You never know what inspires a melody. Harry Nilsson said that the constant beep-beep-beep of the dial tone while trying to complete a phone call inspired this song. Listen to the beginning of this and you can hear it.

One frustration of the music from this generation is that the radio stations wanted songs around 2 1/2 minutes to fit their format. In the early 70's the new FM stations were willing to play longer songs. I remember when a local station (FM) played their first "long" single. It was "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly. This is when the music exploded into new spaces.

Everyone really should listen to Nillson's version of this song. He wrote it. Such a shame how Harry Nillson is all but forgotten these days when he was such a giant talent. John and Paul both said Nillson was their favorite singer. He refused to play live but the BBC talked him into sorta doing a live show in their studio. Can watch it here on KZbin. WELL worth the watch

The opening of that show combined two songs, video available on KZbin. Harry Nillson-"Mr Richland's Favorite Song/One 1971.. It's eminently sad, more so then Three Dog Night's version.. (The two songs here first made their appearance on Harry's 1968 album (and his 2nd album for RCA), "Aerial Ballet." "Mr. Richland's..." tells the story of a musician who goes from rags to riches and back to rags again as a has-been. "One," of course, was covered by Three Dog Night, who took the song to #1 on the US charts in 1969.)

All Rock music is based on the Blues. The blues are intended to have you listen to someone elses troubles and forget about (or relate...empathize) your own troubles for moment. Rock took it further by using a joyful noise to go along with the sadness to also lift the listener up (such as dancing). "tis better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all."

Oh my dears...Three Dog Night was amazing !... here's just a partial list of their work..feel free to try a few or all of them and more 😁... 💥... Eli's Coming...1969 💥...Never Been To Spain...1971 💥...An Old Fashioned Love Song...1971 💥...Easy To Be Hard...1969..(💚) 💥...Try A Little Tenderness...1968 In places of extreme cold..folks would measure how cold it was by the number of dogs let to sleep in the structure or bed for added warmth...in this case vocalist Danny Hutton had read an article about indigenous Australians who on cold nights would sleep in dugout holes and add the dogs depending on the cold and again 3 dogs on extremely cold nights... The band broke up in 1975 saying "they had strayed from their original concept"...an abbreviated group still tours 80 shows yearly but only with one original band member having passed away in 2014..and reportedly only one original member still in the band... Thank you for your interest in this outstanding group of fine young men... 🌿🌿🌿

You’ll have fun with TDN! You should do all of their 21 top 40 hits! Chuck Negron was the tallest dude with the big moustache, the clean tenor and the great falsetto. Corey Wells is more soul, and is the lead guy on Shambala, Mama Told Me Not to Come, and Never Been to Spain. Danny Hutton did Black & White, but didn’t front many of their hits… but they rotated lead vocal on Out in the Country (a great song!), & Celebrate which is also wonderful.

A band that had The same vibes as TDN with a little more of a rock feel was Grand Funk Railroad. They were in the time frame, 67-72, and could be relied on to put out a hit every 6-8 months. I'M YOUR CAPTAIN was their biggest hit, very similar to TDN in instrumentation and vocal style. Brings back those late 60s grooves.
