Robin Inspires Me | One Piece

For me, Robin is the poster girl on how to write a STRONG female CHARACTER instead of a STRONG FEMALE character. The fact that she is a woman is only relevant in her backstory if you choose to think of some of the dicey situations she's probably had to get herself out of while growing up and about how that turned her into the woman she is today. She's strong but isn't the strongest and even throughout all of Enies Lobby you never really get the feeling like she's being damsel'd even though that's kinda what's happening. She has vulnerability and needs to lean on others but it doesn't make her weak, it just makes her look human. The Japanese voice of Robin's read of "I want to live" never fails to get me to tear up. I can't believe some people have the gall to say she has no personality, because I always love a character who is stoic on the outside but has something stupid going on inside. That and the fact that adjacency to Luffy has a 100% success rate of turning people into goobers has been hilarious. I can't wait until we get knee deep in Poneglyphs later on in the story so she'll get her time to shine even more.

Yea Robin, Nami, and Vivi are just great characters of the SHs. Their gender is never really a impact onto their characters as there a more focus on their history and environment on what led up to being who they are. None of them are weak as they can all handle themselves especially robin but when they do rely on others it not because it their only option but because it is the preferable option they can rely on the most. Also they are also relied on when their counterparts can't meet their objective as shown multiple times in the series. The best damsel I can think of in OP where someone needed saving as they themselves feel like their no way out is actually sanji in WCI which is hilarious to me especially with that arc like disney movie musical vibe with sanji being the prince(ss).

I once again have to praise Oda’s writing, because you can tell that Robin is closed off from the crew before the events of Water 7 and Enies Lobby. He does a wonderful job with establishing her trauma and emotions (or lack thereof). Her emotional growth has been very impressive to see, and the moment on Egghead feels so satisfying, almost as if Oda was building up to it. One Piece is too good 😂

The fact that, in the Strawhats, she's finally found and accepted the family Saul told her she would encounter is so beautiful to me. Robin should be a broken person, but she's strong enough to trust and love despite her trauma and her past. She's on the crew because she's family, and the fact that she can read Poneglyphs is just a very fortunate bonus. Even if she wasn't the best archeologist in the world, she'd still be part of the crew, because it's Robin herself that matters, and not her skills. This goes for all of the Strawhats, but I feel that it's much more telling and powerul in Robin's case because she, out of everyone, has the best reasons to distrust others and push them away. Yep, her utility is secondary, as with the rest of the crew (Zoro was only invited after Luffy got to know why he was tied up, Sanji after he fed Gin, ffs, Luffy didn't even know Chopper was a doctor, he was just a cool transforming reindeer monster). What makes it more evident with Robin is that the transition from "random character" to "nakama" happens after she joins, instead of just before, and we can see it fully fleshed. She goes from keeping distance from everyone, to showing her soft spot with Chopper as her love for cute things takes over. She was already broken, Luffy saving her fixed her up little enough for her to hang around, gave her a little hope to once again latch onto Saul's promise. Then you see her fear: she finally found someone she wants to trust, so she chooses death over being proved wrong again because "as soon as they learn who my enemy is, they too will abandon me, so I can't allow myself to get attached." And finally, we see the last wall breaking, and a 180 turn in Robin. From voluntarily retuning to the train with Blueno, to biting the floor so Spandam cannot drag her. As the last wall crumbles, we see her become unbroken. She went from believing she didn't deserve to live, to not only being able to, but also having people that honestly want her to live, and are willing to give their own lives to guarantee that. Oh, yeah, she can also read poneglyphs, which for Luffy and Mystery Rocks until he finds out he needs the red ones in Zou

During post marineford, I was doing pretty well holding up the floodgates right until when Chopper cried out "I will become a monster for you Luffy" (paraphrasing) From being ostracized by his peers, hating himself for being a "monster" to being accepted by the strawhats to accepting HIMSELF to become the very thing he hated all for Luffy One Piece is goddamn too powerful.

Robin's dream to me is the most emotional one. Her dream technically is to find the poneglyphs and find the truth of the world...but her true dream was the words she screamed at Luffy when he saved her at Water 7: "I want to live!". After being told by almost everyone in her life that she deserved to die, and even accepting it herself, her dream is to live. That's beautiful.

A part of her saw they would act on her behalf, and probably even be loyal to her, but a lifetime of experiences taught her that people like that didn't exist, that everyone is out there for their own. I love how at first Robin only refers to the Straw Hats by their role on the ship, like she calls Luffy "captain" and Nami "navigator", etc, but after they save her from Enies Lobby, she starts calling them by name because she feels closer to them.

20:00 The first time I read 1021 and the line "Demon Child? To protect my friends I will be that demon" (paraphrasing) followed by her Demonio Fleur, it took me like 5 minutes to pick my jaw back up and to clean my drooling from the floor. This was coming from one of the saddest moments in the series: Robin and Brook casually chatting about how they lost everyone, and how they are used to having freaking hallucinations of them being back alive! I just wanted to hug and protect them. Then Brook dropping a line to Black Maria that gave me chills! In Brook's classic calm and polite manner, he said something like "Young lady, for the sake your own physical integrity, you should stop saying that stuff to her," and boy is that a powerful threat considering who it comes from! After that I was expecting the hit, I was bracing myself, a hype moment was coming. And then, the demon. It was impossible for me to brace myself enough for that, for crying out loud!! And ok, I'll admit it, during those 5 min I was also picking my pants back up, and I may or may not have peed myself a bit.

One of my favorite interpretations of the story is Sanji calling out for Robin, it was him showing that he had 100% faith that Robin would defeat Black Maria. This is a guy that is so determined not to hurt a woman he won’t even use armorment haki to defend himself, so why would he freely call out to one of his dear friends to put her in danger, unless he knew for a fact that she wasn’t in any danger at all. That him calling out to her was cementing how strong robin is, despite her lack of fights shown.

Robin has been my favourite character since I was a kid, and I used to so worry that Oda might make her quit or betray the Straw Hats. 😆 But now, I'm thrilled to see her show more emotions and silly faces. And it's hilarious how she calls people by the nicknames Luffy gives them, even though she can remember their full names! I also appreciate that she's the only Straw Hat who asked to join the crew without Luffy's invitation and survived two buster calls. She's truly amazing, and I just love her so much! 😍

One of my favorite Robin scenes is at the end of Skypeia. We’re she’s reading the Poneglyph there and a crowd of people are hauling the giant gold pillar to her as thanks to the Strawhats. Meanwhile the rest of the crew has stolen a bunch of treasure eaten by the giant snake, and we’re racing back to the Merry. The crew sees the crowd behind Robin, not realizing what they’re carrying, and urge Robin to hurry up so they can escape. But instead of clarifying that the natives want to give them something worth many times over what they’re “stealing,” she just tell the people to keep the pillar and runs off with the crew. Because she’s come to understand how much their adventure and getting the gold would mean more to the crew than just being given the pillar.

Robin accepting and owning the title "demon child" reminded me a bit of Chopper and his character growth. When we first met him he thought he was a monster, and it was his being a monster that isolated and alienated him ... and he hated it. As a historian and archivist myself, Robin is easily one of my most favourite characters in the whole of fiction. One of the scenes that most resonated with me to this day is her fight in Skypiea against Yama, where he intentionally destroyed the ruins and she, in her righteous anger, wipes the floor with him for disrespecting history. I can easily relate to her wish to uncover and protect the past. Even in our world today, so much history get’s maliciously destroyed by humans, that had survived for thousands of years and dictators target the history of specific groups of people to erase their past and legitimate their crooked version of events. Even back in Skypeia I loved the fact, that this manga would emphasize the importance of knowing history and preserving knowledge. Oda weaves this theme seamlessly into the central plot line of the story. And the brilliant storytelling of Water Seven and Enies Lobby, combined with Robin’s tragic backstory and the cathartic turning point when she finally has the long awaited Nakama that would protect her, create one of the many high point of One Piece. I also thought her powers and fighting capabilities were underused after Skypeia. Sure, she is a supporting character, a brilliant book nerd and her knowledge will be crucial for Luffy to reach his goal, but she is a badass fighter as well, so I hope Wano marked the return of this side of Robin as well.

The most beautiful thing about Robin is when we do get emotion from her. “I want to live” is one of the most memorable moments in any form of media I’ve experienced, up there with Nami stabbing her tattoo and saying, “Luffy...Help.” She's full of mystery and is the perfect balance of mature sensibility for a crew filled with such animated and zany personalities. Her struggles and backstory make the person she’s become even more astounding and intriguing. "I want to live" still gets me in tears. Robin is a wonderful character. I wish she would get more spotlight too cause she could give alot of Strawhats a run for their money. She suffers from heel turn face nerf syndrome. A term I made up for when an antagonist switches sides. For some reason, Robin is never shown to be as badass as she was in Brouque Works probably until the moment where she tags in for Sanji in that one fight. She doesn't need to be badass because she's still a cool character regardless but, like you said, I'd love to see her and her powers utilized more.

She was important to me growing up, where her story came out when i was in middle school and while Nami was my role model in strength as a kid, Robin is my role model in strength and leaning on others as an adult. Starting in Thriller Bark, Robin starts calling the the crew members by name. Previously she only referred to them by their roles (navigator, swordsman, long nose, cook, doctor) which shows her hesitancy to officially join the crew based on past experiences. It was not until the events of Enies Lobby when the crew showed her their commitment and she was able to admit to herself what she desired that she was able to show those emotional bonds instead of closing herself off.

Robin is the reason I became a one piece diehard and she will always be my favourite one piece character which is tough since Corazon and Sanji are right behind her. I wish we got more goofy and awesome moments of her but at the same time I’m perfectly fine with that. Im coming here from a video I saw from another channel yesterday. Where the creator presented their take on One Piece after reading all of it for the first time and in only one month. And they're take was just emotionless. It basically wanted to say that one piece was OK as an anime/manga, like if they didn't really wanted to enjoy but just finish it. I did not understand that and just felt bad. But now I get here, to a channel I have never seen before and to my surprise is one of the best dives i've encountered myself with into maybe my most beloved character from One Piece and I can feel the love for the characters and the enjoyment you get from the series. It healed my broken soul from the last video and I thank you. I am now going to proceed to feast on your content and be grateful ever after.

Robin has been my favorite ever since enies lobby aired. So yah thata about 20 years now... But... Her accepting the demon with demonio fleur is kinda the same as Chopper accepting the monster with Monster point.. (it was still awesome, but yah had a big déjà vu there)

To this day I can't watch the I want to live moment and Saul's last words to Robin without fighting back tears (and failing mind you). These scenes just get to me, as do Merry's funeral and the moment where Luffy breaks at marine ford. I love Robin she's awesome.

Robin like Brook is my favorite kind of character. As you say, they could both be main characters, but choose to be just amazing teammates. She's incredibly mysterious I will always want more of her in chapters. Her going from very reserved and lonely to giggling like a a little girl at Luffy's antics is one of my favorite arcs. She's the amazing auntie everyone would love to have and is somehow vulnerable, confidant and classy all at the same time.

One of the saddest parts of the Enies Lobby arc was how nonchalant CP9 talked about Robin dying. Saying out loud that she has no value, she’s better off dead. The only good thing she can do is die. Prepping her for her death and she just accepts it. I got so pissed how every agent acted as if Robin was a monster when none of them question the ridiculous reason why she’s considered a threat.

She definitely knows more than what she has told the strawhats/ readers. I feel like by doing that she's making it so if anything were to happen and she gets in trouble it'll only be her since she's the only one who knows anything. Really subtle way of her character making sure not to endanger anyone unnecessarily. For example she literally kept the location of pluton to herself until we discovered it was on wano.

After everything she’s been through Robin deserves all the happiness. She is my favourite One Piece character, next to Doflamingo. Probably in my top 5 favourite anime/manga characters too. (#1 is Korosensei from Assassination Classroom) I love her running gag of imagining dark scenarios and love of cute things.

I love Robin so much, seen her have trust in someone and starting to grow as a person it ready show who she and everyone care for the crew. She maybe in the sideline or the support crew but we and luffy need her the most

Robin pulled me out of a really dark place, she's just so strong and I love seeing her be goofy with the straw hats. It's just like awh you can still be happy after trauma : ' ), She's just so freaking cool too. I often re-read the series and notice some lil quirks of hers towards other crew members that are really wholesome. Like how she'll only say dark stuff only around specific crew members like Usopp. It's just nice seeing have such a great family dynamic with the crew honestly one my favorite characters. I cannot wait to see what she does next! I cried when she cried!

Robin is one of my favorite characters from anything, ever. I identify with her so much: her reservation and difficulty in opening up, the way she hangs back and watches the crew be chaotic, the way she always felt unwanted and alone. The first time I watched the anime I didn’t cry at her big Enis Lobby scene, but these days when I replay that level in Pirate Warriors 3, if I watch the cutscene I’m guaranteed to start weeping.

Robin’s experience after sabaody where she was forced onto the bridge construction in tequila wolf is possibly the saddest I’ve been during my time watching OP. The entire concept of generations of people born into slavery to construct the bridge absolutely broke my heart, even more than the other sad point in her story.

I once read a fanfic where Zoro forbids Robin to go back to doing assassination work for the crew. Because she was doing that out of survival, and that is not Luffy's style, and she doesn't have to do dirty work anymore. Because with the StrawHats, Robin only has to do what she loves the most which is being an archaeologist.
