Yes, crazy fact was that Cher personally suggested Winona to play her daughter since the original actress that was cast did not resemble her much, lol.

Winona Ryder was very lucky in her early co-stars - thinking of this and How to Make an American Quilt. She was surrounded by female legends.

And male costars and just roles in general… Christian Slater in The Heathers and Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, Catherine O’Hara in Beetlejuice… Angelina Jolie and Brittany Murphy in Girl, Interrupted, Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands…. It’s a shame she fell off for so long-she was probably one of the best actresses of her time honestly.

There’s a really quick thing that happened in this scene that I noticed for the first time. It’s around 0:50-1:05 when they’re setting the “too small” tablecloth on the table. Cher puts in in the center in the table for four but Christina pulls it so it sorta covers three seats. Even though the end includes Ms Flax continuing her relationship and staying in their home for longer than they would’ve originally, it feels like the movie really shows the strong bond that’s been formed between these three girls in this scene. My family was my mom and my two younger sisters for a good amount of time so somehow this scene really hits home for me. Actually the whole movie does but i always really enjoyed this one part. Although it’s not bad to welcome new people, the bond between mothers and daughters and sisters can be so incredibly special.

That's actually a cute little tidbit, Cher's trying to make it look pretty and perfect and Christina just wants it to be good for the three of them even if it's not what's "acceptable". The youngest one has the most pragmatic thinking where as Cher's concern over image compromises things.

I'm a soon-to-be-elder who sort of, sort of, knew this movie existed but never saw it and forgot about it long ago. And random YouTubings led me here. Cher, Ryder, and Ricci are *adorable* in these scenes. What's truly remarkable to me is it would be so easy for a scene like this to look, I dunno, phony? Over the top? Forced? Laden with tongue-in-cheek irony? And dammit it's not. It comes across with infectious innocent joy. Just wow.

Incidentally, *Emily Lloyd* was originally cast as *'Charlotte,'* but after some filming, *Cher* felt that she was not believable as her daughter, so the part was recast with *Winona,* who had impressed *Cher* in *_Heathers_* (1989).
