They didn't even have the worst on here. Todd Bertuzzi on Steve Moore is one of the dirtiest and most dangerous plays I've ever seen. Literally fractured his vertebrae and ended his career.

Getting hit against the boards hurts way less than the open ice hits, however, it's the ones where the guy is like 4 or 5 feet from the boards that can get dangerous
@spacetiger5076

If you’re right up by the boards, yes they absorb a lot of the impact. If you get chucked into the boards…. Ouch. They can be unforgiving.
@paulattwell6157

Yep. On the boards, elbows high, maybe a little jump as contact is made, do a little swim with the elevated elbow. If you do it all right, you’re good, you do it wrong, winger gets an elbow to the face, you’re still good, you go to the box and feel shame.

Just a note - the hit where Max Pacioretty was driven into the center divider (at kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6Wkan-QitZ8Y7s) actually DID break Pacioretty's neck - his 4th cervical vertebra was fractured, to be specific. Pacioretty was out for the rest of the season, but came back the next year, and still plays to this day. Because of this hit, all the stanchions in all the arenas are rounded, and not straight any more, lessening the likelihood of a repeat instance. It was an incredibly dirty hit, though. While hockey has always been a "full contact sport" for it's century plus existence, I'm glad to see that they are continuing to remove the egregious, "intent to injure" type of hits from the game today. It used to be MUCH worse than it is today, and a lot of the most famous "clean checks" of the past would lead to a suspension today - mostly for blatant head shots. There is a long history of hockey players playing through and suffering from concussions because of things like this. Fortunately, between the NHLPA's pressure, and the actions of Gary Bettman (much as he gets a lot of hate for his decision making) the league is far more willing to change the rules to protect the players than it used to be in the past.

Players still get away with stuff. Just think of Tom Wilson in 2021 when he only got fined 5k and no suspensions when being dirty against the Rangers. The game after which they played against each other days later, they fought 6 times in the first 5 minutes of the game. Prior to the meetup, the league fined the Rangers 250k when the Rangers called them out. It's complete bs. Players still barely get suspended or even for that long.

Headshots are definitely a concern, especially considering that they wear elbow pads that have a hard plastic exterior. It makes them weapons. Ironically headshots are a more recent (late 80s to present) development (not that they didn’t occasionally happen). Back in the day players didn’t wear helmets so head shots were far less frequent (40s to early 70s when more and more players started to wear helmets). Craig McTavish was the last player to play and not wear a helmet (mid to late 80s as I recall). Knee on knee hits were often seen as the dirtiest hit, because a knee injury can effect your ability to skate and thus end your career in a blink of an eye.

This is a large part of the reason that fighting doesn’t get outlawed. The argument is that people would play a lot dirtier and take dangerous cheap shots if they didn’t either face the risk of getting beaten up for a cheap shot, or have the ability to settle a score in a relatively safe way.

2:10 There are two standout hockey players named 'Lemieux'... Mario Lemieux is a Pittsburgh Penguins legend, one of the best players of all time, in many respects second only to Gretzky, career cut a bit short because of leg and back trouble and other things... The other is Claude Lemieux, who's the best offensive upside enforcer in the game's history. 'Ferocious' is a good word to describe his play, but he also put up pretty great numbers for someone with his style of play. While he had a couple seasons around 80 points and mostly hovered around 50-60 in his prime, he was an outstanding playoff performer, won playoff MVP one year, made the playoffs in 15 straight seasons and won 4 Stanley Cups. His son, Brendan, is a depth player / lineup filler / pure grinder in the NHL right now, playing for the Flyers.

I’m surprised Marty McSorley wasn’t in the original compilation. Correct me if I’m wrong but he’s the only player I know of to be charged with assault after a nasty high stick.

Yep and I was at that game. It was terrifying watching Brashear lying there kind of convulsing while uncoscious. I can still see it in my head.

2:18 Matt Cooke essentially ended Marc Savard's career with that hit. Savard had to lay in a dark room for months because of it. Cooke is one of the NHL's dirtiest players of the last 30 years. You should watch a compilation of him.

Every Canadian knows that three to five feet from the boards is the danger zone if you hit them wrong and they connect with the boards and snap the head back it can be a career or life ending hit.

That Pacioretty hit really could have derailed his career but he came back strong. Bunch of broken bones in the face. They even modified the shape of the glass so the lip isn't such a big edge.

I've been checked into boards from 3 feet out. Blindsided me (men's league no checking) and smashed my head into the board and then it bounced off the ice. Tried to get up to fight him but couldn't even stand. Concussion. If it was against the boards it would not have hurt. If it had been middle ice, the impact would hurt but I wouldn't have hit the boards in the air. Definitely, the worst I've had.

Should watch hits from forumer nhl player Niklas Kronwall most of his hits should have been called for charging because he’s targeted the player before they would have the puck. Also should watch Moritz Seider he has a lot of hits from when people are trying to hit him in his defensive zone and he just sits them down.

I'm a little surprised that the "Bertuzzi vs Moore" incident didn't show up in this video (the hit that lead up to it did), but when asked "What is the dirtiest hit you have ever seen?", that would be my answer. Wasn't even really a hit, more like assaulting another player on the ice. It ended Steve Moore's career, and I personally don't think that Todd Bertuzzi's suspension was long enough (mainly because most of the suspension was during a lock-out, so no one was playing.)

The hit by Chara on Max Pacheretti (Sic) resulted in Max had a broken neck. He did recover and went on to play for a few more seasons. As to Chara he was suspended for a few games. And in my opinion should be banned from the NHL hall of fame for that hit alone.

Keep in mind, this video is of the "NHL DIRTIEST HITS", so they are illegal. Many of them resulted in serious suspensions. A few also resulted in serious beatings the next time these teams met. Matt Cooke was one of the dirties players to play in the last 40 years. Almost ended several players careers with his dirty plays. Raffi Torres was also a repeat offended whose last NHL suspension (shown on the hit on Silfverberg in this video) resulted in a 41 game suspension (half a season). He never played another NHL game after that as no one wanted him.
