92HxyR And finally, the latest song from TOOL, "Opiate²": kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYqalKKcq9mVmdE Since this is such an task, I do understand if you decide not to go through all this. But it would give you such an great view to the band and how they have evolved during these past 30 years. :)

Tool is definitely an acquired taste for many (most?) people. But once you start acclimating yourself to their style, they're just amazing. Musically and lyrically they go deeper than almost any others out there. They're truly special.
@sharilynbratton64762 жыл бұрын
You guys are really starting to get the deeper aspects behind Tool! You should try The Pot for a more straightforward banger that talks about hypocrisy in our courts about drug sentences, also 46&2 is a great song, hard power chords but also a great look into Carl Jung's philosophy about the shadow self and Tool taking it a step further up the evolutionary ladder. There are two songs that must be played together, Parabol and Parabola, that I think the missus will like, the lyrics are very straightforward but also have a great message. I am a 60 year old mom and retired preschool teacher from Texas, and I have loved Tool since they started; but it's only been in the last 7 years or so that I really began to shift focus from enjoying mainly just the music and the crazy polyrhythms to absorbing the actual lyrics and themes of the different albums. My appreciation of this band grew exponentially when that light bulb clicked on in my consciousness, and I have to add that the death of my only son in 2015 sent me into such deep grief and depression but for some reason Tool was the band that spoke to and helped heal my broken spirit most in the first 2 years after Daniel died. My deeply religious sister turns to hymns and Christian songs when troubled or grieving, and I turn more toTool, ha; so is Tool MY 'religion'? Not exactly, but my son was a practicing Buddhist and I think many of Tool's lyrics remind me of his own sentiments about human nature and a philosophy for humanity's highest good that my son and I always loved to discuss for hours.

The complexities is what draws me to bands like Tool and Jinjer.With Tool some people start with their song The Pot and hoping you get to the audio version soon and I’ll predict it will become your favorite as alot say your favorite is the last song you hear from them lol
@ElgynsToy2 жыл бұрын
You're correct; with Tool, Maynard's vocals are generally more back in the mix and that's a creative decision. Maynard himself is rarely up front in live shows (this one is an exception) as he sees himself as another instrument rather than a front man. Funny, given that he's such an incredible performer; this clip being a prime example. The song is about a friend of the band who felt they couldn't create while they were sober, and Maynard is essentially playing that role. Anyhoo, not to steer you away from Tool at all, but Maynard also works with two other bands you might like to check out (also world class musicians ; ) A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. Same lyrical genius and excellent production, slightly different styles : )
@coustryemmanuel16312 жыл бұрын
About A Perfect Circle, "Eat the Elephant" is a pure masterpiece and I think "Mer de Noms", their first record, is the best album released during the year 2000. Hope you'll give a try to this amazing band.
@tattoodude89462 жыл бұрын
Good call. Maynard really makes a conscious effort to blend his vocals in such a way that they become just another instrument in the band in spite of the fact that his lyricism is amazing. In the early days of Tool, they did the standard band positioning as it was just what you do, but as the band grew in popularity he started hanging out in the back. Ironically, he had terrible stage fright in the early days when he was out front on the stage and since then (and after years of being out there) he has gotten better with that aspect just in time to stick himself in the back with Danny! The stage fright is also one of the reasons he seems so zoned out in his early performances. He would pick a spot in the crowd and just sing to that one spot rather than look at the mass of people staring at him. It is a classic stage fright technique. He would do the same even in smaller venues like the 1996 Glass House or the 1992 Philadelphia shows. I always thought in those smaller venues: I would hate to be in his eyeline for the show! That piercing, empty stare as he screams at you with that much energy? 🥶
@jimwilson55452 жыл бұрын
7empest was not a good place to start, but depending on your preferences there might not be a good place. Though I would love for you to listen to parabol and parabola (all in one go), check out the album version. Or 10000 days. Tool is one of my all time favs.

TOOL are zero catchy. I had known them for a while because all my friends who played instruments loved them. I could not understand why, but once accompanied them to a concert. That was in 2007. I've been obsessed ever since. There's nothing like them, and the amazing thing is that after all these years, even though I know every song by heart, every time I listen to them with headphones I still discover something new that I've never noticed before. The only definition I could give them is MONUMENTAL.

Yeah the volume of the vocals are on purpose. Maynard and the band hand in hand telling a story. It is a "Tool" for you to use and find your own meaning. How does the song speak to you? It is meant to have multiple meanings. Enjoy!!!

If you're considering a follow-up, I would highly recommend Parabol/Parabola (two separate tracks meant to be played in succession). It's very different than either of the two songs you've reacted to thus far, yet shares so many of Tool's unique characteristics. But I'd advise you to avoid their music videos on first listens because they are extremely weird and distracting. Focus first on the audio and then circle back to the videos if you're curious.
