From Don's 3rd solo album, "The End of the Innocence", this is a beautiful lyrical song with such soothing instrumentation. Mike Campbell, Tom Petty's guitarist cut the track at home, and played it for Henley. He previously co-wrote " Boys of Summer" with Don, so obviously they had a great working relationship. Don wrote some words with J D. Souther and changed the key to suit him. They both had suffered some love loss, so I think the lyrics did come from "the heart of the matter". The vocals are so beautiful, so magical in their delivery along with the lovely melody. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Cathy. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Henley has that gorgeous honey throated growl, but Randy Meisner sang the lead vocal on, "Take It to the Limit". Sadly Meisner passed not too long ago. Imho he put the Eagles on the map with TTTL. " Heart of the the Matter", speaks to the resignation of the end of the love affair. You're right Harri...this song speaks to us all, anyone who has loved, and lost.

My wife cheated on me and we're getting a divorce. I have had this song on infinite replay on Spotify. I've been listening to this song for 30 years, and it's only now that the lyrics actually hold meaning for me, and I wasn't sure why. You hit the nail on the head ... we continue to love those who've hurt us. I hurt her back and she says she doesn't love me any more and doesn't ever want to see me again. But I will still forgive her ... even if she doesn't love me any more.

I think one key line is " and the work I put between us, you know it doesn't keep me warm " shows that, whatever happened, he feels a measure of responsibility for her not loving him anymore. And now, true forgiveness will allow them both to move forward and find happiness in the years yet to come. Even if she doesn't love him anymore.

In the same vein and even more powerful is Springsteen’s Brilliant Disguise. The album was basically about his marriage falling apart. The video of this single was just him with his guitar in his kitchen so emblematic of a person going through that tragedy. Like most Springsteen’s song, there are a few classic lines that will last through time. “god have mercy…”

To me his finest solo dingle outside the Eagles, along with Boys of Summer!!! Don's voice is so jazzy, bluesy, smoky joe's cafe type sound and I have adored it since i first heard it in 1971. BTW, Eagles came to my small hometown of 30,000 souls and a small college long about 72 or 73. I was there. They gave a stunning concert featuring , at that time, two of their just released singles, Take It Easy and Peaceful Essy feeling. I was hooked then and still am today, in 2023.❤Don and Glen and the guys rule.

I love the message in the song. The music isn't enough. It always has a message, sometimes buried very deep. The Moody Blues is meditation music. We too many times bury our better realities by bombing our senses with drugs or music or anything. Come out of the box. To Our Children's Children is about that hope that someone will rise above this worldly system and see himself as a new person.

I'm sorry but this song is not about being wronged by another. The song starts by saying he "heard an old friend of ours talking on the phone, she said you'd found someone.", talking about his ex. This is not about betrayal, it's about coming to terms with the ex moving on and forgiving that she doesn't love him anymore. And accepting he has to get past grudges because of the breakup and forgiving so it doesn't "eat you up inside", like the song says. Peace.

It’s talking about both. They both wronged each other. “What are all the voices outside love’s open door…Make us throw off our contentment and beg for something more…” You become content in a marriage and at some point, whatever the reason, some people look for something more that that and leave. I have never been divorced and that still hits home. You don’t forgive someone if they haven’t wronged you in a way, even if you brought it on yourself. It’s talking about letting go, not just of the relationship, but the bitterness that stemmed from the separation.

Thanks, Harri (and Cathy), for bringing up this song. One more heartfelt analysis,- but what I like most is your sometimes almost lyrical way to talk, thus creating true and brillant song lyrics: But in a crazy way - he still loves her, and I think that's a very very common thing. Sometimes the people that hurt us the most are the ones we just keep on giving all our love to.

we forgive those who hurt us the most, only as they were the ones that we loved so much. part of us wants to give them a pass, because maybe they will love us again. the other part, is part of letting go of that person, without the need for their love. and then after we realize that they will never love us again, we can let them go, and love them in loss.
