I'd be interested to see a comparison of the PX-160 with the P-125, given that the PX-160 was Casio's main card for a while until the S-1000 showed up on the scene. Great comparison, great playing.

Both are surprisingly quite good. Your introductory information clearly put Casio ahead in technical specs, with higher watt amplifier, and double the polyphony. This caused me to expect it would have the better sound of the two. However, the opposite resulted from hearing both! While I enjoyed the Casio--not yet having heard the Yamaha--the moment you began playing the Yamaha it won my preference for tone quality. The Casio is brighter and thin sounding; the Yamaha is more mellow and full sounding. Both will appeal to whoever favors each one's different timbre.
@teleman074 жыл бұрын
Okay, I have to put this here so beginners would not choose their keyboard depending on simply which one sounds better. In fact the onboard sound engine should not even be on the deciding factor list. What you will eventually find yourself doing as you learn more and more about the piano is that you will start experimenting with software sound engines that can put nasa supercomputers put to shame if they need be. The sound you will whip up with these is gonna mean that you will forget how the onboard sound engine runs in the first place and realize that the most important part of the keyboard is its action and connectivity features. I believe there is no comparison here to be had considering the px 160 also supports half pedaling even through midi meaning if you can pair it with a good cpu, you will put the grand film producers to shame in your own way (when you get your skills improved enough to take advantage of these I mean). ps. I just realised I am saying these to a genos playing wizard! Geat stuff! Well now, let us just say that you can take the awesome px160 action and make it into your own genos through software options. Besides, even though Yamaha with its quality is not even comparable to Casio in mid to high tier products, their lower end is sorry to say it this way but, utter trash. The only thing Casio is going for them is that they do not differentiate high tier low tier designs and thus unlike Yamaha, the px160 contains the absolute best action they ever came up with.

@TheRedTech984 жыл бұрын
Excellent video, thanks! Having tried both, I really suggest most people to either try them both out and feel the keys and absorb the sound, or just go with either. Casio is more expensive but offers more sounds, plus recording plus louder speakers, but yamaha being more affordable, still packs a punch and has that iconic rich yamaha sound. Both sound amazing. Casio has a mellow piano sound that sounds more yamaha ish, and yamaha has a piano 2 sound that sounds more casio ish. Keys on casio are slightly better, I prefer the texture over the smooth keys of the Yamaha, but it's not that big a deal and I'd be very happy with either. Features are more plenty with casio but not deal breaker. Mechanism very similar as is the build quality and key noise. Good luck!

I just started playing about 3 years ago, and after about two years on the Casio PX-160 (my first ever piano/keyboard) my middle E started having a really weird sound. It kindof sounds like the “bright” piano sound while set in concert mode. No matter what mode it’s in though, the key changes to be much more tinny sounding. I’ve loved the piano but this one key is really ruining my experience. I’m not sure what caused it, or if it’s fixable, but it’s a little disappointing that after about 2 years it sounds so wonky and it interrupts so many pieces I play.

They should mention the key noise in casio px-160, which is very annoying, even at high volume or using headphones. This in my understanding is a design flaw as I have tested 2 px-160 and they make the same noise. Obviating this defect, the keyboard is far superior to the yamaha. However, yamaha P45 has some design flaws: 1) Organ or String presets are not sustained when releasing the keys and holding the pedal held down. 2) Some keys sound louder than others. 3) in my case I found a defect for the preset "string" in the fifth octave, for the notes "A", "A #" and "Bb ". A background sound is produced that would be a defect in the sample

I really like the feel of the key tops and the key is on the Casio. I have a similar model from Costco at home. I think your comments on the wattage are kind of misleading. It takes a doubling of the wattage to increase the volume by 3DB all things being the same. The size of the speakers and placement can make more of a difference than then a couple of watts. I do feel like the action on the Cassie it was very noisy and because you’re doing this through a direct line out you don’t hear it when you’re pressing the keys as much but if you turn them down and just play you can tell that the Casio is noisier and looser I believe.
@labanlabansson61474 жыл бұрын
While 3db sounds like a little, 3db is technically a doubling of sound. However our ears notices 10db as a doubling of sound. Sorry for the poor english, is doubling even a word? :)

I think it is at least fair to keep in mind this is a review by a Kawai/Roland/Casio dealer who is not a Yamaha dealer (although Merriam Music does have Amazon links for some basic Yamaha products). As such, I expect the video to highlight the perceived/alleged value of the Casio PX-160 over the Yamaha P45.
@MerriamPianos2 жыл бұрын
We certainly do strive to be as objective as possible and we never shy away from complimenting models and lines that we may not necessarily carry ourselves.
@Instrumental-Covers2 жыл бұрын
@@MerriamPianos Hello Stu. I think the word here would not be "objective", because this review is mainly subjective. Maybe you have tried your best to be fair and unbiased, but it is still a subjective view. There are very few objective statements in this video, for example, when you mention polyphony and wattage (neither one has a real impact in practice in these models). Your comments about piano sound and action are mainly subjective. To me, an objective comment is one that no one can refute. For example, no one can refute that the Yamaha P45 has white shiny keys and the Casio PX-160 has textured keys. That is a fact beyond discussion. Now, the subjective part is your evaluation of whether you like one better than the other. As you know, all Kawai GL grand pianos have white shiny keys... do you still prefer this Casio PX-160 to a $54,000 Kawai GL50 on the key texture? The video is mainly a discussion of how advantageous you see the Casio over the Yamaha, which is by itself not an objective endeavor. The only way to be 100% objective would be to make a video based on the specifications list, which no one would watch then ha ha. So, the video is subjective by nature. Not only your videos, but all other piano channels. By the way, the Casio PX-160 doesn't have tweeters on the front, just a pair of 12 cm speakers (same as the P45). Both have sound ports, which you mentioned in the Casio. The Yamaha also has sound ports across the top panel. I personally prefer the Yamaha because it sounds better to my ears. None of the extras in the Casio are relevant enough for me to buy it over the Yamaha.

There is some truth to the notion that the sound is a variable component when it comes to digital pianos that have MIDI capability as you can access a plethora of different sounds through VST plugins and instruments. With that said, some players will be relying on the built-in sounds within the instrument. :)
