I don't care if he gets flack for being different - he definitely is a real crowd pleaser and more performances like this builds interest. Yes, tradition is tradition - but all traditions have to start somewhere. Mark's talent is by far beyond anything I've seen in decades...reminds me of Johnny Lum Ho when he was also considered a maverick. Great job AHA!!! Keep doing what you do!

What can I say, saw all the great quality vids of this performance disappear over years. Was privileged to watch my first cuz Martin, and my cousin's the mMahoni sister's share a beautiful part of Hawaiian culture. I remember going to their practices in my teens when I visited the states. Always grateful from Ozzie. 🇭🇲

Kimo has been a fan for long time. Mark and Patrick Makuakane are fixtures in our SF Bay Area dance community. I was lucky enough to dance with Kumu Mark while I was going through chemo-therapy for cancer and it not only relaxed me, but to be surrounded with that music was wonderful. That was 26 years ago. I learned a lot and met a whole lot of wonderful folks.

You are so right. Many criticized Johnny Lum Ho's style for his halau also. AHA rocks, is all I can say.

Wpw! I really love Mark’s style of chanting, together with the spectacular dancing, and the costumes in my favorite ocean colors. I only wish that it was in high definition!

Alot of the videos sadly got pulled off KZbin. I was so disappointed. I guess making money is more important than sharing the culture with the world.

I'm sure AHA would like to win, or place high, however they came to make a statement. Transplants from Hawai'i, can still represent Hawai'i!

great chanting, great creativity but as others have pointed out he sort of allows sloppy work by the dancers and it feels little disrepectful
