As an NHL fan, most of us will cheer if a member of our fav team lays a serious hit on the opponent. Also I remember hearing that NHL hits are 17% harder than American football

And they play way more games per season. NFL is 17 games per season and NHL is 82. That has to take a toll. Though I do wonder why the career lifespan of an NFL player is so short compared to an NHL player. You would assume with hard, and more frequent hits, they would not last as long.

There is a big difference with NFL big hits though because 95% of the time it's helmet to helmet whereas hockey is mostly body

@@thicky1336 Yeah, the big difference is made by the way hockey penalties enforce technique: Charging: no leaving your feet to turn yourself into a helmet-missile; Head-butting: See above, no head-missiles; Holding: no grabbing someone to spin them around and throw them with their own momentum, you have to transfer yours directly into them, which makes throwing a high-speed hit often hurt the hitter just as much, so they’re less inclined to; and finally, NO HITS-TO-THE HEAD: can you even imagine football with this?

for the record, this video wasn't just "biggest clean hits in the NHL", some of the hits in it were definitely illegal and ended up with a penalty. If you don't know the sport very well it's definitely a bit hard to tell the difference though!

Tom Wilson got suspended 20 games for trying to decapitate Oskar Sundquist and the craziest part was that the game didn’t even matter as it was the preseason. You know it’s a bad hit when your own fans are booing you and some of the most homer announcers can’t even justify the hit as being clean.

A few after that were not clean either. I love hard checks, but I have notolerance for head hunting. Let's all stick to the good clean violence. The kind where players leave the ice battered and bruised. NOT the dirty kind where players leave the ice on a stretcher. I agree that to a novice the difference might be difficult to spot. I bet most doctors, even ones who have never seen ice hockey, could see the difference though. The game allows for tough hits, and I love it. However the things that are illegal are illegal for a reason. I also think the NHL should do away with the instigator rule. (That ship has sailed, but let me have my fantasy.) Let enforcers enforce! In my honest opinion I think hockey is the most difficult sport to play. I had the chance to work with the Blackhawks training staff in the 2015 championship season and seeing players like Kane, Toews, Keith, and a bunch of others just throw weights around, smashing endurance drills and flexibility tests was jaw dropping to say the least. Love the reaction!

You should reach to NHL mic’d up fights. These guys are the toughest athletes around playing through injuries missing teeth, skates cutting people wide open and still playing, yet you will hear how nice, genuine and respectful of the sport they can be even while bashing someone’s head in. It’s the best. Love that you can fight in hockey as long as you stay on your feet. And that’s when the crowd really gets into it banging on the glass. It’s the best

But I literally watched the man in the minors in Providence for years before he made it to the NHL in I think Dallas… I’m not making it up when I say I truly never saw the man lose a fight. Never. Not only did he never lose, he HURT guys in fights. If you fought Downey you were guaranteed to be coming away with blood on your face at a minimum. (Unrelated: I also saw him take a hockey stick up his shorts somehow when he collided with an opponent, the stick snapped and sliced his femoral artery right there on the ice. It was awful. Most blood I’ve ever seen in my life, it was an actual miracle he survived)

I got low-bridged (when the hitting player ducks and flips you over) when I played as a teenager. I flipped 360 in the air and it scared my parents so much I wasn’t allowed to play the next year. It stung but honestly I was right back up and skating before the referee stopped play. You don’t really think about it in the moment, you just want to get back to what you were doing.

I also had to take a break from hockey cause my parents were scared. I always played a annoying type of game (chirps, low blows, sreening the goalie) and was very small (still am) so bigger guys would headhunt me alot. One time I got a clean hit on a guy (my best hit ever) and two 6+ feer guys just beat the shit out of me didnt get anything but my parents took me out of competitive hockey

One of the biggest hits I've ever seen was Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara absolutely staple gunning Montreal Canadiens player Max Pacioretty into the center glass. It happened March 8th, 2011. Check that one out. (Note: Max Pacioretty was hurt, but recovered so quickly, he earned the nickname Wolverine.)

Having played both ice hockey and football (neither professional), ice hockey hits are worse, but you just pop back up because the game isn't stopped. You gotta keep going and if you do, your teammates will back you up and then some.

I don’t even like watching hockey, but it’s such a respectable sport. The hits are definitely a part of the sport, and fights can happen very often. Best part of the fights is they’re legal and the refs will let it happen for a little bit. Such a fun sport. Idk much about it besides that. But a live hockey game is a crazy experience

As one who played hockey for years, if you see the check coming, you prepare for the hit. Sometimes it might look really bad, but it may not even hurt. The problems come when you don't see it coming. That's when it REALLY hurts. After a blind hit I went head-first into the boards and spent the rest of the period in the locker room.

Yes hits are not only an expected part of the game but also a stat they track as to how many hits a player puts out in a game/season but to count on the stat sheet the hit must result in a turn over. This is also why they jump back up so fast because play doesn't stop, so if you're laying on the ice taking to long to get up you're leaving your team short handed

That big guy in black and gold at 10:50 that you mentioned, he's the tallest guy to ever lace up in the NHL. That's "Big Z", Zdeno Chara (recently retired) Boston Bruins captain. He's 6'9 without the skates on, 7'0" with the skates. One of the best and longest-playing defenseman to ever hit the ice. He played from 1996 to 2022, mostly with the Bruins. Among his records for just being a massive human being and one of the oldest guys to continue to play at the NHL level late in his career (he retired at 45 which is way longer than most guys ever play in the NHL, most are in their mid/late 30s when they retire from pro play), he also has the hardest recorded shot (108.8 mph).

Chara could have seriously hurt a lot of people, the league was lucky he's such a nice guy. He knew that using 80% of his strength, usually just an arm shove, was enough to remove people from the puck. That and his insane fitness level helped him play until 45.... Boston had the better version of Chara, but Ottawa had the scariest version. Sens Chara had a much shorter temper and fought a lot more often, he was an all-star and the most terrifying and intimidating enforcer at the same time. Boston valued him too much to use him that way. Ottawa Chara is one of my favourite players ever.... The Bruins stole him away by offering him the keys to the franchise, a wise move. The Sens were stacked at that time and didn't value Chara more than their other stars, big mistake. I was devastated. The next year Ottawa got to the finals and were physically pounded by Anaheim. It wouldn't have gone down like that if they cut ties with Redden and gave Zdeno what he deserved. sorry for the rant.

A few things about watching hockey, for me it is fun sometimes to see hits but not when guys are targeting the head or if a player is facing the boards and someone hits them from behind. Biggest injuries are concussions either by another player or head hitting the ice. Also the players getting hit are usually focused on the puck, it’s tough to have your head up while playing the puck.

A few things for you since you don't know a lot about hockey. First, the biggest reason a lot of people go to hockey matches is to see the big hits and fights. Secondly, these guys wear a ton of pads to help to prevent a lot of injury. Finally, you can grab the puck out the air but you have to drop where you are to keep playing.

Hockey is a tough sport but the hits aren't always as big as these. There are a lot of great hockey plays that are amazing to watch especially because they're made at such high speeds. When I was younger, soccer was thought of as a girls game because there was no hitting but that's changing now in Canada as more and more people see it as a good competitive and accessible game.

I moved to Canada from the Uk 18yrs ago. Hockey has a lot of qualities similar to football but the speed, finesse and physicality are so so much better. It's a beautiful sport. I never got in to any other north American sports. Just Hockey. Highly recommend watching goals, skills and maybe fights if you're into that

I've been playing hockey since 1984. I was 8. Been knocked on my ass more times than I can count but only ever got caught with my head down once and I was out cold but I only missed one shift. for your question at 6:30 you're allowed to catch the puck with your hand but you have to immediately drop it at your feet or on your own stick, you can't pass it to a teammate or throw it. If a teammate touches it before you do after catching it, play is stopped and there's a faceoff.

You're not allowed to make the head the principle point of contact, so when you see those side "glanced" whiplash plays of hitting the head, they are illegal. The majority of the ones are shoulder to chest. Primary difference between this and NFL is the speed. This guys go a lot faster than anyone on the NFL can run. But yeah, also the ice. For the NHL, a lot of big hits you will hear the commentators say "he didn't keep his head up" because there's a saying in hockey that you have to keep your head on a swivel or else you're going to get smoked. Also yeah you can grab the puck (as long as you're not in the goalie crease) but you have to immediately put it back down.

So yes you are technically right but "knocking it down" is not really the best description. Basically it's a rule saying you can't carry the puck while skating. Or hand-pass lol.

I was never too good at hockey but I did play a few years in a league where you were allowed to hit and I speak from many experiences when I say these hurt more than big hits in football, it’s a matter of going 20 km/h then suddenly becoming stationary by someone’s shoulder flying at you at 20 km/h in the opposite direction and it really makes your head ring, 10/10 would do again though

Yes this is a normal part of the game. Less so now than it used to be. Two of the best players ever, Paul Kariya and Eric Lindros, had their careers shortened because of after effects of taking hits like this.

I did’t see any Scott Stevens hits in this video, but I think he was involved. I don’t take joy to see any player’s career shortened by a hard check. Oddly I think Stevens career was ended with concussive checks also. I was a Devs fan and I remember big checks on Lindros and Paul. I don’t see it as often in todays gsme

Hip Checks -- the hits where they are skating in reverse and flip the target over themselves, like the near-360 back on his skates hit at 10:18 -- are among my personal favorites! They're often referred to as being an "old-school hockey" thing, but it's a very effective defensive technique, even sometimes with some pizzazz. Spectacular hits! There are some compilations for just those here on KZbin. Good watch :)

Also if you want an example of just how brutal some hits can be in the NHL, check out Zdeno Chara’a hit on Max Pacioretty. It wasn’t so much of a regular hit, more so a collision caused by Chara. Accidental, but absolutely the most Brutal impact you will ever see a human body take that doesn’t just kill them. Amazingly, Pacioretty not only survived, but he fully recovered and was back in the league playing again just about half a year later. Chara was of course penalized for the incident but the incident also brought about a change in the rink building, there’s now a curved piece of glass where the hit took place so if it was to happen again, it wouldn’t be into a flat 90° wall. You’ll understand when you watch the incident what I mean. But you absolutely have to see it. Also you should look up Clint Malarchuk injury and Richard Zednik injury. Both the same injury but Malarchuk’s was arguably much more serious just based on what you can see. Both were life threatening though. Warning, there’s blood, quite a lot of it too especially in Malarchuk’s video

I am also Canadian and these kind of hits are somewhat common place and I have dished out as well as received them. However there were several in this video that were illegal hits. For instance hits to the head and elbows coming up are minor penalties if the game is called by the book. However in the NHL allot of illegal hits are ignored and not called by the officials.

The open-ice hits always hurt the worst. Checking into the boards is pretty regular, but the boards are pliant and the ice is not. Check out the fights, too!

I played high school hockey D1 college applied some junior hockey and when you focus on one sport like Hockey you don’t appreciate how tough these guys are because if it is a high school and college player you did a lot of the stuff you see at a lower level I remember getting five teeth knocked out, and while sitting on the bench, my biggest concern was not missing a shift, and basically handing the pieces of my teeth to the trainer who put them in a cup of ice and milk, so I can make an assessment of having them put back in after the game

I played hockey all my life, in high school I took a mean hit that laid me flat on my back and knocked the wind right out of me, immediately got back up to change out with another player because i was in so much pain..... We wear a lot of pads so most hits you take hurt but wont keep you from stopping play. Love watching peoples reactions to the sport, so under rated.

I played competitive hockey for years. While playing junior, I was hit while coming around the net with the puck...totally blind. I was knocked out cold unconscious and had my jaw broken in two places. Hockey is no joke.

There was a player named Borje Salming, most of his career he played with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Great Defenceman who passed away a few months ago. I think it was in 1987 he was playing a game and had his face carved up by another players skate. I can't remember the name of the player who did it and it wasn't on purpose but Salming needed a lot of stitches. I've watched and followed hockey since 1975 but that was one of the scariest things I remember seeing.

One reason they want to get up quick is that play generally doesn't stop when someone goes down unless it is very serious, usually play will continue until there is a regular stoppage of play, so if you are down on the ice you're leaving a hole that your team has to fill.

Another lifelong Boston Bruins fan here!🙌🏼 I've watched hockey, played hockey, & coached hockey--I've also coached rugby & I put ice hockey & rugby players in the same category for toughness, with the only difference being that due to the speeds hockey players can achieve & the speed with which they accelerate up to, it *definitely* requires all that equipment! If you want to see some legendary hockey fights, check out the 1970s Boston Bruins when the fight went up into the Rangers' stands & Mike Millbury beat a fan with the fan's own shoe! Nowadays, fights aren't as frequent; however, but YES every player fiercely defends their teammates💪🏼

I've grown up playing hockey, and my first game in Junior A, I got absolutely smoked like this. I remember feeling super winded and I saw stars. My worst injury was getting pinky partially cut off due to holy gloves, drove to the hospital in full gear to get it reattached. LOL.

Nice to see hockey content! Some answers and recommendations: - There are definitely wilder hits out there - 80% these hits are "standard" in that you'll see ones like that every game or 3. If you want to do a 2nd round, I'd recommend looking at a channel like Delta Highlights for hardest hits...their compilations are generally quite exciting. You'd see some of the same hits again, but the fact that you never saw legends like Kronwall dump folks is a disservice to yourself :) - I've read the hits are have been calculated to be ~17% harder in the NHL than NFL. NFL has larger players on average but they are moving slower, plus a) often they won't be actually sprinting head-on at each other and b) are able to do things like ducking and dodging more easily because cleats on grass > skates on ice for abrupt changes (generally). Car analogy would be more NFL sideswipes vs. NHL head-on collisions (exceptions exist of course). In the NHL you can have two smaller (but still very large) players moving in opposite directions at 20-25mph (~30-40 km/h) so they both add a lot of energy to the collision. For reference that's like having a 200-240lb (90-110kg) man skating at you almost as fast as Usain Bolt's top sprinting speed. - Players sometimes leave their feet when they see a big hit incoming because you don't want to stop abruptly and if you jump a bit you can get tossed and slide. The hardest hits are the ones that immediately dump you down without much slide or even worse make you go backwards which = complete reversal of momentum. Sometimes it's better to be thrown through the air and slide 20 feet on the ice because it allows the energy of the collision to reduce over a longer time. It's the same reason paratroopers are taught to roll on landing. Ice is double-edged because you can slide but it's also really solid. - People do absolutely have injuries after hits, and sometimes it ends their careers. The example that springs to mind is Eric Lindros who was an absolute beast of a man, 6'4" (193cm), 240lbs (109kg) and very fast for his size. His style of play saw him frequently plowing through opponents like a charging bull. When he got to the NHL though his career was ended because the hits by and against him were so huge that he was concussed into retirement. His case is a big reason why now the NHL rules hard against head hits. - You can catch the puck, you just have to drop it immediately. You can't hand-pass in an offensive zone or throw it into the goal. Cheers from Canada, hope you continue to enjoy the amazing and very physical sport that is hockey. NHL hits are much harder on average because they often happen with more speed. Also, NFL plays are typically headed in a single direction, so it is easier for the ball carrier to predict from where they will get hit. NHL plays can go in any direction at any time.

"Do players get straight back up" -- many times, but in a lot of these clips they cut before you can see the effect. For instance, that very first one in the video? Toews couldn't stay on his feet and had to crawl to the bench. I remember it too well.

If you want to see some good hockey fighting footage from the 70's do a search for bench brawls. They had some classic ones back then. The Broadstreet Bullies (Philadelphia Flyers) and the Boston Bruins were notorious for their shenanigans. There was even a game where the Bruins and the fans got into it. That was totally out of control.

Shoulder on Shoulder contact is allowed, Shoulder on Torso contact is allowed, Hip on hip contact is allowed, and Hip on torso contact is allowed. Everything else is a penalty depending on the referee's mood.

Hey Brother. Great video! I play hockey for fun now, and there's no hitting allowed. But, when I was younger I used to hit and take hits all the time. The rule in the NHL is that you're not allowed to target the head, so you have to be careful. You're bang-on when you quickly noticed that the hockey players tend to get right back up if they're able. If a player stays down, there's no question that he's hurt pretty bad. You'll also notice that the puck is usually nearby. That's because, like soccer, you can only tackle (body check) the player with the puck. Otherwise, it's a penalty for interference. Keep 'em coming!

You asked. I played hockey from about 5 years old until about 40 when my knees just couldn’t handle it anymore. I’ve been knocked out cold. Been hit so hard I literally saw stars. Been so dizzy after a hit that I was crawling in a circle and couldn’t find the bench. Taking a hard hit in hockey is no joke man.

My town puts hockey rinks up in the winter for the public to play hockey. We just throw our sticks in the a pile and pick two captains who grab random sticks and throw them in their pile and that's whos team your on. You be like a kid playing against grown dads.

Be careful, it's addictive😂 To answer your question, I have been upended like what you saw, but it was in American football. Started playing at 6 years old, hitting doesnt usually start until about 12 years old. Broke my rib at the beginning of a tournament trying to hit someone into the bench. Played the next two games after that. Hockey players are a different breed.

Played hockey all my life and every coach I ever had said "keep your head up and keep your stick on the ice". Never truer words spoken when it comes to playing hockey. If you are looking at the puck on your stick you will get you clock cleaned.
