Before the sixties, bands and singers didn't usually write and perform their own songs. There were songwriters, and there were performing artists. The success of The Beatles (and others, such as Bob Dylan) changed all that. Three Dog Night wasn't a "cover band", they were just a holdover that was still following the old ways. During this time you also saw songwriters pivoting into singer/songwriter careers (think Carole King, Randy Newman, Harry Nillson, Neil Diamond) in order to stay relevant-not to mention employed.

While TDN covered other artists' songs, they always fought against ever being labeled a "cover band", because unlike other "cover/tribute bands", who try to faithfully recreate the original sound and thus stay in the past (which isn't a bad thing if that's what you'rel ooking for), TDN *always* made their own arrangements, putting their own unique spin on songs--and thereby took songs that may not have charted well in their original release and turned them into monster hits.

I was 12 and had no idea we were growing up in such an amazing time for music. All I knew was the radio and the 69 cent 45's at the record shop churned out new stuff week by week that was mesmerizing. I mowed lawns and turned in pop bottles at 2 cents each to buy them. I probably still have several hundred 45's in a case in the basement

I checked out the original Harry Nilsson song "One" and it does stand on it's on. I grew up a big Three Dog Night fan, but the Nilsson version, although different in it's simplicity, is well worth a listen. Three Dog Night, Doobie Brothers, Beatles, etc.. I'm so glad I grew up in the 60s and 70s.

Phonetic associations and puns, love it, been there. "Eli's Coming" Soundstage 1975 is my favorite. Speaking of Nilsson, "Me and My Arrow" from the animated movie "The Point" 1971.

Eli's Coming...live. That's what should be your next Three Dog Night song. Three lead singers, all fantastic.

Three Dog Night could be called a "cover band", of course, but they're a cover band that made a lot of songwriters a ton of money!

This song is an example of what makes them special: the ability to take someone else's song and do it better. Whoever is responsible for their arrangements is a genius.

Funny story. My now 30 yr old son loves them- begged to go see them when he was about 7 . We went. He’s slumped back in his seat, just watching the first few songs- they hit the first notes of this and he bolts up in his seat. He turned to me and my rarely serious kids says, “THIS is why I came.”

In the long ago summer of '69, at old Mile-High Stadium in Denver, we had a " Denver Rock Festival "x 2 days . 3 Dog Night were the 2nd to last group., & they were great. This song was their closing number. As it happened, iron Butterfly were the final group, & as they started playing------------THAT'S when the Denver cops began to tear gas the stadium., attempt to arrest everyone, & I & my 2 friends, & our dates, all escaped through a fenced gate at the farthest end of the stadium ! We just mad it out, as the riot began . People were fighting cops, dogs, tear gas, & gawd knows what else ! it all turned into a full scale riot, because cops decided the smell of MJ made EVERYONE there, guilty ! No one was killed, but several were seriously hurt. It was a disaster for the DPD, & one I don't believe they ever recovered from. of interest to me, one of my grade school--------Jr high & high school antagonists was now on DPD, busting heads . His name was Buckley Stewart , & he WAS made to be a cop.---------MJL, 77 y/o

This is quite possibly the greatest cover band of all time. Definitely check out Nilsson's version...it's tonally very different (more melancholy) but also amazing.

Great song. Famously covered by Bob, Will and Carlton's cellmate in Fresh Prince

I was second row right up front to see them in the early 70’s. That was a great show. The guy that played The Wizard with them was Skip Conte. He and a friend did Ride, Captain, Ride while in Blues Image. It was only one of two acts that I snuck in a camera and got pictures.
