The God has nothing to do with magic. This is the God's word, Leviticus 20: 27: "A man also or a woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones; their blood shall be upon them." Levticus 19: 31: "Turn ye not unto them that have familiar spirits, nor unto the wizards; seek them not out, to be defiled by them: I am Jehovah your God." (ASV) This is a christians' way, Acts 19: 19: "And not a few of them that practised magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all; and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver." But, the inhabitants of World Sodom run to fortune tellers and astrologers while blessing them in the name of God... The problem is Devil runs the world. He is liar and murderer. This is the reason why deception and violence are everywhere. This is the reason why Hitler got the power, but Christ was executed as "blasphemer" and "rioter" by denunciation of clergy. This is the reason why the whole world is Sodom. That's why we've got the Gospel about the God's kingdom. Jehovah would put everything in order. He has anointed the king, Jesus Christ. The dead will be resurected and we'll meet our loved ones again! :-)

It is with gladness we think of thee The lads with pipes in the Shire and Bree. The smoke rings blow, the bowls ignite In thy story we're swept, as our souls take flight. Off we roam to our secondary home As we read in dreams the legendary poem.

In the whisker'd twirl of smokewreath'd lore, Guite's grand read'n beardscape score; pipe'n tufts, the charm's all stow'd, ‘tis the fumy fur where magic glowed. Without his beard, without his pipe, Guite's readings might lack the ripe Magic, that now so deeply runs; It's his style that charms us, ensconced in plumes.

I am watching this from near Chicago. In 2021 my father died. We played LOTR and read to him from the Hobbit as he did to us as children. He was here and there and everywhere as kids, because of his mental health and addiction issues. But when he was with us, he carried a pipe, tobacco, and Tolkien. He reminds me of you Malcolm. This story comes on the heels of his homegoing Nov 5, 2021. It has been a few years but I am always reminded of him all year and esp leading up to the time we spent together those days as we lay in wait with him, reading, singing, listening. Sacred space that we don't often talk about but he got to hear his kids share in his greatest joy (Tolkien) and talk about the road ahead. Thank you.

I have so many different copies of LOTR but my most used one is the copy that has been on my phone since 2016. I started reading it from my phone kindle app when my mom was going through daily cancer treatments. Those bits of waiting time..I could read LOTR and be taken away from my circumstances. Since then, it’s become a daily habit to read from LOTR, mostly before bed. It brings stability and comfort and hope. So I’ve read it through so many times, I can no longer count. Thank you for this beautiful excerpt. What a wonderful reading and a perfect pause to remember those who are no longer with us.

I also have lost count of how many times I have read through the LOTR trilogy....stopped counting after the 20th time through! It is always good to hear from others who keep returning to it as well. There is something so deeply beautiful, true, and hopeful about Tolkien's writing!

The bookstore in my area is taking donations to gift to kids. Anywhere from toys, to games, to books themselves. Naturally, when I saw an entire compendium of The Chronicles of Narnia, I just had to donate it. May the child who receives that gift, find wonder inside. Hearing that aloud I was even more impressed by the use of alliteration that is so common in the Anglo Saxon poetry that Tolkien loved. My other observation is how modern the character of Eowyn is, a woman who disguises her gender but then uses it to her advantage, when you think this was written by a man in the late 1940's, well over 70 years ago. People who have never read him but criticise his work for being too 'male oriented' forget he had very complex strong female characters like Eowyn and Galadriel.
