I've been wanting to try out the Meris Mercury7 on my harp for SO LONG, and I'm so excited to share this with you! You honestly can't go wrong with a Meris pedal -- Mercury7 is my fourth pedal from Meris and I'm so happy to add it to my collection. It's an amazing reverb!

I love the sound of this pedal too much, there's no real way I can express how great the sound is, and how much variety Meris put into one reverb patch while making every setting cohesive. I know it's technically the "Blade Runner" reverb, but when you crank the mix and decay up, on pitch-up settings it reminds me of the sounds the falling stars make in "Howl's Moving Castle". I also think sub-octave reverb is criminally underused, although some great sub-octave reverbs have come into the world in the past few years, this one included along with the Walrus reverbs. (Basically, if you have a blue pedal with two footswitches, it's going to be good.) Also, it matches your harp, which is the most important thing in any gear decision, I find.

One reason I replaced my Slö with the M7 was its sub-octave.

@@flux1968 So, in your opinion, the Mercury has a better suboctave than the Slo in Dark mode?
@flux1968
@flux1968 3 жыл бұрын
@@noyd4172 No, I think they're equally good. What I meant was that when looking for a replacement for the Slö, sub-octave was a major consideration. I ruled out any reverb pedal without a sub-octave.

@@flux1968 Ah, I get you. It's an awesome sound, for sure. I admire Walrus for putting it in every one of their reverb pedals so far, their dedication has helped get the new sound out there.

Wow that thing really kicks ass! I wanted to see more of this pedal so I could decide between The Keeley Caverns and this thing and I think I like the Mercury 7. Once again some killer soundscapes Emily (especially about 5:10 onward, I re-listened to that about 5 times) 😀.

I forgot to say this earlier, but I think yours is the only video that has managed to show how the 5th up setting can be used musically. Even the best guitar demos (including the one by Meris) don't do a good job of it. Maybe that setting is best used on non-guitar instruments 🤷

What I've noticed messing around with these massive reverb machines is how easily they can get out of control & muddy things up. This unit is silky smooth even with the decay & mix way up. Totally flatters your playing!

Great playing, Emily! I love how your playing beautifully highlights the pitch shifting of the shimmer verb. I’ve had my eye on this pedal for a long time, but I’ve told myself no more pedals for now! (Plus, Night sky and Abracadabra both cover a lot of these same types of sounds.)

@@emilyharpist I know that they're a *really* small company, and I also know that the response to the Tararira was greater than they'd expected (good news for them, I guess!), but those two factors mean that it's taking them a really long time to get back to people. It was tough when my Tararira showed up with no back. They made it right in the end (they next day aired the back from Japan!!) but it took a long time to get a response. Their pedals are really unique, though. I like to run the Abracadabra on one channel, and then Aurora on the other, and then mix them as mid-side. It's not what you're supposed to do, but the result is interesting, and better than mono. :-)

Mercury 7 is my favorite reverb. Needs moar glissando though (hehe, jk 😁) You guys really laid it on pretty heavy though. It can sound huge, but it doesn't always have to be that way! Oh, and as I type that, you demo a smaller setting.

Mostly unrelated to your video, but have you ever played a gayageum, or any uncommon harp cousins? Is it, or would you expect it, to be a farcry from the harp you're accustomed to playing?
@emilyharpist
@emilyharpist 3 жыл бұрын
honestly had to Google what a gayaguem was... 😂 I think that's similar to a koto, which is something I have absolutely 0 experience with but always wanted to learn! I would say that those are unlike the harp, because with those instruments I believe you have to pluck the strings with one hand and push/pull the strings with the other in order to change the pitch. On the harp, no matter where you pluck the string, the pitch will stay the same once the key signature is set, and you don't need another hand to control the pitch. The tone quality will change depending on where you pluck, but the actual note will still be the same -- for example, if you pluck a C-natural note at the very top of the string, and then you pluck it at the very bottom, it will still be a C-natural. I would say the closest instrument to a harp is a piano, because the foot pedals are like the piano's black keys in terms of how the key signatures work! On a pedal harp, the pedals change the small gears attached to each string, which make the length of the string longer or shorter depending on what you need it to do. sorry this was a bit of a rant lmao I hope this made sense! I could legitimately talk about harp stuff all day~

Great demo as always Emily - it's a great reverb - it's an anti-shimmer right? Reminds me of 'Vortex' on the GFI Specular Tempus. If you're ever in the UK I'd give my right arm to play a verby jam with you and that harp of yours.
