Before the sixties, bands and singers didn't usually write and perform their own songs. There were songwriters, and there were performing artists. The success of The Beatles (and others, such as Bob Dylan) changed all that. Three Dog Night wasn't a "cover band", they were just a holdover that was still following the old ways. During this time you also saw songwriters pivoting into singer/songwriter careers (think Carole King, Randy Newman, Harry Nillson, Neil Diamond) in order to stay relevant-not to mention employed.

While TDN covered other artists' songs, they always fought against ever being labeled a "cover band", because unlike other "cover/tribute bands", who try to faithfully recreate the original sound and thus stay in the past (which isn't a bad thing if that's what you'rel ooking for), TDN *always* made their own arrangements, putting their own unique spin on songs--and thereby took songs that may not have charted well in their original release and turned them into monster hits.
