Always cool for the term "tropes" to not be presented automatically negatively.
@glanni

So true! I thought that too. I love tropes and the fact that we're able to categorize and name them nowadays. Only because we do that doesn't make the fact that tropes exist bad. They existed before we had names and values for them.
@glanni

@@hendrikscheepers4144 True, but with the mere concept of tropes I also realized a weird behavior. I can't talk for everyone, but to me it was a life-changing experience to first learn about tropes. I'm a bit of a pattern seeking nerd who tried to understand tropes before even knowing there's a glossary for them, so I love reading about tropes. But I also realized that the understanding of them sorta disenchanted storytelling a little. I'm no longer a viewer in awe, but I observe the magician's tricks. Not everyone is as happy with that place though. Some people love stories for the entertainment, not so much for the mechanical parts, so they don't actually like seeing how a story is composed. And thus, when they realize tropes are there, they feel disappointed. There's truth in the saying "TVTropes will ruin your life". But your point is as valid and there. Seeing tropes as an independent concept soon leads to mixing it up with clichés that we try to call out and purge, instead of as tools that we try to understand and utilize. What this trope issue reminds me of is of music theory. Someone who studies it a little bit might not enjoy a lot of songs anymore if they think too hard about the composition.

Almost everything is a trope. What people actually dislike are clichés, and even then they’re popular for a reason: people like them. A cliché doesn’t even necessarily have to be a bad thing, especially if it’s presented in a new way or a way that subverts it.

Snape! He was the most morally-grey character in Harry Potter, spends so much time seeming antagonistic towards Harry until you realize the reason in Deathly Hallows. I love this very specific trope. A story starts off pretty lighthearted and has a rather comedic villain that the main characters beat with ease frequently. Then later as the story gets darker there's a new, more serious and dangerous villain who not only makes the first villain look like a joke but actively treats them as one. But then the original villain is the one who ends up defeating the new villain.

If you want to read a strong friendship, do continue with the Fitz trilogies in the Realm of the Elderlings series. The relationship between Fitz and the Fool is so beatiful and deep that I became obsessed with them. And the Liveship Traders trilogy (which is between the Farseer trilogy and the Tawny Man trilogy) is a story of a family with three generation of women. And it has pirates and living ships.

It's about a "found family" in modern day playing Robin Hood because "sometimes bad guys make the best good guys." I love old mentors, A.I. and inanimate characters, strong friendships, friends to lovers, elemental magic, found family, and portal fantasy too. Elemental series rec - Books of Bayern by Shannon Hale (You may have read the first book The Goose Girl already. Can't remember if that was you or Elliot.) loved that you mentioned the "time loop" by the end, that is my favorite one. Can't get enough of it. One thing that I love is when a story doesn't end up where it seems to start in the beginning, and it opens up doubling down on its scope many times, until it's so epic is glorious. Think about Ende's Never Ending Story and the Asimov inspired movie The Bicentennial Man. Don't even know if it's technically a trope, and if someone named it, but I love it when they do it.
