" These times are so uncertain, there's a yearning undefined, and people filled with rage. We all need a little tenderness, how can love survive in such a graceless age." It was so true in 1989... exponentially more true in 2024

A favorite of mine. Don wrote this song along with J.D. Souther and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty fame. Don said of the song that it took 30 years to write and 4 minutes to sing

One of my favorites from this period. I loved Don Henley’s solo work in the 80’s. The 80’s saw successful solo careers by many members of famous bands: Don Henley, Phil Collins (Genesis) Robert Plant (Zeppelin) Ozzy Ozborne (Black Sabbath) Steve Winwood (Traffic) Dave Mason (Traffic) Sting ( The Police) to name some of them.

His voice has a way of making you feel melancholy and definitely reflecting on everything. Don Henley is a master of that.

One of Don Henley’s finest pieces from his solo work post-Eagles. Brilliant album that features many phenomenal songs, including The End Of The Innocence, I Will Not Go Quietly (with Axl Rose), The Last Worthless Evening and New York Minute. A truly adult album released in a time where music was changing. He’s an amazing lyricist and his timeless voice always finds a way to touch your soul.

This song still brings my ex fiance to my mind. i was just finishing basic training in army and she broke our engagement. I was crushed and this song was just making it big. Life turned out to the wonderful marriage i have now but the feelings from those days were very real and still occupy a small crevasse in my soul. The great news is my wife shapes my world and also my ex-fiance contacted me many years ago to say she regrets her choices so i am sad for her. So this song is like many others...a piece of the soundtrack to my life. Don Henley is world class song writer.

Of course I've heard this before, but now that I hear it again, it sounds like a confession and a request for forgiveness for past transgressions. Sad and tender at the same time. Thanks for giving me a chance to hear it again. 👍

This is one of my favorite songs of all time that has flown under the radar for far too long. Its extremely profound. It deals with one of the profoundest concepts that there is..."the flesh will get weak, and the ashes will scatter so I'm thinking about, forgiveness".
@scottrbloom5 ай бұрын
Something of a specialty for Don Henley, how he contrasts something deeply personal with something more universal or even political. A brilliant lyricist in many ways. He really hit his stride the last couple of albums with the Eagles, but his solo work Building the Perfect Beast and Heart of the Matter. In songs like The End of the Innocence he really shows off his ability to talk about something nostalgic then spread that to a big international political protest, and then back to the personal. He makes you think about the world in a personal way.

Don Henley had a lot of great songs on his solo albums. Boys of Summer is probably most well known, my favorite. Of course, you could go a whole different direction and react to Mojo Nixon's "Don Henley Must Die", Mojo's always good for a laugh. Henley got up and sang it with him live once, nice attitude.

Henley wrote the lyrics with J.D. Souther, who was a frequent collaborator with the Eagles. The song is about a man who finds out his former lover has found someone else, which is exactly what they were both going through at the time. In our interview with J.D. Souther, he explained: "At that particular moment it was an easy song for both of us to work on, because we had both, within the last year or so, broken up with our fiancées. They had both taken up with somebody else and that's not easy to hear. The line "The flesh will get weak and the ashes will scatter" is a biblical reference, coming from Matthew 26:41: "The spirit is willing enough, but the flesh is weak." Peace out

I'm not sure who provided the lyrics, but a good many of them were incorrect. So it helps to be able to listen closely, because Henley enunciates his words pretty well.
