FILM DESCRIPTION:
There's no point in recounting the many production problems and personal hostilities which plagued the filming of Mermaids: the end result is all that matters. Set in the 1960s, the film details the relationship between an unorthodox, unmarried vagabond mother (Cher), and her two daughters. The 15-year-old (Winona Ryder), continually embarrassed by her flamboyant mother, wants to be the world's greatest Catholic; the nine-year-old (Christina Ricci) would be satisfied with becoming the world's champion swimmer. Moving with her family to New England, the older daughter falls in love from afar with the groundskeeper (Michael Schoeffling) from a nearby convent, while Mom takes up with a lonely salesman (Bob Hoskins). Mermaids is perceptively adapted from the warmly comic novel by Patty Dann.

It’s a shame she fell off for so long-she was probably one of the best actresses of her time honestly.

There’s a really quick thing that happened in this scene that I noticed for the first time. It’s around 0:50-1:05 when they’re setting the “too small” tablecloth on the table. Cher puts in in the center in the table for four but Christina pulls it so it sorta covers three seats. Even though the end includes Ms Flax continuing her relationship and staying in their home for longer than they would’ve originally, it feels like the movie really shows the strong bond that’s been formed between these three girls in this scene. My family was my mom and my two younger sisters for a good amount of time so somehow this scene really hits home for me. Actually the whole movie does but i always really enjoyed this one part. Although it’s not bad to welcome new people, the bond between mothers and daughters and sisters can be so incredibly special.

That's actually a cute little tidbit, Cher's trying to make it look pretty and perfect and Christina just wants it to be good for the three of them even if it's not what's "acceptable". The youngest one has the most pragmatic thinking where as Cher's concern over image compromises things.

I remember watching this when i was little and my dad would always comment on this scene as how cute charlotte’s half ponytail bopping about was. I'm a soon-to-be-elder who sort of, sort of, knew this movie existed but never saw it and forgot about it long ago. And random YouTubings led me here. Cher, Ryder, and Ricci are *adorable* in these scenes. What's truly remarkable to me is it would be so easy for a scene like this to look, I dunno, phony? Over the top? Forced? Laden with tongue-in-cheek irony? And dammit it's not. It comes across with infectious innocent joy. Just wow.
