Mercury outboard 9.9hp two stroke

9.9hp mercury outboard on 12ft fiberglass boat with two onboard.
I am really impressed with how smoothly and quiet this motor runs.
Just had a new impeller (water pump), new gear oil, carburetor overhaul, fuel filter rinse, fuel pump overhaul and tune up.

I’d go a 15-30 for that 30 being the absolute most and 15 being absolute minimum

Hard to gauge the performance as we have no idea what boat that is? I'm thinking of getting a new one of these as a kicker for my 26ft light yacht and also for an inflatable dinghy.

The boat was a 12ft heavy built fiberglass boat ( there is a short vid on my channel of the boat, it’s the vintage dinghy, red and white) Could not video the boat as the passenger didn’t want to be in the footage. I would be probably putting a lesser pitch prop on if I was using it as a kicker on a yacht, it will make your motor last. If a motor is over propped (can’t reach peak rpm at full throttle) (like starting off in 3rd gear in your car) you can burn holes in the top of your pistons (seen it many times) it’s due to pre-ignition, the amount of fuel for full throttle and the timing setting at full throttle need to match the recommended rpm range under load. Hope this can help. Ps: think that the boat was reaching about 35kph or around 22mph. Cheers

A guy is selling one for $650 four stroke. Good deal? He said he would run it on muffs for me but I’m trying to get him to run it in a bin full of water

Seems very cheep for a four stroke. Not saying it’s no good but make sure it’s a good running motor before buying. Glenno

I have the 8hp motor, will the 9.9 carb fit ?

Hi mate, I think so but I have not modified the USA built 8hp before. From my understanding the 6hp and the 8hp have the same capacity block and the 9.9hp and 15hp have a larger capacity even though they all look the same. you may even be able to run the 15hp carburetor but not sure what gains or losses would be had. you will have to watch your mixtures as it’s easy to blow your motor if it’s running lean. cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎

I have same outboard on a 12ft aluminum v bottom with it loaded it will do 20mph up river 22mph down.

A bit high for sure, I probably had the cold idle speed still knob still turned up a bit. Sweet running motor though. Cheers
