Three Dog Night had TWENTY ONE top 40 hits in a 5 year period!! That's a 40 year career for some. That's unattainable for most. These guys were a hit machine. They had 4 or 5 singers that took, shared and changed the lead. Only the Eagles have that level of versatility. I have a lot of faves, but my all-time favorite is OUT IN THE COUNTRY. When you consider this song was written in 1954 and this particular cover was done in 1972, I think it makes it that much more meaningful. I was 7 years old when this version was released and it had quite an impact on me. I think that it peaked at number one the charts was telling as well. This video was really cute, but even without it this song makes me smile.

I was 8 when this came out in 1972 and I didn't think twice about it being a message, because why would anyone need this message? It just seemed normal to me that everyone is the same, even though I was in a small town that was primarily white. A few years later in school, I learned about the history of discrimination and was horrified! I thank my mom for encouraging and instilling the intrinsic moral and ethical values that seemed like second nature to me; not yet having discovered any societal influences. You are both correct - ADULTS probably need this message the most, so they can lead by example as moral and ethical humanitarians who influence children.

I'm 66 yrs now and I think I was 13 or 14 when Three Dog Night came out and the drummer is a 'black brother ' and I was told then that he walked with part of his drumset to the audition over a hundred miles away and wether it's true or not...he got the position. I started a drummer at that age and listened to his soulful beats learning it on the kit at the after school center. Alot of bands like this just came out of nowhere at the time and in particular a band from Canada called The Guess Who. These two came out with hits left and right. There were so much Rock Bands especially after Woodstock! Peace be with you!!!

Yeah, we sang this in school forty years ago. We were taught what Martin Luther King Jr. espoused: To judge one another by the content of our character and not the color of our skin. This nation has been on an upward trajectory towards racial harmony and understanding for many decades. Now teachers and schools teach kids that it's not your character that counts but the color of your skin and with whom you identify. They, along with corrupt, feckless and quite frankly soulless and evil politicians and media outlets are perpetuating racial division and hate for nothing more than power and profit.

Growing up in a small town, we had one black family who had two boys. One was my best friend. We all knew that his skin color was different...that's all we knew. Didn't matter. Our Little Rascals Gang was White/Hispanic/Native/Black. We didn't know anyone was different. Somewhere that message has been misplaced. Yes, to this day...50 years later we all stay in touch.

We sang this in 1st grade music class in Newark nj catholic school 1970 . At least we tried to while the record player played the 3 dog night 45 record. As I grew older I was told about the 1967 race riots in Newark nj. I never noticed that, of course I was 4 . 🤔😆👈 we weren't allowed to play outside, But the message was being taught to the kids.

To add some background; Black & White was written by David Arkin & Earl Robinson, in 1954, to celebrate the US Supreme Court decision in Brown vs Board of Education, ending segregation in public schools. Pete Seeger 1st released it in 1956. The original includes a verse later left out (to make it less specifically about the court decision & more about unity in general); "Their robes were black, their heads were white. The schoolhouse doors were closed so tight. Nine judges all set down their names, to end the years and years of shame."

This is the music I grew up with in my teen years. Three Dog Night was great. My favorite band was Sly and the Family Stone. I have had friends from all different races and ethnic backgrounds. I worked in the most diverse school in my state. The teenagers all got along. Then something happened around 2010 and now I don't recognize our country. I believe we will get back to just seeing people as who they are and not what boxes they check on a form.

I had a family friend who drove my Elementary school bus. We would be singing this and Joy to The World on the bus. I did not know it then but he was a minister. I graduated with his son. He was this kind of Rock Minister back in the early 70's. He was a very loving and caring man. He passed a little over a year ago, but this is one song that stays in my heart. Three Dig Night was THE last 'hippie' band of that era. This song came out in 1972. I was a nere lad if 12 and it impacted me in such a positive way. My single-digit years were the 1960s during all the racial riots and turmoil. As a little kid, I couldn't understand it all. This song just put so many things in perspctive

Civil rights was a huge issue at the time this was recorded and to drive home the message of the song they used a children’s choir to sing the background vocals. Three Dog Night had 3 lead singers: Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron and Cory Wells. Hutton was featured on this. Sorry I missed the 100,000 subscriber party, congratulations. I am sad, however, that it's been around 50 years now and all those songs from the 1970s that sang about a new hope for erasing racism and ending wars have not come true. I think we are making progress with the racism...but it's going sooo slow - and as for war...I am beginning to think that will never cease. Should have been in hall of fame 30 years ago, great band that dominated the airwaves and charts from 68-75! They played pop, country and blues and rocked in concert! Three different lead singers all great and a fantastic band of GREAT musicians and I think the first American band with a Black member, the Drummer the incomparable Floyd Sneed!! I spent 28 years teaching Elementary school. I can tell you right now that children of all different nationalities races religions come in the school building and they are best friends. They play together they play on Little League teams together . They don't look at each other as different They're all first graders or third graders or fifth graders. Racism and hatred starts at home with adults. It doesn't help that our nation is also so divided politically right now. I just feel sorry for the children because if we would just leave them alone and follow their example What a wonderful World this would be. This message came out during a time where we were trying to heal from segregation. And we didn't have a video to go with it but I got the message and a whole lot of people got the message and agreed with it. It was somewhat of an anthem for my generation.

This song came out after the crazy sixties when I experienced racial problems as a youngster, and our neighborhoods started to become separated, as children we didn’t understand why? We had friends and neighbors of all colors! BJ is right unity in the community! It is up to us black, white, people of all colors to make it not matter!
